I have no idea why this happens. You'd think that, by sending one to yourself, it would take just as long to get there as it would to get most other places because doesn't it have to go OUT to the internet (whatever the hell that really means) and then back to you. It (the internet, your ISP or whatever) shouldn't really be able to differentiate you sending an email to yourself from someone else sending one to you. Or maybe I'm wrong. Things that people send directly to other people usually seem to get there faster than things received via the jonilist, which kind of makes sense, even for individual posts. There are a few other listers whose emails I also get after someone else has already replied. I don't know how many gateways an email typically goes through to get from one place to another but I suppose it's possible that some go through more gateways than others and other gateways are more crowded than others, either all the time or sporadically. Anyway, I suppose it will remain a mystery for now. The spam always seems to get through though and sometimes it wedges itself between emails. I always check the list of incoming first and send the spam to spam so when I start reading emails, there should be no spam - and yet occasionally one just insinuates itself in despite my screening. - --- On Mon, 12/22/08, Randy Remote wrote: From: Randy Remote Subject: Re: Did anyone else miss these digests? njc To: joni@smoe.org Received: Monday, December 22, 2008, 3:45 PM >> I always seem to get Randy Remote's posts after someone else has already > responded.< > > Must be cuz he's livin off the grid up there in nocal > For whatever reason, my posts seem to take up to 24 hrs or more to appear, despite satellite hookup. As I was winding down the promotion for my Christmas album I had one more stop last night. I'd agreed to play a song I'd written with my friend Salman Ahmed, a Sufi Muslim from Pakistan. The song is called "Ring The Bells," and it's a call for peace and unity in our world. We were going to perform our song for the Muslim Public Affairs Council, a group of Muslim Americans that tries to raise awareness in this country, and the world, about the majority of good, loving, Muslims. I was honored, considering some in the Muslim religion consider singing to be against God, while other Muslim countries have harsh penalties, even death for homosexuals. I felt it was a very brave gesture for them to make. I received a call the day before to inform me of the keynote speaker that night... Pastor Rick Warren. I was stunned. My fight or flight instinct took over, should I cancel? Then a calm voice inside me said, "Are you really about peace or not?" I told my manager to reach out to Pastor Warren and say "In the spirit of unity I would like to talk to him." They gave him my phone number. On the day of the conference I received a call from Pastor Rick, and before I could say anything, he told me what a fan he was. He had most of my albums from the very first one. What? This didn't sound like a gay hater, much less a preacher. He explained in very thoughtful words that as a Christian he believed in equal rights for everyone. He believed every loving relationship should have equal protection. He struggled with proposition 8 because he didn't want to see marriage redefined as anything other than between a man and a woman. He said he regretted his choice of words in his video message to his congregation about proposition 8 when he mentioned pedophiles and those who commit incest. He said that in no way, is that how he thought about gays. He invited me to his church, I invited him to my home to meet my wife and kids. He told me of his wife's struggle with breast cancer just a year before mine. When we met later that night, he entered the room with open arms and an open heart. We agreed to build bridges to the future. Brothers and sisters the choice is ours now. We have the world's attention. We have the capability to create change, awesome change in this world, but before we change minds we must change hearts. Sure, there are plenty of hateful people who will always hold on to their bigotry like a child to a blanket. But there are also good people out there, Christian and otherwise that are beginning to listen. They don't hate us, they fear change. Maybe in our anger, as we consider marches and boycotts, perhaps we can consider stretching out our hands. Maybe instead of marching on his church, we can show up en mass and volunteer for one of the many organizations affiliated with his church that work for HIV/AIDS causes all around the world. Maybe if they get to know us, they wont fear us. I know, call me a dreamer, but I feel a new era is upon us. I will be attending the inauguration with my family, and with hope in my heart. I know we are headed in the direction of marriage equality and equal protection for all families. Happy Holidays my friends and a Happy New Year to you. Peace on earth, goodwill toward all men and women... and everyone in- between. On Dec 22, 2008, at 2:47 PM, Kate Bennett wrote: > I guess being raised fundy would make him seem pretty mild. In my more philosophical moments I think, well it certainly got the dialogue going! Hi Kate, Maybe dialogue was part of Obama's motivation for choosing Warren. When people get all walled up in their beliefs and don't openly dialogue, hate builds and change doesn't happen. I think it is a good move on Obama's part because it will catch the eye of the Christian Right and maybe let them who have ears hear. Prejudice can be dissolved when fear leaves. If Warren is not afraid to be part of Obama's inauguration, others might follow. Yet, I also think that the voices raised in protest to this decision were part of the process that was necessary. I'd be happier if either no religion or all religions were included in this celebration. Right now from what I can tell only Christianity has been indcluded. As far as the dialogue, I've discovered many who do not understand the difference between the current legality of marriage vs civil union. I guess I'm a bit surprised there would be such a religious tone to it, but, if there needs to be, then I think it should represent more than christians, especially these days when it's definitely more than christians. When our PM is sworn in, it's not that big of a deal. It's a little ceremony that is probably only shown on the Parliamentary Channel with a bit shown on the evening news after the fact. For oaths, we have a choice of "swearing" with a "so help me God" at the end or else "declaring" and leaving god out of it. However, when we make oaths of allegiance, we get to say we'll be faithful to Her Majesty, QEII, which is also a bit bizarre and something I forget about altogether until the situation happens to come up, at which time I think of people being drawn and quartered for treason, for some reason. http://www.gg.ca/media/fs-fd/P3_e.asp ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Dec 2008 14:33:08 -0500 From: Russell Bowden Subject: You're right NJC LG, The second I hit the send key I realized that I hadn't deleted the whole thing...a thousand apologies to all for sending the digest back...Thanks to Bob M for his gentle chastisement. For those that don't know, this is lyrics of Woody Guthrie that Jonatha set to music. Things that make this Joni-enough that I haven't marked this post njc: - - Joni takes inspiration from Dylan who takes inspiration from Guthrie. It's a grand tradition. - - Like Joni, Jonatha frequently uses alternate tunings in her music and those weird minor chords. - - Like Joni, as far as I can tell, Jonatha has the respect of other musicians and a devoted fan-base, but is probably unknown on mainstream radio (strangely enough, I did hear a Muzak-type rendition of one of her songs a while back when i was shopping for groceries and was shocked, in a good way.) Reasons why this album just could be a major tearjerker: - - It's made with love, love and more love - - Reading the loving words of Woody Guthrie in songs to his wife, family and others, some sweet, some sexy, some sweet and sexy evokes a feeling of such nostalgia that you're bound to get tears in your eyes, or at least a lump in the throat for at least one song. It is such a tribute and sheds a whole new light on a singer-songwriter who is long gone. "Madonna on the Curb" is a song about homelessness. The lyrics were written in 1939. Plus ca change... From the opening words of "Sweetest Angel," which could be for a lover or a child, I felt a lump in my throat. Here are the opening lines: "Every night about eight o'clock I wind the stem of my little clock And when I look in the crystal glass I see a lot of faces pass Of those I knew And those I know And you now coming And you to go "Here's a word I'd like to whisper And I'd like to have you listen "All this world is made of love You are fresh from heaven above You're the sweetest angel in this world" And here's another lyric that just about ripped my heart out, from "My Battle", apparently written when Woody was dying: "And I will never dread the day I will die 'Cause my sunset is somebody's morning sky." Not only is this a tearjerker - but in a bittersweet kind of way that makes you appreciate your loved ones more - but I think this is the best album I've heard in a long, long time. Jonatha definitely deserves kudos - at least one kudo ;-) - for this. Please give it a listen but, more than that, buy it and support good music! You can read the lyrics and hear clips of the music at Jonatha's website: http://www.jonathabrooke.com/music/the-works/?url=music/the-works __________________________________________________________________ Be smarter than spam. Only yesterday Rev. Warren removed from his website the stuff about no gays being allowed in his church unless they repent their sin (of gayness). I'm sorry, this smacks of hypocricy. Now that he's getting national publicity, and an embarrassment to the Pres-elect, he's quietly pulling his anti-gay rhetoric off the web? Okay to schmooze with queers if they are celebrities? What a load of crap. This creep should not be included. Religion should not be included. Separation of church and state. If people want to pray about it, they can do it at home. The sad reality is that here in America, although you can become president if you are black, you cannot become president if you are not Christian. Noam Chomsky may be right in calling the US one of the most fundamentalist countries on earth. Reaching across the aisle? Where does that end? Catherine, you must know the U.S. is one of the most prudish, dysfunctional places on earth. Yes, of course. The U.S. is a nation of many, many religions and other spiritual beliefs, and it includes many who do not believe, as well. WHICH IS AS IT WAS INTENDED TO BE, regardless that the Christians insist that the U.S. is "their" country. Bah. I'd better not get further into this; it's already making me angry. And in fact I saw somewhere today that Warren is preaching at Ebeneezer Baptist Church on January 19th - MLK's church on MLK Day. Can we allow ourselves to feel prosperity? The radical right is dead as a political force, the right has to now move to us? We won. Damn I have no use whatsoever for Warren's theology and as a clergy person I have dealt with his bullshit for years - but what are we advocating how that olive branches are being offered on all sides - can we accept it? And I think if anyone wants to commit acts of violence, do against the organizations that opposed Prop 8, who ran the worst run campaign ever by a bunch of smug people who just assumed that they would win. Maybe Californians should occupy their selves and go recall another governor and keep their selves busy and stop assuming that their state battles are the crucible by which everything else is measured.
