Idol I thought I'd come in with my twopence from the UK. We get the show on Thursday evenings on ITV 2 and the results on Friday. I have always watched Idol - going back to Kelly Clarkson and Fantasia to name just two. Never really got Reuben or that strange skinny guy (what was his name? Clay or something?) but can remember feeling outraged when Jennifer Hudson got the boot. This year's group I think, like you guys are really, really great. Can you believe that 'Rock Chick' Alison can give those kind of performances at just 16? What a pair of tonsils she has - and doesn't she know in her bones where she's coming at the music from? Amazing. I have quite liked Chris' (I think that's his name, plays guitar a lot)arrangements some weeks. Really interesting takes on some songs. The guy with the hat who plays piano is such good singer and pianist - but just not so clear where he's at, but I rate him very highly. And, of course, as everyone says, Adam Lambert is a star, although he's a bit heavy on his foundation and over powdered. I simply loved how he sang 'Mad World' the other week and even the old Yvonne Elliman classic on disco week was given a twist that made it his. This guy finds and makes really interesting arrangements and sings them with great commitment, heart and passion. So he has all this heart and then is SO camp with it. I thought his take on country week, when he did 'Ring of Fire', was absolutely hilarious. Totally over the top, incredibly camp and, as La Cowell said, self indulgent beyond measure. But it was brilliant! I loved it I think because I could visualise a lot of outrage amongst purist country fans. I have to say I picked Leona Lewis to win our X Factor equivalent at her first audition. I think she's a sensational singer. I am now really looking forward to tonight and catching the ballads. Don't tell me who goes! I have been 'out' about my love of these programmes for a long time. It's good to know you are out there, too, Em,Paz,Mags and Cat. Idol FWIW, Adam and Allison both knock my sox off. I almost wish I were lots younger than I am so I could look forward to seeing how Allison develops as an artist.; I think she's going to be around for years and years. I was glad that she got lots of votes this week. And I wondered WTF the story was with Adam. I really liked his performance this week; the guy has talent, of course, but also guts. I mean, that could have been a disaster, but it was terrific. And he was in the bottom three? I want to see Adam and Allison in the finals. This year's final four are superb, but I think both Adam and Allison are on planets all their own, and I'm glad AI takes me to their alternative universes. I too am sort of delighted to find that I'm enjoying something as mainstream as AI. Weird but true. Rock week should be something. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Apr 2009 07:53:01 -0400 From: Gerald Notaro Subject: Re: NJC Am. If not and you're at all interested I can send it privately on request. Cassy The Bob Dylan Show Announces All-Star Roster for the 2009 Ballpark Tour BOB DYLAN & HIS BAND JOHN MELLENCAMP WILLIE NELSON Bob Dylan has just announced an ambitious lineup for this year's summer concert tour. Along with fellow troubadour Willie Nelson, this summer, The Bob Dylan Show will also feature John Mellencamp, marking just the second time in the past 24 years that these three performers have shared the concert stage. Since first embarking on a tour of minor league baseball parks in 2004, over a half-million fans have come together to spend a night under the stars. With free admittance for children*, these tours draw a multi-generational fan base rarely seen on the concert circuit, causing one reporter to describe it as, "more like a backyard party than a rock concert." The Boston Globe ranked the tour amongst "the most relaxed, enjoyable shows of the year. "You Can't Beat Fun At The Old Ballpark," came a headline from the Chicago Sun Times. Besides performing over 100 concerts each year for the past 15 years, Bob Dylan drops into millions of households each week with his highly popular satellite radio program Theme Time Radio Hour. In recent years, he has also received the big-screen treatment, courtesy of film director Martin Scorcese, with the critically acclaimed release of No Direction Home, the first feature-length film biography of Bob Dylan. Prior to that, he spent over 20 weeks on the New York Times best seller list with the publication of Chronicles: Volume One, the first in a series of the artist's self-penned personal histories. In between these high-water marks, Bob has earned multiple Grammy Awards, an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and a Kennedy Center Honor (the highest honor of artistic achievement given in the United States). As a recording artist, he continues to hit the long ball. After debuting at #1 with his last record, Modern Times, Bob Dylan is about to release a brand new studio album on April 28 through Columbia Records. Entitled Together Through Life, it has already received 4-star reviews from MOJO, The London Telegraph and the New York Times. Over the course of a career that has spanned more than 30 years, John Mellencamp, consummate songwriter and performer, has released 23 albums with worldwide sales of over 40 million units while amassing 22 Top 40 hit songs. In 2008, the same year he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Life Death Love and Freedom, was issued which Rolling Stone called "one of the most compelling albums of Mellencamp's career" and placed it among the top 5 albums of the year. Mellencamp's ties to Willie Nelson date back to 1985, the year they joined forces to mount the first Farm Aid benefit concert that also featured a stellar set from Bob Dylan. Mellencamp and Bob Dylan have been friendly for the past 25 years. Besides rallying his friends each year to support Farm Aid, Willie Nelson is quite possibly the most prolific recording artist in any genre of music. In the past five years alone he's released no less than a dozen records, and when he's not in the studio recording new albums, he fills time writing books, acting in feature films and generally keeping a pace unimaginable for someone half his age. It's a wonder he even finds the time to tour. In addition to the Bob Dylan Show Ballpark Tour stops announced today, it is anticipated that several more Bob Dylan Show dates, also featuring John Mellencamp and Willie Nelson, will be added to the tour in the very near future. All concert tickets are priced at $67.50 and most shows are general admission, allowing fans to grab a seat in the stands or find a place to watch from the field. Tickets will go on sale throughout the month of May (see TOUR page) and will be available at the local ballpark ticket office and affiliated ticket outlets. *Children 14 and under get in free with each adult ticket holder. Jerry, yo mama rocks! I think that, hands down, he is the most original one to come along in a long, long time. There are times I find myself asking, "what the heck is THAT?" (especially with his version of "Ring of Fire," and yet, by the time he's finished, I'm thinking, "Bravo, you!" I agree that he wears too much foundation and face powder. I guess he's trying to hide his somewhat pocky skin or maybe it's just part of his androgynous look. I think the emo haircut is way out of style, but wouldn't want to see him looking too "normal" either, and he does change his look according to the song. He doesn't just sing. He entertains. He's the whole package. Having said that, I suspect he will not win the competition but it doesn't matter. Any of them who makes it to the top ten has had the exposure they need and he's going to be around when others may be forgotten and it's probably better for him that he doesn't come out in the top spot. - --- On Thu, 4/30/09, Gerald Notaro wrote: My mother, a HUGE American Idol, threatens to boycott the show if Adam doesn't win. I was privileged to hear it prior to release as Henning sent it to me for mastering, and I remarked to him immediately how powerfully the song resonated with the spirit of the new Obama administration, with its message of "openness to change" and "time for better times". Although he wrote the song without specific reference to Obama in mind it was striking to me how perfectly he captured the giant sense of relief the world felt this January when someone so urbane and humanistically qualified for the presidency finally took office. The beautiful Christina sang the lead and nailed the vocal with her perfect intonation and expressive delivery. They have put together a Youtube video of the song here http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=IImMMlRokeY and the song is available as a download in much higher audio resolution for 99c from the iTunes music store by typing in "Northern Sound". Please support them and this wonderful song with it's powerful message for the new epoch by downloading it. I have contacted MoveOn.org with the proposal that they use this song to reach out to their members and maintain the sense of hope for the future and transparency in government our president has finally brought. If MoveOn accept the proposal the song will be heard around the world by millions; JMDL members are getting first dibs! here are the lyrics: OPEN Morning, with you on my mind, Walking into the sunshine, Its time for better times. Morning, yesterdays gone, Im ready to start all over, Theres daybreak in my heart. The hope is new, Like morning dew, I even believe in love. OPEN TO CHANGES TO START ALL OVER OPEN TO CHANGES OPEN. Watching the clouds in the sky, Drifting like thoughts above me, My mind is a silent lake. Watching a swan passing by, Sailing upon the mirror, In the middle of the healing heat. The singing trees, My mind at ease, Makes me believe again OPEN TO CHANGES TO START ALL OVER OPEN TO CHANGES OPEN. Idol It's such a positive thing that the AI finalists did such a stellar job with the "standards." I can see a whole new life for some of those songs. As for Adam -- love him. My spouse Mary and I are of the opinion that he could easily play the part of a young Elvis Presley ... in fact, I think Adam could remake all of the old Elvis movies and do quite well with that! (I've really never cared for Elvis movies, but I would watch them if Adam played Elvis' parts.) Allison Iraheta is just amazing. Such a distinctive voice! I understand what you mean. Sometimes I'd prefer for some things to remain a mystery and some info is just too much info. I did hear Michelle's interview on CBC's Q and I found her to be intelligent and wellspoken and non-gossipy. In fact,Michelle was at the last NE Jonifest that I was at, but I never really got the chance to speak to her. I don't remember if she was there for the whole thing or not. It's all a blur now. I don't think I'd like my life dissected like that either. Once I'm dead, fair game. the thing is, whatever might have been going on in Joan's life at the time, once it's past, it's history and we all have our own way of remembering events and what we were feeling at the time, and what we remember feeling might not necessarily be what we actually felt at the time. If that makes any sense. As I said in the previous paragraph, it's all a blur once the time has gone by. - --- On Thu, 4/30/09, gerard mclaughlin wrote: I just went to the bookshop and read sections of the book.
