Warmly, Cassy" Cassy and my friends west of here, I have just woken up having spent all day yesterday working, and only catching highlights of the inauguration late last night. Bob, I was so touched to read about your lunchtime - it sounded wonderful. Here I am, it's first thing in the morning and it does feel to me like a whole new world. The newspapers and TV are full of yesterday's events I, like Lieve, don't often feel inclined to post about politics yet, today, I do feel hopeful that we are posed on the edge of a new era. B I also have her two latest albums ("I've Got My Own Hell to raise" and "Scene of the Crime") like most of you and both are wonderful.B B B "Scene of the Crime" benefitted from the musical intervention of Drive-By Truckers and the album is a smoky scorcher that reveals some layers with each listen. "I've Got My Own Hell to Raise" is stark and very beautifully realized. Her raspy voice when singing a song a capella seems to have come from a well of lived experience. Anyone who can reinvent songs by Sinead O'Connor, Aimee Mann and Dolly Parton and give them soulful readings radically different from the original, have genius genes in them. Not just flare and unrealized talent. B Joe Henry should produce more albums. Same with Jack White who produced Loretta Lynn's brilliant "Van lear Rose". I have been disappointed a bit by Ry Cooder's too-slick production of then album of another gifted singer -- Mavis Staples. I like savvy arrangements that are radical but still work and not just all flash. In fact if I may admit this publicly, Scarlett Johansson's "Anywhere I Lay My Head: A Tribute to Tom Waits" actually have more substance and musical muscle than I initially thought. I like the 4AD sounds that distort her voice and present it as an entirely new sound. At the onset I thought Scarlett's album will be just one of those vanity projects from movie celebrities lacking in inventiveness and a musical producer who is willing to take chances, but several months after I bought that album, I actually thought that Scarlett's album might stand the test of time. Strictly an acquired taste, I am not sure I'll casually recommend this album, but I think Scarlett's album's winning ways come from repeated listening over a period of time. B I also recomemnd Bettye's "A Woman Like Me". This is actually my first intro to Bettye and loved her with every successive album she makes. The media haven't had a whole lot to criticize yet but were happy to jump on the bandwagon denigrating President Obama's speechwriters... bad grammar and no "standout phrase" they could grab on to and run with. (read... they didn't get their sound bite and they were bitching) I thought this made the speechwriters brilliant; providing no sound bite meant they had to rerun more of the speech, if they'd had their soundbite that's all we would have been fed on the news... personally I think this is a good thing. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Jan 2009 11:27:08 -0500 From: Subject: Re: Bettye Lavette [NJC] + inauguration hi folks- i've been meaning to write about bettye levette for a week or so. like a lot of jmdlers, i first heard her at the carnegie joni tribute, singing last chance lost. single best performance of the evening. bought and nearly wore out 'hell to raise' in may that year, had a lovely sunday afternoon free outdoor concert from her in madison square park. we were about 20 feet from her; so much fun. i missed the kennedy center honors, but i just read that her version of the who's 'love reign o'er me' was amazing. now (and i missed it too!!), i heard her duet with jon bon jovi at the sunday inaugural event was also fantastic. i'm not really going to vow to watch more tv, but once in a while, i do need to sit my butt down!!! patrick, who watched the inaugural in a training room at work, with a bunch of teary people. but when pastor rick warren said "sasha" and "malia" as if he were ru-paul, we laughed. wtf??!! - ---- Jerry Notaro wrote: > Huge Bettye Lavette fan here. It was a very interesting look into how one should read and what we get out of it. However, instead of demanding that a reader do this or do that, Woolf in essence says to open your mind and put down your prejudices beforehand. I think that could apply to anything artistic that you would approach--reading, music, artwork, etc etc. Often, I think, our own limitations get in the way of what we attempt. In a sense, the past, (past mistakes, past triumphs, and so on) is a barrier that one must break. This refers to anything, including reading! Sometimes we get into the habit of living our lives in reference to the past. As Woolf says, you go from one author to the next and if you don't open yourself up to the changes these authors bring from one to the next, you'll be missing the whole point. Anyway, I apologize as I was being a bit vague but it all applies. Thanks again. Great read. In a way, because of the straightforward approach (and the fact that it is an essay and such), this article reminded me of A Room Of One's Own. It would be a good leap for anyone who would be interested in reading A Room Of One's Own. - -Monika NR: To The Lighthouse- Virginia Woolf NP: Sin- Nine Inch Nails - --- On Sat, 1/17/09, Mark Scott wrote: For any who might be interested, here is a link to a short essay by Virginia Woolf on reading: http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2009/jan/17/virginia-woolf-reading-books It is a good, straightforward piece of writing. I decided to put everything in my life on hold for Tuesday & experience the inauguration celebration to the fullest. I have been quite solitary lately as my work has required a lot of research & writing. I think this has afforded me the luxury of some kind of openness & sensitivity to a collective consciousness (I don't have to deal with any personality issues- amazing how much emotional/spiritual space that can take up inside you) A few days ago I became aware of a very palatable build up- words are hard to find to express- something like an enormous sigh of relief, an opening of the heart on the most massive level, dare I say ever? There are many more people on earth than ever so it could be so. I think it is the energy of so many people thinking & feeling the same thing at the same time. We know how individuals can alter their brainwaves by their thoughts (& technology has tapped into that & is about to take a galactic leap forward because of it). So I think, in the wake of yesterday, I can say that some sort of seismic shift happened. I don't know quite what it is yet or what it means but that is the best way to describe what I feel which has no reference point at this time. A metaphor would be like the sword being pulled from the stone. It is not about the new president being a savior but rather something that is happening in all of us (just like he keeps saying!). Somehow he's been the conduit & I imagine in his private hours he's as amazed as the rest of us. I hope those who are less inclined to such 'cosmic' thoughts will understand that this doesn't mean that I believe there is any easy or quick fix to the astronomical amount of problems that we as a country & as a world have in front of us. But something definitely changed on a significant energy level & it will be interesting to see how things manifest. I saw a really interesting interview with Ken Burns (historian, documentarian) last night who sees America as just now growing into itself (we are still such a young country) & that from his perspective there have been three significant stages- Jefferson, Lincoln & now Obama. He sees this time as that significant. I got what he was saying & I know he felt the shift I am trying to put words to. Another friend of mine, someone in her 70's I think now, who has seen all the presidents take office as an adult from Eisenhower until now, said she had never ever seen anything like this before in her lifetime- that none of the other presidents even came close to this new president. I am so proud of, not only the citizens of this country, but the amazing support from so many citizens around the world. I have never in my life been so emotional and proud to say I am a citizen of the USA. Just writing this makes me super aware of this incredible electric energy that is still buzzing out there. Wow.
