The name of it, when he purchased it, was The Mayan, which he kept. I liked Dawntreader which comes from a Children's fairy tale about a boat that sails off the edge of the earth - assuming that it's flat - and goes on some beautiful trip. That was my suggestion and the music of 'The Dawntreader' curves and undulates like a boat on water." FYI: According to this book Crosby paid $22,000. for it in 1967. Agreed. Particularly liked the word "bollockry." It's interesting how we all think boys don't like Joni until someone comes out and makes a statement that they don't and then a bunch of boys pipe up and say, "Yes, we do." However, I see the writer's point. I think that many of the rock/music writers do have an overly macho vision of what "good" music is and write from that perspective and dismiss an entire sex, leaving our Joan out. - --- On Mon, 4/27/09, gerard mclaughlin wrote: From: gerard mclaughlin Subject: Re: Why don't boys like Joni? But then again, I tried taking a Women's Studies class in college, at least until one woman objected to the presence of a man in the class. I even campaigned for the Equal Rights Amendment. This failed after people claimed that passing the amendment would lead to unisex bathrooms. On the way down to the state capitol, our bus stopped at a truck stop and everyone got out to make a pit stop. Next thing I know, the ladies took over the men's room (with men still in it) as theirs was overcrowded. So that was the only unisex bathroom I ever saw. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Apr 2009 18:08:42 +0100 From: "John McGloin" Subject: FW: Why don't boys like Joni? Johnny Mitchell? He did bare himself in his music and his cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" moves me so much I can't put the feelings it evokes in me into words, I just cry when I listen. John Mellencamp does that for me too sometimes even though he's not delved into as many musical forms as Joni. So many parallels in their childhoods. And both can cut to the bone with their songs and both have a nearly oddball, but fascinating, way of singing. (AND playing guitar) Both almost totally original in the way they approached crafting songs. At least up through the first handful of albums. Both had good-sized backlogs of EXCELLENT songs already written before they even got record deals. I see them as a pair of bookends. And if Neil were a blond fellow or Joni a dark haired woman they could even be said to match that way, too.
