Its a true story. There was a time a few years ago when there was a spate of movies directed or produced by brothers and in one article I read (in a Spanish newspaper) it gave three examples of this phenomenon, namely the Farrelly brothers, the Wachowski brothers and the Weinstein brothers. Unfortunately it also mentioned another pair of brothers who were having a hot streak at that time, yes, ladies and gentlemen, your very own Bill y Bob Thornton. I've interviewed Tom Petty.?? And YOU > sir, are NO Tom Petty!" > I think Ghomeshi is too polite to go in that direction, but many people have been quick to point out that BBT is no Tom Petty. How many unknown musicians (who happen to be Oscar-winning actors) would land a 15-minute interview that is aired nationally? Probably none (unless they also happen to be Oscar-winning actors.) As has been pointed out, Ghomeshi mentioned the Oscar-winning actor part only in his intro. It was BBT who made that mention into a major issue, by suggesting that some sort of censorship had been agreed to before they went on air. You don't go to another country and then make completely stupid but nevertheless disparaging comments about your host country and expect people not to be offended. And he still doesn't get it, because he talked about it onstage later, referring to Ghomeshi as "that a..hole" and then still didn't get it when people booed him. As to the mashed potatoes without gravy comment, WTF is that even supposed to mean? (For what it's worth, I like butter on my mashed potatoes, not gravy. It wouldn't occur to me to put gravy on them, but I'm not a fan of gravy in any case.) And he may well have been on drugs. I can't imagine anyone perceiving a slight where there obviously was none, but then again, maybe he is just an arrogant SOB looking for a fight. People are comparing this interview to the one where Joaquin Phoenix was on Letterman, but I don't see much similarity. I actually felt sorry for Phoenix and it looked obvious to me that he was either very stoned on something or else is mentally ill. As well, Letterman was making fun of him. In Thornton's case, he could have been coked-out, but it wasn't that obvious if so and he just came across as a jerk. Ghomeshi was trying very hard to bring him back to the topic but remained polite throughout and even since, hasn't said anything nasty about the man and has only said it was one of the most difficult interviews he has ever had to do. __________________________________________________________________ Looking for the perfect gift? He was brilliant already with "Swing Blade" and other movies! Enough! Really I feel this whole thing has been given way too much attention. He's gotten way more publicity off of this than anything. I didn't even really KNOW he hasd a band, prior to this! So this was fantastic publicity...now I know he has a band. groannnnnnnn.... Such is the nature of the voice of a 13-year-old girl. Pretty remarkable actually for a young girl to pick THESE two songs given the range one needs to pull them off. Probably were a couple of her Dad's favorites. I'm with you, Em. I only watched the first 3 minutes, but I thought it was plainly obvious that he was being deliberately "difficult". From the looks (and subtle smiles) the band were giving each other, I'd say they were all in on the joke. And if you watch the introduction, you can see all the band member cringe a little when the interviewer makes such a big deal of BBT's movie career. Maybe he (and the band) get a little tired of that being the focus all the time when they are trying to be heard as musicians? It almost seemed to me like they had agreed beforehand to act this way - depending on whether the "movie career" was mentioned or not - and how big an emphasis it was given. Oh and Joachim Phoenix on Letterman? Acting - pure and simple. He's making a docu/mockumentary with Casey Affleck (he was apparently filming from the wings), and this would just have been more footage to add to the pile. Personally I like this approach to interviews - why not have some fun?!
