At the time of the writing and performing of this album, I think Tom Waits spent quite a bit of time with sort of the underworld of Berlin. Prostitutes, drags, addicts and originals in all ways. When he says he is a rain dog too, he really says he is one of them. That you are one of us. This a learning lesson I think. And something I say to myself too, when I meet people in more challenging life situations than myself, I'm a rain dog too.. None of us are perfect. We come to world in the same way and the go the same way too. And all that satus stuff is just running after the wind. It's gone, it's gone. I'm a rain dog too. I feel really lucky growing up in a family with quite original characters. I think this has made me both more tolerant and not only that, maybe able to see the beauty in rain dogs. Because a rain dog can have very much to offer the world just in the form of being in it... I'm not sure if rain dogs has other meanings. And I'm no Tom Waits expert. But I love this quote, so I'd just had to chime in. I'm a rain dog too ! Love Oddmund N.P. I'm a rain dog too ! >>>> I found this on Wikipedia : The album's title comes from an expression which also suggests this tragic kingdom of the streets; "Rain dogs" are dogs which became lost after the rain washed away the scent of home, thus barring their return. Waits cast further light on the metaphor by stating that the album was about "People who live outdoors. You know how after the rain you see all these dogs that seem lost, wandering around. The rain washes away all their scent, all their direction. So all the people on the album are knit together, by some corporeal way of sharing pain and discomfort." Rian NP. I think that bit came in my lines, and were "live and die and live and die and live and die" Smurf did a dead beat bash on the drum thing at the end of each verse and sat there so forlornly but so full of purpose and restrained talent...BEinge everything and nothing in the performance.. On www.hatstand.org in the Fest 2003 in Lucy's pictures is a photo of Smurf with Patrick and Chris Marshall when we did a beer run to the local store. I called it three little boys in blue as they were all dressed pretty much the same. I hold my conversations with Smurf as wonderful memories of the funniest man alive. He was to have attended UK Fest last year and was looking forward to it as he had lived around the area and knew it well when he was a young lad. Anyway he is gone to the Fest in the Sky, all the concerts he could want to and become the best photoshop person in the universe... Passing on the whatever there is opens so many opportunities denied us in this part of our life. Going to miss him but thankful he and I crossed paths.. Published by the U of Calif Press, the book is full of personal narratives of students who graduated in this educational system. I did not really read the book but as I scanned the first few pages, Joni's lyrics to BSN was used to preface the first chapter. I thought this is a nice touch. It is both a homage to the artist herself and the timelessness of her words/lyrics. Written at a precocious young age too. I kinda like books that use lyrics of songs in the pages before the preface. One of the most memorable is Stevie Wonder's lyrics "Show me how to do like you/Show me how to do it". Can you guess the title of the book (and its writer) where this line was used? This web site is really amazing, double-click on an area and the photo zooms in, wait a moment for it to re-focus then double click again to zoom in closer. The picture was taken with a Canon robotic 1,474 megapixel camera (295 times the standard 5 megapixel camera). The camera pulled together over 200 individual shots to complete the panorama.
