Sarah McLachlan and a bunch of others are participating too. Anyway, they were recycling the posters because they have the wrong dates - it says it goes Feb 26-29 and there isn't a Feb 29 this year! However, I didn't like "Juno" for many of the reasons you state, so it's got to be the Diablo Cody factor. I agree, it's like she tries too hard to be hip and cute and that doesn't work for me because it's way too self-conscious or something. (The fact that she calls herself "Diablo Cody" is proof enough for me.) I saw "Juno" because everyone said how wonderful it was, but I found it really annoying, especially the first half. The girl was too precocious and I got the feeling someone (the character of Juno or Diablo Cody perhaps) was like one of those too-smart/too-cool-for-school kids who wanted everyone to pay attention to them because they're so hip and shocking and nothing phases them. I also find Ellen Page annoying for reasons that I can't explain. Sometimes it just is what it is. - --- On Thu, 1/29/09, Vince wrote: Oh Vince, always so negative. I was excited because - Duh! - Toni Collette & Diablo Cody ... my girl was kind of big deal. So we watched the first episode - somewhat with me watching her - watch ...LOL! Carefully upon the second episode's time slot - I said kind of nonchalant - So waddya wanna watch now? She said, that Tara show, I thought that was in our repertoire now? And after that episode I dared ask - "So do you like it?" She said she's getting into it and interested to see how it goes. Woo HOOO! I do like it - I am not sure yet it's super great but it's pretty darn good. It needs another episode or two and then I'll be able to tell you if they've hit one out of the park - for me at least. Collette's performance is superb though- undeniably. TV is so good for the winter blues. Thanks to hulu.com or some-such sites for people like me who can't watch things anymore on tv except only sports. ;-) I like/love Toni Collette. I think she is brilliant but oh so underrated. She is just consistently good even in films that are not that great (In Her Shoes, Connie & Carla), so I am eager to see her do various 'alters'. Speaking of tv series, the only one that has kept me glued is "Damages" with Glenn Close as a high-stakes litigator. The first two episodes of the second season show a more pacified Patty Hewes (Close) but I think there is a tighter plot and storyline that will make this even better than the first one. Plus William Hurt and Marcia Gay Hardin are also on-board. Finally, just like most tv series that I am crazy about, the 'Damages' theme song is just so addictive ~ The VLA's "When I'm Through With You". I'm not saying Juno was really believable, it was caricature and over-the-top in much the same way that "Little Miss Sunshine" was, but in both cases I thought the script was original, funny, and touching and I cared about what happened to the characters. I will say that I can see how you find Ellen page annoying - I've seen her in a number of films (most recently "Wilby Wonderful") and she's either a 1-trick pony acting wise or she just gets cast in the same kind of roles. Then again, lots of actors play the same character over and over again and make a pretty good living from it. Sarah McLachlan and a bunch of others are participating too. Anyway, they were recycling the posters because they have the wrong dates - it says it goes Feb 26-29 and there isn't a Feb 29 this year! I recently wrote all about my experience with listening to THOSL, alone (the way I wanted it) on the 18TH floor of one of those tall buildings in center city Philly. By the way, I lived communally for many years and my apartment was home to many, many gorgeous souls. How did I listen to THOSL alone???? Simple. I locked the door!!!! Usually it was open as people tended to come and crash any ole' time. Well, as you all know, THOSL was released in 1975. I had surgery in 1975 and was so beautifully cared for by about 25 people. They had parties every night to take my mind off of the pain!!!! I CLEARLY recall lying on my mattress (on the floor) NOT drowsy from paid meds, when a guy I had a HUGE crush on walked in. He gently sat on the mattress (yeah, and I had to be recovering from surgery...bummer) and handed me Joni's latest album. "Bend down honey and let me give ya a kiss!!" I KNOW it was NOT THOSL. He (and everyone else knew) how much I adored Joni and that I had one or more copies of every album that was released prior to THOSL. I KNOW it was 1975, I know I had surgery that year, I KNOW I wasn't loopy when he came in, and I KNOW the album he gave me was NOT THOSL. Believe me, I have a VERY accurate memory of that moment. He told me he had something he KNEW I would LOVE...geeezzz, you can imagine what I was thinking...but, a brand new Joni album is more important than just about anything. Weird. Just wanted to share this with you. Juno was so over hyped and just way too much, too cute, although I liked Juno as a character and I liked Bleeker as a character and I liked their little song (by the Moldy peaches IIRC) they sang at the end but I didn't buy the conceit of that concept because the adults were all so crated just to mock midwest or middle class or working class values - every adult in juno was reduced to a sit com idiot to be laughed at. But there was something about Juno that I liked one the less, and I do like Ellen page and Michael Cera as actors. Ellen Page blew me away in An American Crime and Cera was great in Superbad and the best part of Arrested Development So I am not a Diablo Cody fan although at least in Tara she respects adults more but it is still a mock of values that Cody thinks are beneath her - but what is the show about? It is about nothing and I don't mean that in in Seinfeld sense because that was a show that was a running commentary on culture, or a Larry David sense since that is show that is little hilarious slice of life commentary on culture - I follow the Gene Siskel philosophy - I want to see something new, something I have not seen before. I have seen brilliant portrayals of multiple personality disorder that Joanne Woodward and Sally Fields did that took us into understanding sme depth there - but Tara is like My Mother the Car - let's find a funny concept for a sit com where we can swear and have sex and drugs and we got Toni Collette! I mean, the Secret Diary of a Call Girl is a show that usually bores me but at least is an exploration of a life that we haven't much reflected on in a unique way and there have been occasional great insights given - the issue of sex as just sex when her male friend got involved in the "swapping, that was brilliant. For pete's sake, Tara even has the same opening at Juno. Characters merging into cartoons, ok we got that. Do something insightful, new.
