I know a lot of you have been very concerned about what's going on in Australia so, I thought I'd give you an update and do the right thing by putting the NJC tag on this one. The bushfire crisis is not over yet. The death toll stands at 208 so far. A firefighter from Canberra was trying to connect a hose on the truck when a burning tree fell on him and killed him. He had said that he wanted to help those in Victoria to return the favour of the Victorian firefighters when they came to the rescue of Canberra in 2003. Tonight, a memorial service was held for a family who lost all but one member of the family. The young man who lost his sister, mother and father stood strong and thanked those who had helped him through the trauma. I had never even heard of any of these towns until this crisis happened. These gorgeous little hamlets in the beautiful mountains of Victoria are now largely wiped from the face of the earth. Flowerdale, Marysville, King Lake. All gone. They will be rebuilt however. Local residents have already begun to build new towns in their place. Some unscrupulous people have been trying to buy land cheap from some of the victims. Cashing in on their misery. The crisis is not over yet though. There are new fires north of the towns of Healesville and Warburton which are quite close to Melbourne and dry northerly winds are predicted for Monday. This Sunday has been declared a national day of mourning and a huge memorial service will be broadcast nationally from the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne. Unfortunately, another natural disaster is occurring at the same time. There are severe floods in three other states. Far northern Queensland has been dealing with floods from a tropical cyclone since before the fires but now northern New South Wales (my state) has been declared a natural disaster zone and many towns have been isolated. Western Australia is also suffering floods in the northern Pilbarra region. I always knew this was a continent of contrasts but this is extreme. Now, tell me there is no such thing as climate change. These are all small to medium sized towns and some are small cities like, Bourke in the northwest which has been cut off by the flood waters. No major cities are effected but it sure is soggy in Sydney, I can tell you. More rain is due tomorrow. These natural disasters are so wide spread. Four states are now dealing with one disaster or another and we only have six states. Maybe the memorial service will be shown in other countries. Watch for it. I hope I haven't depressed you all with this. There is a lot of positive news coming out of this too. There is a strong sense of community radiating through this country. We will not be beaten. You've always been a resilient lot. Thank god. And thank you, Mark, for the update. I hope relief comes to Australia soon. Stay safe. I hope things work out but Calgary supports the arts so it is very important for this ballet to be successful and for the critics to give high regards. Did love put it on a new Facebook page? (Glad it made the cut for your 3 CD "other Joan" compilation, David Eoll!) I can feel your joy, Rian. I remember hearing it for the first time and going through the roof! JONI! Listen to that THAT VOICE! Of course, that was probably before you were born. It was 1975. I remember racing to the record store to get it. (How did we hear about new albums back then? No internet. Rolling Stone and word of mouth, I guess. Or you turn me on I'm a radio. Or strolling through the record stores.) Anyway, I raced back to my college apt, pulled into the driveway with the brakes on my $100 1961 "Little Green" VW bug complaining (I had to put brake fluid in it every other day....who had money for repairs?), and bee-lined for the stereo. (Dual turntable on Bob's red art table, Marantz 323 receiver?) Off with the Dead or ABB or The Band or Leo Kottke or David Bromberg or whatever else my roommates were playing. "Ya gotta hear this guys! It's JONI on a Joan Baez album!" They shook their heads and didn't stand in my way. I played it over and over, exultant and joyous over "that voice." When friends and kin and campers in our kitchen were there on weekends, they'd get to hear it, too. Ha. Like it or not! I probably wore those grooves out and scratched it pretty badly putting it on all the time. I think I first heard Joan Baez while babysitting for this cool hippie couple down the road. Eighth grade or so. Having just moved back to "you're so square" CT from California and the Summer of Love, I did a lot of babysitting so I could earn money to get back to CA. (50 cents an hour, and 75 after midnight, did not add up too fast.) Most of the families were Harry's House suburban WASPY families, but not this one. They had Joan and Peter Paul & Mary and it was a pleasure to sit there. Even though they were cool, they had a rule that I couldn't have friends over, so when Alexandra (?) was asleep, I just played their albums. I'd love to hear Dida again. After browsing via facebook, I found a small number (but loyal) Joni fans in South East Asia. But a Joni-cover show is something that's RARE here. I've been wanting to post this all week, but figured someone else already had. Now, finally getting to peruse this week's digests, I see it has not been posted. It's a beautiful video (Garret, you were just talking about Regina Spektor!), and a petition you can sign. There's a wide world of noble causes, and this is one of them. It's already a third of a million strong! Dear MoveOn member, Opponents of gay marriage in California weren't content with passing Proposition 8 and taking away the right of loving couples to marry. Led by Ken Starryup, that Ken Starrthey're now urging the state Supreme Court to both validate Prop 8 and forcibly divorce 18,000 gay and lesbian couples who were married before the ballot measure passed. The Court's ruling will determine whether right-wingers can legally use ballot initiatives to strip vulnerable minorities of their constitutional rights. Progressives are responding with one of the most incredible actions we've ever seen. The Courage Campaigna MoveOn-style progressive group that works on California issuesasked married couples, their friends and their families to mail in pictures with a simple message for Starr and his right-wing allies: "Don't divorce..." With the help of musician Regina Spektor, they've turned the photos into a music video that will break your heart. Click below to see this beautiful video and sign their letter to the California Supreme Court asking it to strike down Prop 8, reject Ken Starr's case, and let all loving, committed couples marry. http://www.moveon.org/r?r=51179&id=15579-1802800-H5knQux&t=2 Then, if it moves you, please send the video to friends and family and ask them to sign the letter as well. The fight for equal rights in California won't be easyand the Courage Campaign will need all of our voices to help make it happen. **** Love, Patti P., thinking of Ed & Jimmy, Lori & Mary, Mark & Travis, and you know there are more.... _________________________________________________________________ Windows Live: Discover 10 secrets about the new Windows Live. http://windowslive.com/connect/post/jamiethomson.spaces.live.com-Blog-cns!550 F681DAD532637!7540.entry?ocid=TXT_TAGLM_WL_t2_ugc_post_022009 ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Feb 2009 05:44:45 +0000 From: Patti Parlette Subject: Dida!
