I am dazed and happy and too tired to say much right now except WOW but a quick synopsis... Sharon Robinson, Leonard's long-time collaborator, absolutely nailed it when she sang "Back To Boogie Street," What a great song. Javier Mas, a Spanish musician, played a variety of stringed instruments: bandurria, laud, archilaud and 12-string guitar. He was amazing. Neil Larsen, keyboardist, played a mean Hammond Organ, an instrument which seemed to be kind of a throwback but a sound all of it's own that added so much to the overall feel of the show. Roscoe Beck and Rafael Gayol, on Bass and Drums respectively, made a terrific rhythm section; Beck is also the musical director of the show. Bob Metzger played guitar and pedal steel guitar. His vintage jumbo body Gibson had such a rich sound and he played it with precision and soul. Dino Soldo added so much to the show. Dino was formerly a member of the sax section of Tower of Power and he played a variety of instruments with skill. The Webb Sisters, Hattie and Charley sang back up with a few highlighted duets with Leonard then did a spot, the two of them with Neil Larsen. What harmonies. The entire show was so worth the money I paid for tickets. A full three hours of performance, three encores; I couldn't clap any more at the end, I wore myself out. I may get a bit of time to give a more detailed report later but for now, I can't stop grinning and I need to go to bed. Matt, Although I dpon't have a download link for you I believe the photo you are referring to is the one in the Sheila Walters book "Girls like us". It is as you describe, in the studio during the "Hissing" sessions probably. She's singing into a Shure SM7A, (which is of interest to at least me!) Dave MattJones wrote: Hi All, I am in the midst of a project on Joni for one of my grad seminars here at UVA, and I am trying in vain to find a specific picture of Joni. I am nearly certain I recall having seen a picture of her in the studio during the Mingus sessions. It's B&W, and she's standing behind the mic, singing, arms slightly outstretched, and wearing a blouse (or dress?) reminiscent of something Billie Holiday or another 40s/50s jazz singer might have worn. I've done a google search for Joni images and didn't see (or else just overlooked) the picture. I am in the library at the moment, and don't have access to my books, etc at home, and it may be in one of the biographies??? However, if anyone knows offhand a quick link to this image, I'd appreciate it. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Apr 2009 20:14:23 -0700 From: "Randy Remote" Subject: Re: Joni Image Question - now also Joni concerts info > I also want to mention this site to others because > it contains various downloadable concerts by Joni.
