I still remember playing clubs with Jonatha (and Jennifer - then The Story) and hanging out after. We were all unknowns at the time - and, of course, I still am, which is ok. And David Wilcox was around a bunch back then - along with Peirce Pettis (nicest guy!) and assorted others... Ah, nostalgia... Oh, and we did drop your name to Jonatha - she said to tell you hello. And speaking of name-dropping, David Wilcox was sitting right next to us at the show - I felt like Kakki in LA surrounded by celebs! Ha. I was hoping she'd call him up and they'd do some spontaneous duet, but it didn't happen. Wish you could have been there, we had a large time. I felt I had to have the magic trilogy of Eli, NYT and Xmas & the Beads of Sweat. Anyway, I saw her perform once, in what was her first appearance in the UK for god knows how long - and it was less than a year before her death. When she sang To A Child, there was nary a dry eye in the house, and this was BEFORE I became a parent! Laura Nyro was touched with genius, no question. When you wrote: "but no one does it by just pretending that fear doesn't exist. you can't walk around it or wish it away. but, tend to your spirit a while, and fears aren't quite so large, and they have less power," this resonated for me, because I believe it is true for me. Thank you to everyone who has written such lovely things to me both on and off list about my post. It feels another bunch of good healing for my spirit! I have verse 331 from the Dhammapada at the top of my computer screen. It says: "Happiness arises from the timely company of friends. Happiness arises from having few needs. Happiness arises from accumulated virtue at life's end. Happiness arises from seeing beyond suffering." I try to hold this in my mind, because it seems to make some sense, though I am a bit uncertain about virtue or achieving the accumulation of it! Still, I try to do my best. Certainly the bit about the 'timely company of friends' is coming at me down the air waves! The entertainment world's center cannot hold the enormity of so many over-blown egos and I can hear burst after burst after burst over and over and again and again... It's sad and irritating. Well, at least Billy Bob's not wearing all the eyeshadow, mascara, eyeliner and foundation Brett Michaels does on his VH-1 "ROCK-STAR" celebrity show. Hadn't seen Phyliss since Pazfest but of course as it is with JMDLer's it was just like yesterday when we were together. They live in this amazing mountain home, full of art, Joni and other miscellaneous beauty. Next time I'm bringing my swimsuit and we can check out the hot tub! Anyway, on to the show - we got there early, and listened to Jonatha's sound check while we were eating dinner. Phyliss had prepared a gift basket for her, knowing her love of chocolate and such, and presented it to her. Jonatha came out and hung out with us a bit, we got some pics and conversation, what a sincerely sweet & kind person. We all sat right up front for the show - it was not a large crowd but it was a very appreciative and responsive crowd, and Jonatha seemed touched by the response she got as she played 6-7 songs from her new (excellent) album "The Works". She played many others from her catalogue of course, playing guitar & piano and every song had a story and/or other comments that went along with it. One of my favorite moments was "Deny" a song she wrote from a film that was not used. A beautiful and moving song that brought a bit of water to the eyes. Thanks again to Phyliss and Bob for their hospitality - I promise it won't take 9 years for us to hang out again. He couldn't even formulate his thoughts at the beginning. And look at the faces of the band members. They are completely pissed at him that he's ruined this opportunity for them by being a jerk. Where's the youtube video of them after the interview out in the parking lot. Now *that's* a video! And I think the interviewer was egging him on b/c he was being so "out there."
