Some other noteworthy films I've seen recently: Timecrimes - a fascinating suspense/time travel film, very cool concept. Tell No One - another thriller, great acting and keeps you wondering what's going on. Slumdog Millionaire - Y'all know about this one, but I too thought it was brilliant and masterfully edited. Implausible yes, but so was the Wizard of Oz - so what? Synecdoche, New York - A difficult film to understand, so watch it and then read about it. Charlie Kaufman always presents something unlike anything you've ever seen. An incredibly talented cast. Rachel Getting Married - Certainly not the feel-good film of 2008 but a sometimes uncomfortably realistic portrayal of dysfunctional family life. Happy-Go-Lucky - Mike Leigh, that's all that needs to be said. A club owner invited us to his place after our show and Gene's band was playing there. Really nice cat and a superb bass player. It is quite popular and well known but for some reason I just could not get into it at all. It was not a good summer reading experience as it was a required summer read. However, one good thing did come out of it. In either 9th or 10th grade honors English, we had a really fun project concerning the book. We had to choose a character to be for a speech. We had to choose someone and act as this person in front of the class telling their story down the line. I don't remember if we had to pretend if it was 5 or 10 years ahead in time but we were able to be very creative with this. I was Valentine. Very fun. - -Monika - --- On Tue, 4/14/09, Victor Johnson wrote: One of the best books I ever read. I love all the intrigue and the mystery. It doesn't appear to be any of the names suggested, however, and I have a feeling he may have only played live with Joni, not on record. Further information: he now trades under the name Seasick Steve as a performer and recording artist, and even though he says his real name is Steve Gene Wold, I'm fairly sure his surname was not Wold back in the 60s and 70s, and that Wold is actually his wife's surname. Stories suggest he played with everyone from Joni to Lightning Hopkins and other musicians, but I interviewed him yesterday and he's very reticent to talk about the past (and even his age). He used to live in the Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco in 1966/67, and lived for a time in the house where Janis Joplin's band lived (and knew Janis). Bizarrely, in the 90s, he set up a recording studio in Olympia, Washington, and recorded many grunge/alternative bands (notably Modest Mouse). As Seasick Steve he is big in the UK and also quite popular here in Australia, but from what I can tell virtually unknown in the US, where he's from. Not sure if that helps anyone out there to dredge up any possible Joni associations, but there you go.
