[Patti Parlette Subject: A Hissing From The Other Side of The Planet Hello all my Joni-pals. Whilst the majority of this list are freezing their collective butts off, there is a whole half a planet down here in the grips of Summer. So, naturally, I have turned my attention to Joni's Summer themed songs. As with most things Joni sings about, her vivid descriptions of Summer bring melancholic visions of childhood memories of long, hot Summer days and current images of Summer. As an Australian, I always related well to phrases like :The hissing of Summer lawns" but I wonder if my antipodean views match with what Joni had in mind. I always assumed the "hissing" came from the sound of cicadas which are usually abundant around the Sydney area and I know, from watching documentaries that they are plentiful in the northeastern United States too. They make that hissing sound when they mate in the Summer months. Then I started to think that maybe Joni was singing about the sound of water sprinklers, watering the California lawns or maybe it was something else more esoteric. Crickets also make a hissing sound in the Summer too. It has been a mild Summer here so far, except for a couple of heatwave days last week and I haven't heard much from the cicadas this year. Then again, there aren't so many lawns in the city where I live now. The odd thing is, cicadas don't live in the grass. They live in trees. I know this is not exactly a life defining question but it just got me wondering. The sound of cicadas was a dominant feature of Summer for me as a child. The hotter it got, the louder the cicadas got. I grew up in a very middle class area of Sydney and there weren't the water restrictions we have these days so, every house had sprinklers going on their lawns too and they seem to make a hissing sound too. I do hope you all had a lovely new year. For those who follow the Chinese calendar, yours is still to come and for those who follow the Jewish calendar, it was several months ago. Happy new year to you all. This CD has to me been a kind of a born-again experience. And than I don't mean in a religious aspect, although that is certainly present. No, it's been a born-again-experience in that of owning an Album, a CD in playing it from start to end. Yes I admit it. I'm a wreck of our times. Almost all my music come trough my computer many times in quite random order. Now - Dragon Dreams - came to me as a gift - - from a friend - it's second hand ! And for the first time in quite a while I've really enjoyed an album from start to end, again and again and again and again. Issa's music should come with warning, it is very habitual, you want listen to it again and again. And I for one - don't get tired of it. So place your bids to Kate of the North now ! It will soon be too late ! And Jeannie you won't regret to check out Issa. It's a rewarding experience. I find. This is my review for CD Baby: dream of light author: Oddmund Kaarevik I already have this CD. I recieved it as a gift from a friend - second hand. But I just want to buy it again and again and give it to people I love and appreciate. What a CD. You had a good thing and you blew it ! Issa really takes the edge of everything with this masterpiece. It's just such a groovy piece and my favorites are changing with the light of the day. The best thing is: the feeling of it all as a great bonus. A gift Issa gives to us all from a endless creative well. This is just one of the best CD's I've heard and owned for ages. Hi Ken Hope you made it out the drive! My Diva Rider would insist that, prior to my tour, my hotel suite was completely knocked down and rebuilt in whatever colours, bathrooms and furniture I chose. I would insist on flying out my favourite builder (Mark in Olney, Bedfordshire, UK) to undertake the project in each and every hotel I deigned to stay in and grace with my presence. Later, when on the tour, I would then walk in to my suite, say I hated the colour and refuse to stay there. I would then kick and scream until I was sick. As my head hung over the toilet (following this extreme tantrum), I would insist that my tour manager (one Bob Muller) would pass me a copy of 'Freeing the Heart' Dhamma teachings from the Nuns' Community of Amaravati and Cittavieka Buddhist Monasteries and order him to read aloud page 82: 'We live in a society in which we're so used to being satisfied quickly, getting what we want, and being in control of things. But it doesn't work.' I would then probably throw up all over him and he would smile very patiently, recognise my struggle with my inner Diva, and pass me a Blue Moon on ice with an orange slice. I would be then feel some stirrings of contentment. Anita PS Bob, Will Young won the very first UK Pop Idol some years ago and did really did well when (remember this is very early on) he took issue with Simon Cowell calling his performance of 'Light My Fire' as average. Every one loved him from that point with his clever and polite challenge to La Cowell. He sounds a bit influenced (to my ears) by Jamiroquai and Jay Kay, and has produced some mean tunes himself. He has always cited Joni as an influence and I also hear has turned out to be quite a Diva as well. _____ I am using the Free version of SPAMfighter We are a community of 5.8 million users fighting spam. Right now we have temperatures below zero (Celsius) but at least light is slowly but surely returning to the Northern hemisphere. Hope you are enjoying your more agreeable temperature. It's interesting how we interpret Joni's lyrics depending on our own surroundings and experience. I have never heard cicadas but I imagine they are something like grasshoppers? I do associate grasshoppers with summer but not with the hissing of lawns since grasshoppers make a chirpy sound, to my ears anyway. I have always assumed that the hissing of summer lawns was caused by sprinklers. Or maybe snakes.I know it isn't very likely to find snakes lurking in Beverly Hills lawns but the relationship Joni describes in the song would be a nightmare to me, and in a nightmare, anything is possible. I was really surprised at how much I did enjoy the show and some of her singing. About 30% of the show was really quite good, besides the amazing production elements. She does have the over the top thing though that makes me wanna scream myself (but not necessarily in tune). It has been an incredible week of music and related events starting with that show with Celine and getting to hang with my good friend Zachary. Last night Freda and I went to the newly reopened Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts and caught Yolanda Adams with New Orleans own Irvin Mayfield. Freda has been working with Irvin on marketing team doing all his design and helping with Art Direction. Yolanda is blessed with some amazing chops. I worked with her once before with Wynton Marsalis on the Rebuilding The Soul of America concert with Stevie Wonder, Jill Scott (who blew my socks off) and host of others. I really love her voice but OMG when she goes over the top and does all the gymnastics she loses me. Julian finally had one of his dreams come true to meet Dave Matthews and the band day before yesterday. Dave is in town for two months recording his new record (to be released in April) and they used Preservation Hall as one of their foto locations. I spent the afternoon hanging out with them and had a blast. I took a bunch of pics but I think I will wait to post them later. They split from the Hall right around the time Julian was getting out of school and went out to City Park to finish up the foto shoot. Freda took Julian out there and met Clint and Ben from our band and Clint introduced him to Dave and then Dave introduced him to the rest of the band and suggested they take pictures (you can see these on my page). Julian was positively electric. Moms heart skipped a beat when she was asked by Carter if she was MOM and invited her in the pics as well. Having known most of these cats for a long time I knew how gracious and down to earth and truly nice people they are, but Freda and Julian know it too and were totally smitten. I topped off that day working at the Ogden Museum where I work on Thursday nights when I am not on the road. We had guitarist Ernie Vincent who was totally amazing. It was my third time mixing him and I had a blast. If you ever see something called the Ponderosa Stomp go see it. He was been a part of that collective for a long time. Basically they are an organization led by a crazy music slut who turned his appreciation for forgotten artists into a beautiful thing by promoting concerts etc. of these living legends. Check out their site and line up for the Jazz Fest Stomp at HOB at http://www.ponderosastomp.com/ . DMB spent about 5 hours in the morning thursday shooting fotos at the Ogden Museum Library. This is the site of the old Confederate Museum that the Ogden is hoping to restore and meld into their facility. The building is beautiful and photographer Danny Clinch (who has shot plenty of Tom Waits Hi Victor) loved the place and spent about 3 hours more shooting there than was scheduled. Danny shot Preservation Hall Jazz Band in NYC the last time we were there. He is superb and a hoot to work with. You can see those fotos as well on my page. I just got home from a wake, and feel compelled to share because of the music content there. My next-door neighbor Tom (51) was found dead on the frozen street late Monday morning. He had been jogging. They think it was a heart attack. He had seen his cardiologist just two weeks ago, and was running for his health. (Muller, right around Monday you wrote that you just got back from a great 5 mile run. What both sides now I felt. Thank God that your run was better than Tom's.) Tom was a Dead Head. You should hear our neighborhood on shiny hot nights. During the hissing of summer lawns, Joni and Dead music comes spilling out into the streets from the moon on the windowsills, and on the other side of my little ranch house on the hill is a Judy Collins nut. On both sides now, we have music, sweet music. We are the music lovers of the canyon. At the wake, there was Dead music playing. I met his brother from Oregon, wearing a long-sleeved Dead t-shirt. I exchanged a long hard hug with his 20 year-old son, similarly dressed, and the same with his 24 year-old daughter. Even his ex-wife. I commented on their shirts, and she said Tom would want it this way. Darn right. At that point I didn't feel so lame for having written out the lyrics to "Ripple" in the sympathy card. They will get it. And the part about the road....wow. These poor kids. I told them I would be there for them, always. They grew up with my kids. It takes a village, of course. As I left the funeral home w/ my other neighbor Anne and her husband and their two young boys (they look like my kids did when they were those kids age), I told them that I want my family to wear Joni Mitchell shirts and to play Joni at my wake. They all nodded and smiled and promised me they would make sure of it. Oh, and Anne? The other lady of the canyon, across the street? She's all Beatles. "Let there be songs to fill the air." I remember very hot days and nights when I was a kid hearing the cicadas whining, and when I first heard "The hissing of summer lawns," the thing that immediately came to mind was insects for some reason, although hot summer days when I was a kid always involved sprinklers AND bugs, so it's hard to separate the two.
