[anon anon ] RE: Memorial page for Smurf (NJC) - a request ["Les Irvin" Subject: re: Memorial page for Smurf (NJC) - a request Following on from Ashara's message about the web page set up for Bob Murphy, I just want to express my wish that a similar memorial page could be set up for him on our JM site, as has been done for other sadly departed JMDLers.B I know Bob did not want his ilness and final struggle discussed here on the list, but I do believe he would like to be remembered here.B Yesterday was the memorial day for Bob at Ashara's house.B I'm sure many tributes flowed in, and I think it would be good if they could be collected, together with the countless messages already posted here on the list as a reaction to Bob's passing. Below is the text I sent to Ashara a few days ago, to share with peopleB at the memorial gathering.B I hope it can be kept together with all the other tributes to a very fine, very talented and big hearted, much missedB human being. Lieve in London. Dear Smurf friends, I so wish I could join you on Monday.B I even thought about getting a cheap flight and rushing over, but it's just not do-able.B I'm just so glad that, almost a year ago, when I was talking with Bob on the phone about the Jonifest in London in the summer of 2008, he said that because of his illness he would not be able to make it.B I had wanted him to stay for some days in my house in London, to get to know him better on a one-to-one level, better than I felt we could through email or on a Jonifest with so many people around.B But I understood it was not to be.B "You could come over and visit me here in Boston", he said.B It really jolted me, gave me a very pleasant shock, to realise that for him too our togetherness could be special enough to make an effort.B "Yes I could", I said, "and I think I will." I knew that time was precious, so I decided to get on with it, and a few weeks later I landed in Boston.B I wanted to make sure I would not be a burden for him, so I was very grateful that Maggie and Alex agreed to provide the all-essential fall-back position, so that I would only need to spend time with Bob, at his place, in as much as it would suit him, without him feeling obliged.B It worked out beautifully.B Bob was a most enthousiastic, generous host.B Those memories will last me a lifetime, we talked and laughed and walked a great deal.B He was keen to show me his beautiful town, and when I left on the Monday morning he insisted on accompanying me to the right trainB for the airport.B B We were also very lucky that, as coincidence would have it, Ashara held a house concert that weekend, so Maggie and Alex took us along, and it was great to see so many well known faces.B How sadly ironic, that now, almost a year later, so many of these people are meeting at Ashara's house again to remember Bob.B And I am very sad not to be able to be there, but I know that given the choice, I am so glad I made it last year.B It is such a reminder to all of us, as if we were not aware already, how precious time is and how we need to appreciateB what we have, especially our loved ones, when we have them. It wouldB be nice to think that Bob is now watching this gathering, I know it would make him so happy.B I personally cannot believe it, but would be very happy to be wrong.B In any case, I am convinced that in a way Bob is still alive,B throughB what we carry in our heart and memory: his friendship, his wit, his uniqueness.B And in this way, by remembering him, we help each other to keep Bob Murphy alive for a long time to come. B Finally, I just need to give special thanks to Bob's angels.B There are several JMDL-ers who made big efforts to visit or send special presents, such as Kay, Patty, Chuck and Maggie.B Then there are some names like Jeff, Tracey and John Doucet whom I have never met, but I knowB of the big contributions they made in these last difficult months and weeks.B B I'm sure there are more that I'm just not aware of.B But my very, very big thanks need to go to the 2 special angels I know,B Ashara and Jody, who sat with Bob and gently eased him through the last difficult days, so that he could find peace.B Jody, thank you for the hugs you channeled for me.B Let's all help each other to keep Bob in our heart for the longest time. Lieve. - ---------- Date: Mon, 16 Feb 2009 11:11:42 -0500 From: Ashara Stansfield Subject: Memorial Page for Smurf (NJC) Sorry if this has already been posted by someone else, I haven't had aB moment to read the list. Dida! the strange thing is that Joni always talks about how Joan Baez and her didn't get along, that Baez was jealous of her and nasty to her... I wonder why Baez would ask Joni to appear on her song if she felt that way. Of course, it's possible that Joni was exaggerating, or that they grew somewhat more friendly with each other over time... relationships are pretty complex, generally speaking... > Date: Tue, 17 Feb 2009 05:39:55 -0800 > From: emzdogz@yahoo.com > Subject: Re: Dida!
