The Joni Tribute at Carnegie Hall. Citigroup Cafe. Seppis. Gary staring a hole in his scrambled eggs in the French Barangrill while the Ladies of the Canyon (DB, Sherelle, Cassy) croqued monsieurs. Shine on lady liberty foam hats in the tourist shop while the big yellow taxis whizzed by. Strawberry Fields Forever w/ Sherelle in Central Park. Imagine. Well, we can't return, so Kalo Mina! The concerts are in the new Murray Theater, an intimate club like setting. Following will be Karla Bonoff, Janis Ian, and Livingstone Taylor. Melanie was fabulous, as always, giving a near 4 hour show. Her chat and stories are just so interesting. She started by commenting on all the huge SuperBowl events in the area, so she renamed her show The Melanie Big SuperBowl Event! When she busted a guitar string her BeauHunky son Beau, who plays in the show with her, grabbed her guitar to restring it for her. It happened to be G string, and she made numerous references to broken G Strings all over Tampa Bay at other SuperBowl parties. It was hysterical. Then, because she couldn't play the guitar until Beau finished, she burst into an acapella Somewhere Over the Rainbow, which alone got her a standing ovation. As always, she met her fans after the show. I of course had to bring up Joni since her name was in the program narrative. She told me they were all in Greenwich Village around the same time and told me a great story about Fed Neill. She was friends with him early on and claims he was the first to play in D and other open tunings and thinks Joni first picked it up from him, long before her Laurel Canyon Days. That makes sense to me. I have an early recording somewhere of Joni and Fred playing together, Song to the Dolphin, at a benefit. Melanie said the business chewed him up they way it does to many and he came to Florida in the early 70's and was never heard of. She said it was a shame that Nillson gets all the credit for Everybody's Talkin', even though Fred wrote it. One fabulous SuperBowl event that even I could enjoy. Just last week I was playing a gig with another musician who covered 'Everybody's Talkin'' and said he would give a CD to the first person in the audience who could say who wrote it. A few people shouted out Harry Nilsson, but no one knew Fred Neil. What a great story about Joni maybe getting inspired by his use of open tunings. Fred was one of mhy early heros- like Ms. Mitchell, great disdain for the music industry- he was always happier swimming with the dolphins. Thank you Lieve for such a wonderful, welcoming, friendly, thoughtful gathering. It was lovely for John and I to meet Azeem at last and Jackie and see the old faces of Lieve, Les, Chris, Garrett (and meet Dermott) Jeff Hankins, Anita and Steph, Jaimie Zoob, Bene -( who had not come all the way from Sweden - in joke) and Martin (who is lodging with me so I get to see him a lot) Set in Lieve's lovely home in Greenwich (with views from the top floor over London) we enjoyed some lovely sing alongs to all sorts of music - including Joni. It staggered us all that we all sang along to Hejira, Magdalene Laundries, No regrets Coyote, Circle game, Urge for going and lots of other songs. Thank you Martin for the lovely "may you never" in tribute to John Martin and for Anita's stirring rendition of "there is no business like Show Business" - you had to be there really.... Fab food, great wine and beer, lots of laughs, a snow flurried walk around Greenwich and a wonderful lunch in a Vietnamese restaurant, Ah this indeed is what life is about, building memories, affirming friendships, 15 people all getting along fine. Such things are what make communities like this an astonishing phenomenon and we will all in different formats be doing this around the world...
