Hi Ken Hope you made it out the drive! My Diva Rider would insist that, prior to my tour, my hotel suite was completely knocked down and rebuilt in whatever colours, bathrooms and furniture I chose. I would insist on flying out my favourite builder (Mark in Olney, Bedfordshire, UK) to undertake the project in each and every hotel I deigned to stay in and grace with my presence. Later, when on the tour, I would then walk in to my suite, say I hated the colour and refuse to stay there. I would then kick and scream until I was sick. As my head hung over the toilet (following this extreme tantrum), I would insist that my tour manager (one Bob Muller) would pass me a copy of 'Freeing the Heart' Dhamma teachings from the Nuns' Community of Amaravati and Cittavieka Buddhist Monasteries and order him to read aloud page 82: 'We live in a society in which we're so used to being satisfied quickly, getting what we want, and being in control of things. But it doesn't work.' I would then probably throw up all over him and he would smile very patiently, recognise my struggle with my inner Diva, and pass me a Blue Moon on ice with an orange slice. I would be then feel some stirrings of contentment. Anita PS Bob, Will Young won the very first UK Pop Idol some years ago and did really did well when (remember this is very early on) he took issue with Simon Cowell calling his performance of 'Light My Fire' as average. Every one loved him from that point with his clever and polite challenge to La Cowell. He sounds a bit influenced (to my ears) by Jamiroquai and Jay Kay, and has produced some mean tunes himself. He has always cited Joni as an influence and I also hear has turned out to be quite a Diva as well. _____ I am using the Free version of SPAMfighter We are a community of 5.8 million users fighting spam. To the Lighthouse and Mrs. Dalloway each ended up on course lists twice during my undergrad years, and I just faked my way through them, which means I had no idea what I was reading each page. I had read Between the Acts before and didn't mind it, but those two just didn't click for me. But when I was doing my M.A., I took a seminar where we were assigned which works we would write and present on rather than choosing our own, and karma was a bitch that year as I wound up with both Dalloway and Lighthouse. Anyway, in the end, they finally clicked and I ended up loving them (Dalloway more than Lighthouse for some reason). However, it took YEARS to appreciate Woolf, and I am always suspicious of those people who go on and on about her (although maybe I just had issues with my fellow grad students who were all pretentious and annoying and who I don't think enjoyed a day of fun in their whole li ves). Oh, and if you ever want to drive yourself mental, try and read The Waves. Oh, how I wanted to get through it. Oh how I would love to someday get through one page. The edition I have has a really nice cover, but that's about all I can say for it. After the first three sentences, I'm ready for Helen Fielding.... Foiled by the evil Ticketmaster again!!!! I was both online (2 screens,hi-speed access) and on the phone at 8:55am today to get tix, refreshing the screens furiously 'til 9am arrived! Finally - tix for sale! So I typed at the fastest speed I could muster to fill in the preliminaries - and ALL - yes all, even $250 - tix sold out already!!! How in god's name could that happen!!! In a split second all seats - thousands - - sold?????? When an operator finally came on the phone connection at 9:11(!!!), I was told even the wheelchair seats were gone. And the limit was apparently 4 tix per person. Something VERY VERY FISHY here!!!! I live only 3 blocks away from the venue but the box office doesn't open 'til 11am, so long in-person lineups couldn't have been the problem. Needless to say I am furious, sad to the point of tears, and for the first time ready to pay a scalper for one measly ticket!!!!! The same thing happened when I tried to get Toronto and Montreal tickets last spring.... but I had attributed that to the switching packets of a foreign website (ignorant as I am I had to give myself some excuse to settle my nerves!). I had considered going to the UK to see him, and backed off. (Stupidly had the same lack of 'obeying my better impulses' with Silvio Rodriguez tix there in '06.) I found it claustrophobic and unendingly irritating.I found the characters so two dimensional, apart from the mentally ill young man - Septimus - then I fell in love with the way the words dropped around the scenes and lent the prose a stillness. there is one scene where she is stitching the silk of her dress for the evening "do" and the stitching turns into a wonderful seascape of waves of silk and she actually seems to enjoy herself for once. Woolf's outcomes always seem to be inevitable - characters seem destined in one way or another. there is no opportunity for choice - what I have read of her any way - but I do not choose to read her really... The writer's response to the times they live in and the social constructs around them, give such an air of time and space and I have found this so interesting when reading lyrics of songs and particularly poetry. Some of the older folk songs from the 1880s and from the pioneering of the American west have immense pointers to the times; whether they are love songs, work ballads, protests, or lyrical ballads of the countryside. I have often wondered how they compare across cultures. Did the indiginous tribes of America and Australia write about their changing scene. The aural tradition of story telling often gets ignored as the tales require the storyteller to recount and enthrall and the nuances get lost when written down. I am rambling here and really do not have enough time to explain my complex thoughts over words and meanings and the way they cling to consciousness - if you are exposed to them. I met someone once who hated music - all of it, no time for it at all, it jarred him to hear any sort of musical instrument. Had hated it from early childhood and had learned to tune out music when he heard it. But he could tell a story like noone else and had an almost photographic memory for poetry and whole tracts of books that he had loved. Fascinating person who could see rythms on pages that no one else could see. I did wonder about some form of synesthaesia with written words for him... Now granted I love hot weather which is unfortunate that I live in Ohio. Must be bad karma or something. I remember driving home from work on a summer night thinking, "oooh, it is a little chilly out tonight," and found out that the temperature was 67 degrees (F) if that tells you anything. However, this is just insane! My hands are ice right now just from typing to you folks. How is it where are you? How about you who (how envious I am) is currently in the midst of summer? Ridiculous here. __________________________________________________________________ Yahoo! Canada Toolbar: Search from anywhere on the web, and bookmark your favourite sites. I would phone/email the Attorney General's office for your state and report it exactly as you have here. Smells like a huge scam to me. TicketMaster have become entirely too big for their britches being, pretty much, the only game in town to get tickets to large events. There is a little upstart company that offers tickets to small venues like local theatre productions and the like called BrownPaperTickets and can be found at: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/ I like that they seem a bit less greedy with fees etc. and I can pick up tickets to events that TicketMaster doesn't feel are worth their time/effort. Check them out for events in your area. AUCTION? Last day) It looks like we don't have a lot of Issa fans on this list, or they've already got her CD, but anyway, the highest bid in when I sit down to check my email tomorrow morning will be mailed her new one in return for a donation to the jonimitchell.com website. High bid is $10, and there is only one so far. Anyone else interested in bidding? Last chance. It's a bit chilly, but nice weather for us because typically January is very rainy which makes it seem colder. Warm vibes to all you folks in "arctic" type zones below freezing. Donna >>> Catherine McKay 1/16/2009 1:20 PM >>> - -10 C or less, with windchill of -26C. Feckin' cold, in other words. There's a big power failure in the west end today, affecting some 100,000 people. It happened around 10 last night and they still haven't fixed it. Brrrr! The good news is, it's supposed to get warmer tomorrow, but there's still that wind chill factor, making it feel colder, but at least it will be in the single digits below zero. It hasn't driven any of them out of business but at least I'm not contributing to their profit base any more. Lucky for me, I don't crave going to "big" shows any more...give me the 40 Watt, the Grey Eagle, the Orange Peel, The Handlebar - all of which offer tickets easily and cheaply. Matter of fact, taking my son & his friend to see the Drive-By Truckers at the 40-Watt in Athens Ga tomorrow night. Should be killer.
