I just used G/C as an example but the shape on guitar looks like (bottom to top string) x35433 or x3543x. The other convenient voicing is xx10-12-12-10. Try playing one of those and sliding it around the neck and you'll have instant Steely Dan/Joni chord movement. Of course there's more to it than that but you'll see what I mean. Steely Dan differ from Joni in the funkiness and R&B basis for their grooves but harmonically and lyrically there are definite parallels. I think it would be great to hear you play those chords as you describe them (at a future JoniFest, perhaps). Specifically there is a chord structure called "major 9th no 3rd" but more frequently written as a "slash chord" such as G/C (which is a 2nd inversion G triad over a C bass). It is found throughout Joni's piano writing in almost every line and in many of her guitar tunes also; Fagen and Becker use it throughout their catalogue too ("Josie" has this chord form moving in parallel in several parts of the song). It may seem over technical but it is a strong flavor that is instantly recognizable. More than just this one chord though Joni and Steely Dan share a harmonic palette and a sense of how to transition between chords, sort of like Debussy and Ravel. If you are not a player it may be hard to grasp without someone playing these things for you; in that case you would likely say "oh that sounds just like...." Dave>> Thanks, Dave, for that wonderful in-depth explanation (which I don't really understand having never studied music) but which is still revelatory. Of course I've always loved both artists and always loved the chords they used. I can only describe it as "minor sounding chords" and am always drawn to it. There's also a melancholic sound that permeates the music I like, probably the "heart" Joni speaks about. In fact I don't like Circle Game because it sounds too major chord to me and I tire of it easily. (You can report me and kick me off the list if you want ; ) And what I refer to as "namby-pamby" music by artists like Dido, yuck! Give me Brandi Carlisle screaming her guts out any day! Other current-day artists I've been drawn to: New Radicals "You Get What You Give" (of course on Joni's Artist's Choice); Snow Patrol, "Shut Your Eyes" & "Chocolate"; "Phantom Limb" by the Shins. Same sort of "minor" sounds to me. And Beethoven's 7th& 8th symphonies which I adore . and then my pianist friend said, "Lindsay, that was a requiem written for his father's funeral." Yeah, and your point is? Soooo looking forward to Idol coming up Tuesday. It's so egregiously bad it's intoxicating! Talk to you later. I'm quite sure the email title "This email has seven days" is a play on the CBC news show "This Hour Has Seven Days" which ran from 1964-66. According to jonimitchell.com, Joni was on the show in 1966. http://jonimitchell.com/chronology/#1966 And there's a news-based comedy show on CBC now (has been on for years) called "This Hour has 22 Minutes." I don't think Joni has been on that, although she may have been mentioned once or twice. - --- On Fri, 1/9/09, Kate Johnson wrote: > From: Kate Johnson > Subject: Fwd: This Email has Seven Days - January 12 - 18 > To: "Joni people!" > Received: Friday, January 9, 2009, 1:45 PM > Joni's lyric used in newsletter... > > Kate > http://stubblejumperscafe.pnn.com > > > > > From the foundation that brought you the acclaimed > Historica > > Minutes and such sound bites as Take me to Fitzgibbon > and well > > take very good care of the bear comes the next > installment of an e- > > newsletter full of generally interesting and sometimes > useful > > tidbits about Canada. > > > > Historica brings you > > > > > > THIS EMAIL HAS SEVEN DAYS > > > > > > Monday, January 12 They took all the trees, put em > in a tree > > museum - In 1939 the Victoria Times quoted BC's > Chief Forester > > Ernest Manning as saying that the province's > forests were "being > > too rapidly depleted." Carly Simon said that they shut down 3 days before the release of her latest album This Kind Of Love in April and that the marketing was kind of botched because of it. But then James Taylor's Covers came out in September and did fine. Really well in fact. I've tried to look up any news articles on them shutting down but haven't been able to find anything. However, all is not lost. I was listening to WTFR today and could not help, yet again, be moved particularly by the first track. I would say Chinese Cafe is one of my favorite songs by Joni. It is in my top something or another favorite songs of hers. It is such a reflective, passionate, heartwrenching (without the full fledged attempt at being so) song. I love how she intertwines Unchained Melody at the end. I may almost call the song perfect. My favorite line from the song is one that is so simple yet so philosophical--"nothing lasts for long." That is now a line that comes into my head time and time again in my own experiences. It is something we all know deep down inside of us but yet could never really express or pinpoint ourselves and yet there Joni does it so effortlessly. Brilliant. Simply brilliant. - -Monika NR: Flush- Virginia Woolf ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 09 Jan 2009 20:20:46 -0500 From: "Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: Beatles collectable, njc I've been watching lots of TV lately. On "Antiques Road Show", they had a signed copy of a Beatles LP. The LP was shot and the cover was pretty rough. I thought it was going to be worth $500, tops. It turns out the owner was the son of an executive of Rickenbacker. On the Beatles' first trip to the US, they met with the Rickenbacker team. The executive delivered some guitars, brought along their new LP, and asked them to autograph it. It was the first time they had seen the US version of their LP, "Meet The Beatles", so they were kinda psyched. That means the executive's son owns the *first signed copy of "Meet The Beatles". Because the meeting's date was documented in several Beatle bios, the beat up cover is worth a lot. The appraiser urged the owner to type up the history with footnotes (a provenance), keep it with the cover, and insure it.
