The Telarc Jazz disc, which celebrates romance, features original songs as well as tunes by Cole Porter, Stevie Nicks, Harold Arlen, Joni Mitchell, Chick Corea and more. The new recording, according to press notes, "is a mix of jazz standards, versatile pop songs and a couple original tunes, each woven together to create a narrative that is perhaps as cinematic as it is musical." In a previous statement Callaway said, "I always think of CDs like movies. You wouldn't download one scene from a movie. You want the whole thing, the whole story. An album shouldn't be just a bunch of songs in a sequence that's front-loaded with hits. It's really about creating an emotional journey that starts in one place and ends in a place that's very different." Callaway is backed by pianist Ted Rosenthal, bassist Jay Leonhart and drummer Victor Lewis. Guest musicians include guitarist Rodney Jones, violinist Mads Tolling, saxophonist Teodross Avery, flugelhornist Marvin Stamm, trombonist Wycliffe Gordon and percussionist Emedin Rivera. The complete track listing for "At Last" follows: "What Is This Thing Called Love?" - Cole Porter "Comes Love" - Lew Brown, Sammy Sept, Charles Tobias "Carey" - Joni Mitchell "At Last" - Mack Gordon, Harry Warren "Spain" - Arte Maren, Al Jarreau, Joaquin Rodrigo, Chick Corea "Lazy Afternoon" - Jerome Moross, John Latouche "Landslide" - Stevie Nicks "Save a Place for Me" - Ann Hampton Callaway "Over the Rainbow - Yip Harburg, Harold Arlen "Finding Beauty" - Ann Hampton Callaway "On My Way to You" - Alan and Marilyn Bergman, Michel Legrand Not only a singer, Ann Hampton Callaway is also an acclaimed songwriter, whose works have been performed by Barbra Streisand, Patti LuPone and dozens of others. For her Broadway bow in Swing!, Callaway garnered a Tony nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical, and her many recordings include "Ann Hampton Callaway," "Bring Back Romance," "To Ella with Love" and "After Ours." Callaway is also a recipient of 14 Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs (MAC) Awards. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Feb 2009 10:39:51 -0500 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: Re: New Joni Cover I listened to a sample yesterday and it sounds great. There is going to be a ballet performance of a Joni song (right now they aren't sure if they can do the CBC theme one because they discovered how much it would cost to get rights!). And Joni will probably be there, but doesn't want anyone to get upset if she is ill and can't come, so they aren't advertising that outright. They're having trouble selling the tickets, so I thought it couldn't hurt to put a shout out here about it in case you or someone you know might be interested in attending. I have a pdf with a form and pricing (it's ouch, expensive, since it's a major fundraiser) that I can send to anyone who's interested! I won't attach it here as I think it probably wouldn't come through or would take up a ton of bandwidth for people. But if you want me to send it to you, please drop me a line! I've no doubt it will be a wonderful event no matter how it shapes up. When I asked him what was up, he told that Greenville County Schools were closed for snow - even though there was not ONE flake on the ground. We had not checked the news that morning since nothing had fallen - just the THREAT of snow shut things down. I also recall that Nathan didn't seem to mind a whole lot. Many thanks, Les ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Feb 2009 12:50:50 -0800 (PST) From: Mags Subject: Re: NJC Old Faces on UK MiniFest/Now weather hello to all my snow bound friends. i love the subject of weather, as it affects many decisions made as to what to wear (or not), how much travel time to allow yourself and so on. catherine, i was living in the toronto area at the time of that great snow fall. it was unreal. there were caves made out of towering snow banks for cars to somehow park on the streets. it was a disaster and whilst toronto and all points southern ontario are quite used to getting massive amounts of snow, no one was prepared for the literal fall out from that three day storm. as for living in a city that hosts winter from november (and sometimes early october) until well into march and sometimes april...and it even snowed in june one year..i have a few things to say about being used to snow; having a host of snow clearning machinery at the ready. with all that said, as oddmund pointed out, even though we have a long winter season, and even though great machines are equipped to clear the roads, each and every time it snows, there's what could be described as mass panic in the streets! it's hilarious , really. sometimes it takes ages for the trucks to get into the neighbourhoods, and then there's the back laneways which are inevitably snowbound. good luck getting your car out of there when there's mountains of snow piled up all over the place. man made snow drifts/piles are not fun. the roads do get cleared, as best as they can. however, salt is not used here at all. there is sand along with some 'salt-like' mixture, which is not necessarily the most effective. the good news is that the cars arent affected with rust that we well know never sleeps ;-) ... the downside is that the roads remain slippery, hidden patches of ice beneath the surface of snow packed down by the trucks and cars. winnipeg is known for its impatient drivers at the best of times. add snowbound roads to the mix, and all hell breaks loose. i've seen cars on their side, up a snow bank , as they have stepped on the gas pedal a little too hard. and it doesnt take much at all! and then there are all the ruts in the road caused by aforementioned lack of salt/effective snow melty stuff...so there's that. if you need to make a turn from the road, then you have to be sure not to press too fast ahead, otherwise, you are spinning in circles across lanes of traffic coming right at you! it is cold. full stop. i know it's winnipeg, i know we are supposed to accept this with grace however, it is cold! one of our inside jokes is that hey, it's not so bad, it's a dry cold, but damnation, dry or not, it's enough to freeze your damp hair into icicles in minutes. frost bite warning are real, and fashion statements go right out the window..no one gives a darn what you are wearing, as long as you are warm, who cares. and there's something wonderful and freeing about that.! so yes, we do get snow, winter, for months on end, but it's not easy. it is exhausting to merely stay warm, and tiring at times, to even think about all the darn layers one has to put on in order to just go outside to the store. with the days growing longer, hope is back. winter will soon be a faint memory, and i'll be getting down deep into the gardens once again. i can almost smell the dirt now. there you have it, life in the Peg. hey have y'all ever heard of "ice roads"...now that's another kettle of fish. We northerners like to poke fun at the panic that ensues when non-snow areas get hit, but really... we would be ill-prepared to deal with hurricanes. Actually we're often not that good (in Toronto, I mean) at snow removal either. The rest of the country likes to make fun of the time, about ten years ago, when then-mayor Lastman (noted for his foot-in-mouth disease) asked the Canadian Forces to come and help with snow removal in Toronto. That was a very unusual snowfall though - I think it snowed non-stop for three days and we had more in that period than we normally get in an entire winter. This has been a heavy year for snow here, but at least it doesn't all fall in one go. - --- On Tue, 2/3/09, Donna Binkley wrote: Mark & Oddmund, Here in the "deep south" it does snow occasionally, but our cities are totally unprepared for snow or ice. It snows so seldom that they don't keep machines to salt or sand the roads. To have them and maintain them only to be used every 10 years or less is too expensive, so they simply don't buy them. Hence, when the roads do ice over, everyone is just told to stay home. Then of course you get those people who don't believe it (I guess) and go up onto the iced over freeways only to be stranded there sliding backwards or off the road completely and have to be rescued. Not unlike the hurricane victims here who stay intending to ride it out, and sometimes are never seen again. Hurricane Ike destroyed a little penninsula off our gulf coast and more than 30 people who stayed are still missing. Only a few bodies were found. Well there's my catastrophe report for the day! The good news is that after the horror of Ike we had a surprisingly mild winter, only about 60 degrees F for a high today, almost like spring! The Toronto ones are not so great, especially downtown. It seems that, whenever there's snow or rain, people completely forget how to drive. You have the ones that drive like little old ladies and the others who behave as if it's a regular day and they're top dog and have to get ahead of everyone and drive 20 km over the speed limit as always. And the horn honking that doesn't seem to end even if it's 3 a.m. and there are few cars on the road and it doesn't seem there could be any reason to have to use the horn at all, and yet... Toronto has gotten very cheap about doing any roadwork for a number of years because various mayoral candidates have promised not to raise taxes, which is the mantra of politicians. And of course, without the tax money, you run out of cash to fix things or get new things. Between the political wish to keep taxes down and supposedly to be reelected and the constant construction of yet more overpriced and very small condos, our roads are in terrible shape and I'm sure you could sail a boat in some of the larger potholes on a rainy day. And each layer of politicians passes the blame to another - the city says the province and the country should give it more for infrastructure, the province says it's up to the feds and the feds either say nothing or else tell the city to fix its own problems. And now we can blame it all on the economy, so don't expect any money from anyone. At least our winter is not quite as long as yours and I guess that's why the call it Winterpeg. It's snowing here today, is supposed to get bloody cold for the next two days after and then it's supposed to go up above freezing for the weekend. We're such sky-orientated people, geared to changing weather. - --- On Tue, 2/3/09, Mags wrote: hello to all my snow bound friends. i love the subject of weather, as it affects many decisions made as to what to wear (or not), how much travel time to allow yourself and so on. ... winnipeg is known for its impatient drivers at the best of times. add snowbound roads to the mix, and all hell breaks loose. i've seen cars on their side, up a snow bank , as they have stepped on the gas pedal a little too hard. and it doesnt take much at all! __________________________________________________________________ Ask a question on any topic and get answers from real people. I had a quick look at the JMDL mail. Following our mini-fest i had what i can term "the great London snowy adventure". The city seemed to completely shut down. I had two extra nights and days in London. Luckily, i had met a friend of a friend, funnily also named Dermot, in the airport. We spent the two days laughing at how odd the entire situation was, shopping for shoes that would resist the snow (it is not so pleastant to walk around in six inches - and more in places - of snow in wet trainers and wet socks), drinking G&Ts on Old Compton street while meeting some very odd London people. It was a great relief bumping into someone i knew as it made the entire experience much more pleasant. It was great as we both had the attitude "well, there's nothing i can do about this i may as well enjoy it sure". Before i get a much needed shower let me just thank Lieve for her hospitality. I had not been to Greenwich before and Lieve gave us a great taster of it on the Sunday. Saturday was a wonderful day spent hanging out in Lieve's lovely home. I drank a lot of tea and beer and wine. I ate well. I enjoyed the music and the chat. My bloody face was sore though from laughing. I won't go through musical highlihghts, but i loved it all. It was all very informal compared to a "big" fest, with the guitar being handed around to anyone that wanted to play. Credit to Martin for opening the day with a John Martyn song, allowing us to tip our hats to the man. It was great to see the joni-gang again. Dermot thinks we are maybe only slightly less mad than he expected;-) I think i took about four photographs, but i did get a few of a frozen Trafalgar Square. I'll put them onto the computer in a day or two. I'm all for the idea of meeting up once or twice a year. Don't think i'll make it to Oz though. So much more to say but i'm running out of words right now. B I like this singer too -- one of the loveliest alto voices out there. But then I prefer alto voices in general even if that means admitting that I am for mid- to late-period Joni. This is speaking voice-wise. B Ann Hampton Callaway is indeed a good songwriter although a few songs she did can get precious and indulgent in my ears (e.g. "I'm-too-white-to-sing-the-blues Blues" from the Blues in the Night CD). Saw her as one of the performers of the Cabaret Convention in 2005 or 2006... I forgot now what year. She composed a song on the spot to honor jazz pianist and occasional singer Barbara Carroll. That night had some good performers and a few that I will probably not liking to hear anytime soon. But AHC was among the night's highlights along with Laurel Masse and Adi Braun. B AHC sung 'Twisted' in one of her albums called 'Signature' backed by the New York Voices. It was a fun ride without being cloying. B Will check her new album out. I wish she'd cover the blues of the mostly forgotten blueswomen-singers of the 1920s-30s like Ida Cox, Sippie Wallace, Memphis Minnie, Margaret Johnson, Virginia Liston and more. She can pull it off. For her Broadway bow in Swing!, Callaway garnered a Tony nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical, and her many recordings include "Ann Hampton Callaway," "Bring Back Romance," "To Ella with Love" and "After Ours."
