I am at a loss for words. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Feb 2009 14:41:06 +0000 (GMT) From: Joseph Palis Subject: Reflections on the Grammy - NJC Last night's Grammy ceremony brought unexpected delight for me as a viewer. I just wished that legendary figures should be given a solo spot rather than to share the spotlight with the newer artists. But then that's the reason I will never be hired to program the Grammys ceremony because I might have cut some 'new and hot' artsist in favor of other more talented ones. B Some highlights: B Al Green in top voice. And can he hit those high notes effortlessly. His onstage movements are a joy to watch. It is like watching a prayer rally. A jubilee. Too bad Justin Timberlake was given more time to sing some lyrics. Why not let the Reverend cut loose and transform our viewing experience into a religious experience? Loved that Keith Urban fretwork in the background. Such an underrated artist. B M.I.A. all of 9 months pregnant and holding her own 'swagga; with the guys who make up the hip hop summit a.k.a. Rap Pack. I was literally afraid that she might give birth onstage but she never showed any discomfort, save for some belly-holding when she moves on the stage. Talk about commitment to one's art. I don't have any of her recorded outputs but it sure perked me up to get some online. Vince, you are the authority on this music, what do you think? B And wasn't Estelle adorable? Too bad she didn't really have chemistry with Kanye West. West seem to be just going through the motions and had this sullen (maybe even surly) attitude the whole time. Presenting the awards for Best New Artist, he can't help but mention that the Grammys have given it to John Legend and Amy Winehouse "but not to us". It would have been fun if it didn't come off a bit mean. B I actually was quite taken by the performance of Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift - -- two of the most lambasted (young) women in the music industry. Both are ridiculously popular and I guess some of the criticism against them has something to do with their commercial success. But then anyone who becomes famous always gets some backlash anyway. Even the time of music giants like Ella Fitzgerald in the '50s. Maybe since I have not really heard the entire albums of Swift and Cyrus, I was made to believe they got crappy voices housed in peppy personalities. But I was pleasantly surprised. B Bassist extraordinaire Charlie Haden as one of the presenters last night (with Jack Black) made my night. And speaking of jazz artists, the one performance that gave me the goose bumps is Allen Toussaint with the Nawlins band. That part when the camera pans a longshot of them making their way in the crowd then slowly zooming into them, made the whole thing very cinematic and very moving. B And speaking of being blown off my socks, that gloriously voiced woman from Sugarland (Jennifer Nettles?) has got to be, for me,B the night's best female vocals. Lord, the way her superb vocal control spin those vibratos and reach for high notes without over-singing, that's the stuff of legends. Makes me think of the days when musicians were music artists first before they are celebrated for their personalities. After the song, Adele came to sing and I thought she was singing under pitch because she seem to struggle with her intonation. But as the song progresses, it seems like Adele is intentionally singing this way. Maybe it is a style. It works for the most part and I am eager to visit our used CD record shop and get her CD. But when she sang with this freakishly talented woman from Sugarland on a duet, it was clear to me who is the better singer of the two. And what's more, the Sugarland singer never once stole the thunder from Adele. She enhanced the overall sound without showboating. Man, I need to get some Sugarland music now. And I am not even a fan of this music much. But ... B Not really a fan of Kid Rock, John Mayer, Justin Timberlake, Carrie Underwood, so I watched college basketball in another channel when they came on. B But loved Chris Martin and Coldplay. And I must confess I have not seen Thom Yorke move like that in a long time in live performance. I thought Radiohead should have won more than it did, but I admit that in my world, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss' album carries more weight in most categories it was nominated. Someone grumbled in a post-Grammy award assessment that Krauss and Plant's win echoed last year's 'surprise' win of Herbie Hancock for his 'jazz album of Joni songs.' Of course many of us in this List believe that the album is more than a homage to Joni -- it is a testament to this jazz pianist who, like Marian McPartland, has incorporated so many elements of music. Herbie's album showed an impeccable attention to musical details and nuance. I think the singers who were invited to sing Joni songs in that album gave a sense that it was aiming for a larger demographic to be commercial. I will not diasgree with that but the performances were ultimately mostly stellar. Plant and Krauss' album is as refreshing as itis unexpected. The delights are too various to specify. B And oh, I was also moved by Jennifer Hudson's performance. Most people see her as a tragic figure owing to the deaths of her immediate family, but I thought she showed restraint and when those tears came at the end, I was misty-eyed myself. She should release gospel-infused songs in the future. She has very few peers in that area. Fortunately, all the JMDL member from Australia that I know of are not from the area effected by the fires. Of course, it does effect us though. It is a national crisis. The worst loss of life outside of a war. So far, 173 people have been found dead. The army has been sent in to search for bodies. Approximately half of these fires have been deliberately lit and Victoria has been experiencing record breaking hot temperature so, naturally, the fires just took off across the state. Victoria Police have declared entire towns crime scenes. Firefighters from across the country have travelled there to help out. There have been some horrific stories coming out of the area. People who lost their homes in the fires and had to sleep in their cars only to be incinerated in their car. Whole families. A four car pile up as people tried to flee the area and the road became smothered with black smoke which caused zero visibility. Men who sent their families off to safety while they stayed behind to save their home only to have them drive off into the fires and perish. The nation has been mobilised. Firefighters, the army and the charities have all set up facilities to take donations. In the first day, $10 million was raised. A national telethon will be on the Nine Network to raise money on Thursday. All of us JMDLers, with the exception of John Low, live in urban areas. New South Wales has had some fires this year but they have been controlled. It is the state of Victoria that is almost completely devastated. It's a very large country and by contrast, northern Queensland is trying to cope with the worst floods in history due to a tropical cyclone that passed through there. In the middle is Sydney which is now much cooler and has rain set in. Thank you for keeping us in your thoughts as we have the people of Victoria in our thoughts. Mark in Sydney. PS My sympathies also go out to the people in Britian who are suffering those terrible blizzards. I said we were not likely to see an upset like that for album of the year again in our lifetime-but I was wrong-and pleasantly surprised that Plant/Krause won that one. Stevie Wonder with the Jonas Bros? Ehhh, Stevie, what were you thinking? That's like a fine wine with a Twinkie. Then they cut off Stevie solo song at the end of the show, and that's just wrong. There were a few enjoyable moments, but nothing exceptional in 3 1/2 hours. It's impressive that McCartney can hit those super high 'ooos' and Al Green showed Timberlake how it's done. When U2 started I could hear Bob Dylan's lawyer pick up the phone (verse stolen straight out of Subterranean Homesick Blues). And did you catch Dylan in the Pepsi commercial? Bob, you slut, you have enough money. Pepsi's new logo is an intentional copy of Obama's campaign logo. The Rap Pack? When I think of Sammy Davis Jr., who could dance, sing and act with such excellence, and see these guys who basically shout in rhythm...it really seems like a dumbing down. Now, I've heard some decent rap, but if all you can do is shout words in cadence, at least have something to say. Whitney Houston (presenting) seemed pretty spaced out. Kate Beckinsale is the hottest chick on the planet.
