Yes, Herbie's album was discussed at length and I think most people feel the way you do; it takes several listens to get into it. I didn't like it at first but I have come to see it as a masterpiece now. I mean, it has Joni's endorsement. What could be better? I particularly like the bonus tracks that were available through various retailers. I'd wondered when it was happening. For a guy so cool, you sounded a bit star struck! It's really good that people are meeting to discuss the future of music performance and the implications of new technologies. I have mentioned here that I have an awesome new Sonos system coupled with a sub to Napster. As well as accessing all of Muller's new artists (new music and artist to me, that is) at Christmas, I have been listening to artists I haven't heard from years, like Dory Previn. I listened to the whole of 'Mythical Kings and Iguanas' for the first time in probably 30 years. I couldn't help asking myself the question about new artists. How they will be developed, get the chance to hone their songwriting craft if everything is so accessible and people only download the music they've heard that they like? God knows, I disliked so much of Joni's stuff and bought it through loyalty and interest and go back now and am totally wow'd by it. If I didn't like it at the time and hadn't downloaded the whole album, I might not now get it. I think I am grappling here with something I don't quite understand, but feel some concerns for new song writers. I don't know, maybe my concerns are misplaced and all the positive things about new technology and accessibility will outweigh all the negatives - but I find it hard to imagine many of the young folk I know sitting and listening for over an hour to one artist without scrolling through to the next track or artist if there is something 'boring' about what the particular piece is they are listening to. And how will new songwriters pay their mortgages if everything is so very cheap? I really don't know, but I do feel a bit worried that there may not be some way for artists to develop their crafts over years. Hot this week, but next week you're out. However, whilst I am here and talking great songwriters,I know you will be pleased to hear that our lovely Jeff Hankins supported my mate Amy Wadge at a house gig here in Conker Cabin on Saturday night and did himself proud. It was a superb evening. Jeff now has a cd available. I haven't heard it yet, but it's live and it's Jeff, so it's bound to be good! Amy said some lovely things about Jeff's writing, and she knows a thing or two about great song writing - so a good night was had by all. Don't suppose you and Robin can come and do a house gig here some time? THAT would also be so cool! Lots of love Anita _____ I am using the Free version of SPAMfighter . And yes I was a little star struck at the Washington event. Not exactly my era of music; if Stevie Wonder, Joni, Jonatha Brooke and Andy Partridge had been there I might have been a blithering idiot... Yes, I share your concerns about the future for songwriters. Their/ our work has become so devalued in the eyes of the consumer, thanks to digital copies, Limewire, Napster, ipods filled with thousands of songs etc it is hard to see how to reclaim a time when a new release was eagerly anticipated and you saved your cash to plunk down for it so you hurry home and immerse between the speakers with your mates. Of course there are more releases than ever too, so that makes each one a little less special as it's just another release. What has not been devalued however is the power of word of mouth excitement and friends telling friends of their discoveries. Your mention of a Jeff Hankins album has me eagerly awaiting it. Great songwriting is not dead of course, and Jeff H proves the point, as I'm sure does your friend Amy Wadge. The JMDL, amongst many wonderful benefits, has allowed a group to share musical discoveries outside of Joni, so we are doing our bit to spread the word, at least to each other. Our Henning and Christina have just put out a fabulous single called "Open" which I urge everyone to download from iTunes. They are going under the moniker "Northern Sound" (to distinguish it from their Joni covers project) and if you type in "Northern Sound" to the iTunes music store, then select "Northern Sound" in the upper left area you'll find the single. I mastered it myself, and I'll tell you it sounds wonderful. Robin and I love doing house concerts and we'd totally love to play one at your house. My mum will be turning 80 next year so there's a good chance we'll be coming to the UK for that, since she lives near Oxford. maybe we can set something up for next summer. love Dave On May 11, 2009, at 6:19 AM, Anita Tedder wrote: > Hi Dave > > It was most interesting to hear about your trip. You and Robin really COULD PLAY CONKER CABIN. I forgot your Mum lived here. Gosh, that would be so great. Let me know and let's make sure we do it. I was so gutted to not be able to get to Socal Joni Fest, but to see you and Robin playing once again especially in Conker Cabin would make my days!!!! I am heartened by what you say about the power of word and mouth and also, I think, it reminds me of the power of live performances. Maybe that is the way ahead, that people who get out and gig and can really cut it live in small venues will keep music and song writing real and live. A bit, as Jeff said on Saturday, a bit like troubadours. And you, Robin, Henning, Christina, Jeff and my mate Woj surely cut it live. The phrase could be 'Keep Music Live Which Keeps Music Real.' Most of the time (other than at the beginning and end where you pack up and in and out and all about) you just sit there until someone comes up to vote for their ballot. I'm sure you've seen the bored faces of poll workers when voting. Anyway, that being said, I read and finished Will You Take Me As I Am that day. I know some of you briefly chatted about it and some asked for more comments on it. Anyway, overall, I found it to be a very interesting read. However, I am an easy person to win over when it comes to reading. The majority of what I read I enjoy (except for when I was in school and they forced some real horrors on you!). I know my taste. One thing that I really did like was the fact that I actually read some new information, or atleast new to me. There were a couple of tidbits that I didn't hear before or did not know and I've read my way up, down, in, and out through some Joni books, articles, interviews, etc etc. I also particularly enjoyed the history of confessional writing. I also came to understand why Joni really does not like the term "confessional songwriting." I can understand her aversion to the phrase though I think it has outgrown having anything to do with sins and penance or any sort of religious or moral connotation that one has nothing something wrong and is owing up to it. It is more like one is EXPOSING one's self, no limits, no holding back and so forth. I also liked the end part of what Joni likes. Overall, it was an in depth look at Joni's "Blue" period, a period which she is basically known for. But rather than only specifically at Joni's relationships it covered far more ground than that. I appreciated that. - -Monika NR: Twilight-Stephenie Meyer (I want to see what all the fuss is about!) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 May 2009 15:58:43 -0400 From: "Gary Z." I won't hold my breath for any Joni content in this episode, but you never know.... Best regards, Gary Z.
