I have to say, I did laugh, too, especially the seemingly calm way your wife says 'Oh there she is, two rows behind'. Having read several accounts of seeing/meeting Joni (Julius' encounter in a lift springs most readily to mind) it is extraordinary how merely being in close proximity to someone whose music has meant so much causes this kind of body chaos. I am so glad you managed your panic and were able to focus on the ballet. And your wife sounds very cool! (I imagine thats old news here), but have absolutely loved hearing Jonis original guitar and vocal takes on the tunes without the band. Harrys House sounds so different with the guitar at the foreground. I have always (like so many here) have loved Sweet Bird. Its a song that spoke something to me on a remarkable level. I recall a thread about the song some years ago (I think its in the archive) where it became apparent that the song is really out there somewhere. My third choice is Edith and the Kingpin. I simply adore the line He tips their tired faces to the spoon. Awesome. HOSL is an album Ive appreciated more and more through the years and seems to become more and more relevant. Even typing out the words I am moved. Its like the whole thing swallows me . I go into my own whale as it were. So many people have said its a weak Joni song. I dont get that and I dont apologise for loving it every time. Sweet Bird because it is astoundingly beautiful and just reeks of truth and real prophetic truth at that.Anima Rising. What can be said? The album is a beauty. Its almost Holy. i say "almost" with an apple in my jaw. The thing is Sacred. And then from out of the summery sounds of THOSL came a perfect winter. Don Juan with its red sun come ro-o-olin down a grey sky seemed to take us back in time back to the summer the late summer, back to the autumn, to the stripping off of the layers to the language of memories, dreams and reflections and to the rain too. But i waffle. You ask us to name three songs from THOSL that we can call our own I guess. Thems my three . This is such a strange album, isn't it? I'd pick 1) Harry's House, because for me it is the most emblematic song on this album, certainly one of the most accessible from the standpoint of the lyrics. I think this song is the backbone of the album, and I always love the surprise segue to Centerpiece - Joni's jazz ! 2) Boho, for the gorgeous soaring melody and piano. An overlooked song which deserves more airplay ! 3) Shadows & Light - because its sound and structure is so unusual in Joni's catalogue, and the lyrics are great. Love the soothing, spiritual feel and the layered choir tracks. No black without white. Michael in Quebec PS Do let us know what your final choices are Jim ! Oh, I dunno, RR, I'm not sure that public radio is necessarily above going for the commercial tune if they think it will draw listeners. Just thought I'd throw that out there for yiz, for no particular reason. I was disappointed in CBC radio (which is "public radio" here) for going with the popular tunes when they had people suggest their favourite Joni song a while back - but then again, if it's mostly regular shmoes picking, I suppose you can't expect anything they didn't hear somewhere on the radio (probably commercial radio though.) I get a bit miffed when it's always "Both Sides Now" that ends up on those lists - even though it's good to hear Joni's name mentioned at all (speaking of both sides now.) But I don't do lists, so don't listen to me. > > RR, who dreamed of Joni last night, she was singing, but > was > only two inches tall She must have been using the helium voice then! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jan 2009 04:26:51 +0000 From: Patti Parlette Subject: Paved Paradise Redux, and the Art of Being Joni Dear Joniamigos: I saw Paved Paradise Redux yesterday and it was fan-tastic!
