I have no idea whether there's any relationship between books and pounds.<< Here in Catalonia it is pretty much the same as in French. 'Llibre' means book (libro in Spanish) but the interesting thing IMHO is that 'un full' means one leaf of a book, as in page, and is marked as masculine, grammatically. A leaf on a tree is 'una fulla' and requires 'feminine' articles and possessive adjectives. 'Lliura' is both a pound sterling and a pound in weight. Change the last letter and you have lliure, which is the same as 'libre' in Spanish, meaning 'free'. Free as in free speech, not as in free beer, which would be 'cervesa gratis'. Lessig's book 'Free Culture' is here called 'Cultura lliure'. pip pip. mike in bcn - NP Metheny Trio ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Apr 2009 03:50:51 -0500 From: T Peckham Subject: Re: njc 'Foliage' (some Lieve content) Ooof, this makes my head hurt. :-D Terra, who used to call songbooks folios, but now has to "check the folios"--make sure the page numbers in galleys are in the proper order and none are missing and stuff like that--before commencing proofreading. After the very learned explanation as to the meaning of a "folio", you wrote: "No surprise that the French word for book is 'lieve', and that sometimes, we have to 'turn over a new leaf'. I'll leave it to Ms. Reckers to take up the story from here." Well, I was at first dumbfounded! So was my name "Book" after all? Then I realised, as Catherine also wrote, that the French for book is "livre", and who knows, maybe in there is the same root as "leaf" i.e. folio or feuille. But I'd have to look that up and find more evidence, because "leaf" is a Germanic word and "feuille" is Romanic, so not sure if there was a "jump" from one language group to the other... Catherine is also right that my name is Flemish (i.e. Dutch), and that it means "dear" or "beloved", like the German adjective "liebe". I'm always a bit reluctant to say that, because it could be seen that I am looking for a compliment, but I guess that's silly, it's just the name my parents gave me and a rose would smell just the same if it wasn't called a rose etc. So I will unashamedly admit that I like my name very much. It was very popular when I was a child, now it is very dated, which means, I guess, it is about ready for a revival. What I childishly enjoy, is when I get a letter written in Dutch, and it addresses me as "Lieve Lieve", i.e "Dear Lieve". A bit like, say, if Cher were a man and got addressed in French (note I am avoiding a cheap joke here!) then it could say: "Cher Cher". Phew, I hope you all got that!
