It sounds ideal. Lieve, you sound like a born hostess. Can't wait to meet you at OzFest. I hope, together, we can create the same sort of warm and welcoming atmosphere. Obviously, it won't be the same as strolling though Greenwich but, I hope to create the same feelings with bush walks in Kangaroo Valley. I hope that some of the other Brits who were there can make it to OzFest too. How about it Jamie? Garrett? Jeff? For those who might have seen the news about the heatwave hitting Australia right now, don't panic. Only the southern states are experiencing this at the moment and it is a once in 80 years phenomenon. March is usually a bit cooler too. I have not written anything on OzFest for a while because most of the planning has been done and I want to give people a chance to concentrate on SoCal JoniFest for now. I will be posting the information again soon as a reminder of the details. The Australian Open is over now and Nadal is the new champion - incredible stamina. Australia's heroine is Jelena Dockic - the comeback queen. All the way to the semis and people thought her career was over. Turns out, she went further this time than ever before. Heatwaves actually kill more people in Australia than any other weather phenomena. More than cyclones or bushfires. The people of Victoria and South Australia have really suffered this week. Spare a thought for the 40 people who died this week from the heat. Sydney has been pretty uncomfortable but not like the Adelaide and Melbourne. My heart goes out to them. I stay cool by thinking of people like Lucy, hoping for snow in Hampshire. Mmmmmm, snow.... If you have not heard of him , many contemporary musicians cite him as a major influence, I know Laurent on this list was a big fan - in fact it was because of him we met in Glasgow. Ironic news given Laurent's last post . Martin was only 60 but had a history of illnesses and mishaps but didn't lose his sense of humour. After losing a leg, he refered to himself as a living leg -end. My love for John Martyn began in 75. Listening to a 77 concert last weekend made me realize how modern his sound was for the times. Since John wouldn't tour outside the U.K anymore, i went to Glasgow in 2002 and met Gordon & Willy the Shake. John Martyn's gig was cancelled due to a car accident. Then there was the amputation and JM obviously stopped touring. When a gig was scheduled at the end of 2003 in a small pub in Leap, Ireland, i wouldn't miss that chance and jumped on a plane. Indeed this 1st gig for almost 2 years was magical. At first i asked his partner Teresa whether John would let me film the gig and she said that John wouldn't allow it. When John walked by i told him how sad i was since Teresa said he wouldn't allow filming. With a mischievous look he said he wouldn't mind ! I told him it was for private use but he didn't really care (in fact he let me film him the next day and also in 2004 when he recognized me as < the man from Leap >). Well now i'm sure that wherever he is he'll love giving more musical pleasure to a lot of people. So i am sending the tapes to a fan in the U.K who is going to synch the video with the MD recording. I plan on posting the finished dvd on the usual bittorrent sites. In 2007 i took my daughter to London's Roundhouse for a < Solid Air > concert. Seeing the physical changes in only 2 years I remember thinking that JM was not going to live very long. But he seemed to enjoy his renewed popularity and kept touring relentlessly. 6 months ago i met JM's long time musical partner Danny Thompson backstage. Danny told me he was well aware of JM's degrading health and how he loved the man so much. Danny said he just got JM's promise that they would both go to NY's Mt Sinai hospital where a physician/fan was dedicated to saving JM's life. Well you know the rest. JM obviously didn't care about living old as he carried on his drinking. One has to accept his choice and relish the memories. I read somewhere Dylan said all of Mitchell's lyrics are "top drawer." These songs certainly warrant that distinction for me. Cheers! I was disappointed in CBC radio (which is "public radio" here) for going with the popular tunes when they had people suggest their favourite Joni song a while back - but then again, if it's mostly regular shmoes picking, I suppose you can't expect anything they didn't hear somewhere on the radio (probably commercial radio though.) It was so lovely to see faces, both old and young :))) and to meet the new. To have a face in mind for Azeem and Jackie is really super. I find it just wonderful to have sing-alongs to Joni. It blows me away every time to be in a room full of people singing along to Hejira. I mean, how hard is that to sing along to? It just wouldn't happen anywhere else and, don't forget peeps, I have waited nearly 40 years to find folk who knew the words to Joni songs as well as me. And some people (Jeff) know them even better! It's really great for me. I am also feeling profoundly grateful for Lucy's description of my version of 'There's mo business like show business' as 'stirring.' In a room which contained a fair number of gay men, I feel this is a HUGE compliment. It could be said that I out-Merman-ed them. As a consequence, I have decided to ditch my musical set of Joni songs and my own dreary life observations. I am going to strap on those heels, buy a big wig, stick on my false eyelashes, splash out on a fabulous shiny, long and strapless frock. I am sewing thousands of additional sequins onto a tiara as we speak. I saw an ad executive on the Early Show this morning and he thought that may have been the best ad yesterday. That it gave hope and pride to Americans during this tough time. Although I also loved the Doritos crystal ball and the Mr. & Mrs Potato head was pretty good. Also there was another Coke Commercial which was not meant to be funny, but was very artistic and beautiful. There is a guy lounging in the grass and all these insects join together to take his coke away. Also agreed - really great game ... exciting and full of suspense - with 3 or 4 big game changing plays. But wow very little running attack - for either team. Glad the Steelers won too. I love Bruce - not like his biggest fan ( not like our Rosie), but a lot of respect and admiration for him. I thought he was simply ELECTRIFYING last night. I felt it right through the television - great performance. And kudos to Jennifer Hudson showing up - even if she and Faith Hill lip synced their songs. - I can't imagine how difficult it has been for her. Was very surprised that he picked the title track from his new one instead of the first single - oh well, the only thing you can expect from Bruce is the unexpected. Loved when he did his knee-slide and wiped out the camera guy. Petraeus may be a good military man but he can't flip a coin to save his neck. Jennifer Hudson nailed the National Anthem and threw in some new diva frills that I hadn't heard before. Last year's game and this year's game were both worthy of being championship games unlike in some years past where it was a blowout by one team or the other. I really wanted Arizona to win but, honestly, the Steelers deserved their victory and cudos to them. Bo wrote <<< What Is the Conficker Virus and Should You Be Worried? - Switched >>> I use an anti virus program by Trend Micro called PC-Cillin and have for years. I like it's ease of use and a 5-seat license (my computer, my husband's, my son's, our laptop, my mother-in-law's) is economical and works. This year when our license was coming close to expiration I went to their site to update to the current year but wasn't able to complete the process after several tries. I phoned them and was told to phone an alternate number who gave me a third number who then directed me back to the website which didn't work! When I explained this to the person on the phone they then gave me the first number I had called. It was amazing to me that their customer service was so poor when their technical help has been so good. Ultimately I discovered that a 5-seat license is no longer available unless one is a small business (which I'm not) and the license had to be purchased through a third-party source. All of this took several days and during that time I got a "virus." The one to really watch for is called MS AntiSpyware 2009. If you don't use virus protection of some sort this program installs itself on your computer and pop-ups begin to appear. The pop-ups look exactly like Microsoft windows and begin scanning your drives, then other windows pop-up and tell you that if you want to "fix" the errors it found you must pay to upgrade. On closing the windows they just continue to pop up. One cannot change viewing options in My Computer to allow viewing of hidden files, that option is taken away by the program. One cannot -Start-run-regedit (edit your registry to eliminate the process) because the program forces a pop-up which states the administrator has "forbidden" access! Hello... I AM the administrator and did no such thing. Using a browser the program denies access to any pages which might help you rid yourself of it. Fortunately I had access to an alternate computer to go hunting for advice. It took me a while to figure out how to rid myself of this nasty little piece of sh*& program but I finally did and am back among the living again. Fortunately no major damage was done to my system. I have an excellent program which helped me by UniBlue called "Registry Booster" which does an automatic registry repair and paid for itself during this episode. Needless to say I was majorly angry with Trend Micro. Interestingly, once Trend Micro was up and running again the program attempted to re-install itself from another website but was caught. On checking the directory path I had gone to previously the file was back on my computer again but inactive. I believe I know where this program came from. I had gone to Youtube to look at the video of the Canadian Olympic protests and noticed the video was from "Real News dot com." I thought "Oh, I'd like to see what else they might have that's interesting" and went there to look; it was then that pop-ups began. So be careful out there boys and girls and be sure to use some kind of anti-virus software - especially if you're a PC user. Thank you Lieve for such a wonderful, welcoming, friendly, thoughtful gathering. It was lovely for John and I to meet Azeem at last and Jackie and see the old faces of Lieve, Les, Chris, Garrett (and meet Dermott) Jeff Hankins, Anita and Steph, Jaimie Zoob, Bene -( who had not come all the way from Sweden - in joke) and Martin (who is lodging with me so I get to see him a lot) Set in Lieve's lovely home in Greenwich (with views from the top floor over London) we enjoyed some lovely sing alongs to all sorts of music - including Joni. It staggered us all that we all sang along to Hejira, Magdalene Laundries, No regrets Coyote, Circle game, Urge for going and lots of other songs. Thank you Martin for the lovely "may you never" in tribute to John Martin and for Anita's stirring rendition of "there is no business like Show Business" - you had to be there really.... Fab food, great wine and beer, lots of laughs, a snow flurried walk around Greenwich and a wonderful lunch in a Vietnamese restaurant, Ah this indeed is what life is about, building memories, affirming friendships, 15 people all getting along fine. Such things are what make communities like this an astonishing phenomenon and we will all in different formats be doing this around the world... Love, light and many many thanks to Lieve for making it happen.
