As far as Joan and Joni ... well interesting that both of their names are "Joan" to begin with ... and IIRC Dida was recorded and released in 1974 on Joan's Gracias A La Vida album. So first off, that's over 30 years ago, a lot of time for differences of opinion to develop. I believe that a couple of factors are at play. First of all, Joan Baez was romantically involved with Bob Dylan, who she introduced apparently while still a relative unknown at her concerts. We all know that Joni admires Bob and vice versa. They are the "poet" singer-songwriters that first come to mind for many people. (Yes and Leonard Cohen, etc.. as well). So that very possibly placed some kind of strain eventually on the relationship between Joni and Joan. Also both Joni and Joan are very outspoken women, with Joan being more prone to activisim whereas Joni is inherently more introspective - practically a philosopher as she is always asking "WHY"? - and reactive I suppose you could say. Anyhow perhaps the similarities in their personalities, ambition and outspokenness being two I can think of, are another source of conflict. I recall reading Joni saying she had (has?) a good friend who played guitar and sang. Apparently Joan befriended this friend of Joni's, and the friend essentially taught Joan how to play guitar. From my recollection, Joni said something to the effect that Joan took on the style of guitar playing and singing of her friend, that she essentially stole her soul and Joni's friend stopped playing and singing thereafter whereas Joan went on to acclaim and fame. - -- - -Mark in Florida On Wed, Feb 18, 2009 at 9:32 PM, Rian Afriadi wrote: > During Clinton's visit to Indonesia, she mentioned something about "pigeon > hole" (as a verb). > > http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/19/washington/19diplo.html?_r=1&ref=world > > Joni used the phrase too on Ladies' Man. > > But, what is "pigeon holing?" > > > Rian ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2009 #57 **************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe -------
