The voice of an angel. It's very refreshing to see this and I'm happy to know that you don't need to be under 30 to compete in this show in the UK. Susan Boyle... you go, girl! And speaking of songs to die for... the list of popular songs for funerals has been released for this year. This stuff cracks me up. In fact, it kills me, so maybe I should choose a funeral song! I love the popular choices. Some of them are incredibly cheesy, but you've gotta love "Highway to Hell." And "Another one bites the dust!" Link to article: http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/afp/090416/oddities/entertainment_britain_funerals_music_offbeat Text of article: Hallelujah or Highway to Hell? Songs to die for Thu Apr 16, 10:35 AM LONDON (AFP) - Frank Sinatra's "My Way" is the most popular song played at funeral services, but other more arresting death-bed choices were revealed in a poll published in Britain Thursday. Australian rockers AC/DC's "Highway to Hell" has stormed into the funeral charts along with Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust," while Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" has a new lease of life after its recent success on a talent show. More traditionally, hymns including "The Lord Is My Shepherd" and "All Things Bright And Beautiful" are among music chosen by people to accompany their final journey. For classical music fans, Schubert's "Ave Maria," Puccini's "Nessun Dorma" and Bach's "Air On A G String" are among the most chosen pieces to comfort their loved ones as they pay final farewells. Television and radio music also features on the burial playlist: theme tunes from popular programmes like "Top Gear", "The Benny Hill Show" and even the Radio Four Shipping Forecast music, which many fall asleep to at night. "As more people choose non-religious funerals, so they incline towards contemporary songs with which they closely identify," said Lorinda Sheasby of the funeral company which commissioned the survey. While hymns and classics may have been traditional favourites, pop songs now account for more than half of the music chosen as people's final soundtrack, according to the poll of over 30,000 funerals. Here are some of the top pieces of music chosen, according to the poll commissioned by Co-operative Funeralcare. - - Top 5 popular songs: 1. "My Way" - Frank Sinatra/Shirley Bassey. 2. "Wind Beneath My Wings" - Bette Midler/Celine Dion. 3. "Time To Say Goodbye" - Sarah Brightman/Andrea Bocelli. 4. "Angels" - Robbie Williams. 5. "Over The Rainbow" - Eva Cassidy. - - Top 5 hymns: 1. "The Lord Is My Shepherd". 2. "Abide With Me". 3. "All Things Bright And Beautiful". 4. "Old Rugged Cross". 5. "Amazing Grace". - - Top 5 classical pieces: 1. "Nimrod" from "Enigma Variations" - Elgar. 2. "Pie Jesu" from "Requiem" - Faure. 3. "Ave Maria" - Schubert. 4. "Nessun Dorma" - Puccini. 5. "Canon in D Major" - Pachelbel. - - Other chart movers (no rankings): - - "Hallelujah" covered by talent show winner Alexandra Burke. - - "Bat Out Of Hell" - Meatloaf. - - "Spirit In The Sky" - Doctor and the Medics. - - 'Highway To Hell" - AC/DC. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Apr 2009 15:34:26 -0400 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: Re: NJC Susan Boyle and.... Have we become so overconditioned to the AI standard of physical appearance that we find it hard to accept someone who sings so well but looks like Susan Boyle? It's an interesting question - I liked a lot of the comments to the article. Yes, people do make assumptions based on how a person looks and I like the fact that these assumptions were blown out of the water. Studies have been done that show that people who are good-looking tend to get further ahead in life, likely because we make so many assumptions about people based on their looks. This is a topic that could go on for days and consume many megabytes of computer memory or reams of paper. I think it's awful that people were laughing at her and I'm glad she gets the last laugh. I wonder where she has been all this time? I'm sure she's a trained singer, because I don't think an amateur would have the type of breath control and poise she has. Despite all, she does have an amazing voice anyway and I don't think people are overreacting, but, let's face it, the looks do play some part. In my mind, I'm almost ashamed to admit, I'm giving her a makeover and I don't think it would take all that much. She already has the voice and the poise and a good sense of humour from what you can see. __________________________________________________________________ Looking for the perfect gift? Also very emotional, also a story of someone who blew expectations out od the water, a Hollywood ending in real life. And I think all of see a bit of ourselves in these people and it's why these stories touch us so deeply. Songs to die for My thoughts on seeing the Susan Boyle thing were "wow, she can sure sing" - how lovely! but why are people acting like FREAKS about it??? THEY, Simon Cowl (sp) and his lot are the FREAKS! Boyle is a good and a natural woman. Its as if people are amazed she would dare walk AROUND or exist without complying more with the cooky-cutter rules about how a. women are supposed to look nowadays b. female performers MUST look in order to be a part of anything even halfway worthwhile. I'd HAPPILY watch her and hear her, as-is. She just looks (to me) like a woman from maybe 150 years ago, perhaps - and I'd say that aspect = unsullied by the shallow crap of "now". She's a natural woman, not a plucked freak-show chicken. Nothing in the world wrong with the way that woman looks. Its just out of the past - big time. I can imagine country women from many years ago looked just like that. I'll be curious what happens with her. If they try to "Cinderella" her like they did with Allison Krause just before she really hit big-time. In fact my thought on 1st seeing her was that she appeared like one of those old school opera singers - like you'd expect to see with horns on her head. And indeed, the song she performed was not pop. So wassup with these people? I think it exposed the lack of depth of what they do. I think they indicted themselves. growwllllllll.... Bob, I didn't look at the video you linked to...am having trouble with viewing video. LOL! it took me like 5 mins to get through the shortest video of Miss Boyle on YouTube, the 2 min 37 second one. It always impresses me that people over the world can be arsed to pick up on shows in the UK - Britain's Got Talent is now in its third year and Susan Boyle is what I like about it. The first series gave us Paul Potts - a mobile telephone sales man from Wales who, like Susan, came on stage and on the outside gave no idea at all that he had any talent at all. Like Susan he had a dream to be a professional singer and the cynicism on Simon Cowell's face said what the nation probably were thinking. the opening notes of Nessun Dorma came on and this incredible voice - unblieveable tenor emerged from this very unassuming man.
