Long reply (njc) [Mags Subject: Re: Best album of 2009... Long reply (njc) From: "Victor Johnson" <<< ...I've heard so far is India.Arie Testimony Vol. 2: Love and Politics. Just all around brilliant. She's really refined and developed her sound. Reminds me of early 70's Stevie Wonder. I admire what she's doing, very difficult subject material and yet coming from her it sounds so natural. She definitely pulls it off. >>> I can't tell you how happy I am that you like this music, Victor. I have been a fan of India Arie since the 2000 mini fest in Birmingham, Michigan. One of the women there (geez I wish I could remember her name.. "move away from the shrimp"... ) introduced me to her music and I fell instantly, madly in love with it. I have both of the Volume releases: Volume 1: Life and Relationship (2006) and the new one, Volume 2: Love and Politics. Both are exceptional. On Volume 1, she does a rendition of Don Henley's "The Heart of the Matter" which he has said he likes better than his own version; video of her singing it live here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJb_Sq7_jjo I like the studio version better than the live perfomance. Her earlier releases are also very good, including her participation in the Stevie Wonder Tribute CD "Conception: An Interpretation of Stevie Wonder's Songs" where, being a huge fan of his, she did a cover of "Wonderful." Her dream came true the year she was nominated for "Best New Artist" at the Grammies 2002 when she got to do a duet with Stevie (Alicia Keys beat her out for the award and I was upset - I mean I like Alicia Keys a lot too but felt India was more talented and my personal choice.) Her video "Music in High Places" which is her playing live in the streets of Brazil was something I discovered by accident on TV one day and has been released on DVD now and is worth a watch, particularly if you're a percussion fan. I find India's lyrics very uplifting and positive "strength courage and wisdom, it's been inside of me all along" is one line that speaks to my core, along with "Always in My Head" which is about how she hears music in everything and couldn't be without it; very much the way I feel about music... You're like a cool breeze, on a summer's day You are a river running through the desert plain You are my shelter, from the pouring rain You were my comfort, even before the pain I can hear the sound of fire drummers in the wind The leaves blowing in the breeze, ring out like guitars A tin can rolls across the gravel like a tambourine I am but a vessel, so I sing, because you are [Chorus] In my head, you're always in my head In my dreams, you're always in my head In my pain, you're always in my head In my peace, you're always in my head A rainbow of rhythm stretches across the sky An airplane in the distance, plays a beautiful cello line It's no coincidence; it's in tune with the music in my head If you were a shoulder you're where I would rest, but I am your vessel so I hear, you [Chorus] In my head, you're always in my head In my fears, you're always in my head In my joy, you're always in my head In my tears, you're always in my head You're like a cool breeze, on a summer's day You are a river, running through a desert plain You've been my shelter, from the pouring rain You were my comfort, even before the pain:'cause I hear you [Chorus] In my head, you're always in my head (how can i live one day without music, how can I live one day without you) In my fears, you're always in my head (how can i live one day without music, how can I live one day without you) In my joy, you're always in my head (how can i live one day without music, how can I live one day without you) In my tears, you're always in my head and on... She has a little quirk I enjoy on her CDs. An intro, interlude and outro which are all variations on the same theme throughout the release. Anyone that's interested in more India, I'm happy to discuss and share her lyrics. Warmly, Cassy NP: India Arie - "Get It Together" One shot to your heart without breaking your skin No one has the power to hurt you like your kin Kept it inside, didnt tell no one else Didnt even wanna admit it to yourself And now your chest burns and your back aches From 15 years of holding the pain And now you only have yourself to blame If you continue to live this way [chorus:] Get it together You wanna heal your body You have to heal your heart Whatsoever you sow you will reap Get it together You can fly fly Dark future ahead of me Thats what they say Id be starving if I ate all the lies they fed Cause Ive been redeemed from your anguish and pain A miracle child Im floating on the clouds Cause the words that come from your mouth Youre the first to hear Speak of words of beauty and you will be there No matter what anybody says What matters most is what you think of yourself [chorus] The choice is yours No matter what it is To choose life is to choose to forgive You dont have to try and hurt him or break his pride Just shake that weight off And you will be ready to fly One shot to your heart without breaking your skin No one has the power to hurt you like your friends Thought it will never change but as time moved on That ugly duckling grew up to be a swan And now your chest burns and your back aches Because now the years are showing upon your face But you'll never be happy And you never be whole Until you see the beauty in growing old [chorus] ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Feb 2009 11:11:42 -0500 From: Ashara Stansfield Subject: Memorial Page for Smurf (NJC) Sorry if this has already been posted by someone else, I haven't had a moment to read the list. I will be sending warm thoughts your way. It was certainly an honor to know Smurf...he was always a regular attendee of the late night pool room jams at Full Moon. I remember one morning around 2 or 3, singing Neil Young songs, Ethel Mermen style. And the Ganga Line evening will be etched in my memory forever. Tomorrow night April and I are going to see Krishna Das at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta so I will be thinking of you then as well. peace, Victor On Feb 16, 2009, at 11:11 AM, Ashara Stansfield wrote: > Sorry if this has already been posted by someone else, I haven't had > a moment to read the list. Long reply (njc) Cassy, that's a beautiful little video you've sent of India. I like her voice a lot, havent seen any videos of her or anything like that. Much appreciate your words about her too, as well as sending along some lyrics. In particular, I am quite fond of this song by Don Henley . That guy could sing the alphabet and I'd swoon ;-) lol!
