And this one I do have to say is one of the best ever, lots of solid tracks and lots of deep tracks too. Thanks to Pamela, Joey, Paul, and Jerry for their help in assembling this one. You can download all of the tracks here, and I've also included some artwork in case you actually burn them all to a disc and want an insert. http://tinyurl.com/d6zmqc Here's the tracklist: 1. Jordan Trotter - Car On A Hill: We get #111 off to a solid start with an updated modern country-pop treatment of a Joni tune that's only been attempted once or twice. A nice arrangement, solid singing and great performances by everyone involved. 2. Pamela Luccarelli - Love Is Like A Big Brass Band: I had released this one earlier but it belongs to this collection. In case you haven't heard it, it's a lovely version of a song that we haven't heard Joni sing yet. One of her early unreleased songs getting some deserved exposure. And I have an inside scoop about Pamela's upcoming cover of another Joni rarity, so stay tuned for that one. 3. Leigh Carriage - Crazy Cries Of Love: Always refreshing to see that some artists realize that Joni was relevant in the 90's. Leigh Carriage, one of Australia's finest jazz singers, certainly knows it and gives TCCOL a nice jazz spin, accompanied by some nice keyboard work. 4. Lucinda Drayton - Both Sides Now: Lucinda turns in a very pretty version of the franchise, sounds a bit like Shawn Colvin imo. Some lovely guitar work to accompany the fine vocal. 5. Maureen McGovern - The Circle Game 6. Maureen McGovern - The Fiddle And The Drum: This was a fairly high-profile pair of Joni covers from last year (she also sang the first line from "All I Want" as an intro to Simon & Garfunkel's "America); Maureen is best-known for her hit single "The Morning After" and she's had a long career spanning about 35 years. Her voice has a nice warm quality to it, it's almost TOO perfect and sterile for my tastes - still, these are very well done. Both are from her 2008 release "The Long And Winding Road". 7. Delerium Blues Project - Be Cool: The Delerium Blues Project is the brainchild of musician and longtime Joni fan Kenny Werner and vocalist Roseanna Vitro. They bring a nice mellow jazz Steely Dannish groove to Be Cool from their 2008 release, and the track features a stinging horn section too. 8. Liz Bligan - Big Yellow Taxi: A lot of country flavor to this one - pedal steel and such, and even a guitar solo thrown in for good measure. 9. Melody Diachun - Free Man In Paris: LOVE this one - I put it on the "Sweet 16" disc I gave away at Lucyfest. Born in Montreal and now making her home in Vancouver Canada, Melody is another fine Canadian jazz performer to take on Joni. And this one is a nice stretch, running just under 7 minutes and featuring some nice soloing from her band. 10. Sharon Veer - Both Sides Now: Joni's friend Sharon Bell (of "Song For Sharon" fame) recorded this album 30 years ago and paid homage to her childhood friend by including BSN. 11. Nina Vidal - River: Nina's middle name is Simone, and that's significant as you can tell by listening. Nina Simone was a big influence as were many other jazz and soul artists. Her 2007 take on "River" is lovely and well-paced and showcases her voice as well as her piano talents. 12. Kristofer Benn - The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines: German jazz singer turns in a fine scatting jumping take on this one from 2005, some nice electric piano soloing as well. 13. The Favourites - You Turn Me On I'm A Radio: From 2008, a soft, gentle flowing version of Joni's intentionally pop song. The singer navigates the trickier parts of the melody with ease and even adds some of her own embellishments. 14. Suzanne Fiore - Jericho: Another Bostonian; Suzanne Fiore boldly picked the seldom-done Jericho in a live setting and released it on her live album last year. She gives it a fine reading, using her cabaret skills to highlight the dramatic nature of the song. 15. Rie Fu - Both Sides Now: Pretty, a straightforward read on the franchise from 2008. 16. Sunday Folk - Big Yellow Taxi: One of the older tracks on the disc, this one goes back almost 30 years to 1981. This is pretty cheesy stuff, sounds like an Up With People/Partridge Family sort of thing. 17. Karan Casey - The Fiddle And The Drum: This one is different - in lieu of doing this one acapella, as is commonly the case, Karan does TFATD as a voice/bagpipe duet, which is awfully effective as it connotes a military sound. Karan is an Irish traditional folksinger - she certainly sounds authentic here. 18. Billy Cox - The Circle Game: This one sounds like it's circa 1970 or so but it's actually a new track, just coming out last year. Billy takes a fast-paced, jangly Herman's Hermits approach to his treatment. Sounds European but I couldn't find out much information about him. 19. Syncopation - Both Sides Now: Boston-area vocal group Syncopation first recorded BSN in 2003 and that one wound up on Volume 46. In 2008 they took another stab at it and here it is. Nice job, but if y'all are reading this, there's a lot more to Joni than BSN - ok? And with that we come to the end of another in the never-ending series of Joni Covers - hope you find plenty to like here. Otherwise we see 'greatest hits' songbooks, anthologies and compendiums (a) Usually 'songbook' doesn't begin to cover the scope of a Joni folio, what with the supplemental art and photos... where woould we be without the extra pool photos in HOSL? 'Folio' is actually a word out of the book printing biz and is derived from the Latin word for 'leaf', hence our word 'foliage'. A folio is a large sheet of printer's paper folded over once, creating 4 leaves, or pages, printed on both sides. A stack of these bound into a book is a 'folio', It has also evolved to point to the traditional dimensions of such a book, around 12"x15". (Shakespear's Folios are pretty large books, think coffee-table size.) Old sheet music was significantly larger than today's 8 1/2" x 10". Early on it was approximately 12"x15" hence: 'song folio' and it was often the case that a popular tune fit on two or three leaves, plus a cover. If a song only ran two pages of staves, then the back of the folio was often used to give one-line 'samples' of the Publishers other songwriters(the beginning of MP3 previewing!) Other publishing terms relating to a book's size are 'quarto' (folded twice, making 8 leaves, about 9"x12") and octavo (folded 3 times, making 16 leaves, about 6"x9". All this folding explains why somtimes you run into a book whose leaves haven't been separated, or edge-cut. No surprise that the French word for book is 'lieve', and that sometimes, we have to 'turn over a new leaf'. I'll leave it to Ms. Reckers to take up the story from here. I don't think your kid will be a Stewie. You are going to have a great time as a parent and your kid is going to love having you as a Dad. I usually get sucked in by every April Fool joke there is, by the way, and almost had a heart attack when i went to jonimitchell.com and read the "news." Who can I sue? ;-) - --- On Wed, 4/1/09, Victor Johnson wrote: > Yes, exciting news at JM! I > am glad I made the announcement before and not on April 1 by > the way.
