Some generous soul has uploaded the entire Red Rocks concert (1983). Some nice intros from Joni, too - after CA, we've to imagine Edith and her kingpin in the Cotton Avenue club... Like Monika, I'd rank DJRD (the song) as one of Joni's best ever - wonderfully intelligent, vivid imagery, and sooo sexy! And her guitar playing on that whole album is superb. (I do wish she'd kept the guitars on Dreamland, tho...) A very great album. Season's greetings to you all. 'Here in glasgow, it's pouring rain...' It is an extremely disturbing choice for the invocation, and, I think I can say pretty conclusively that the majority of the LGBT American community is appalled. While Joni never made a movie of it she did render a painting which includes Cotton Avenue. It is called Axilar Moonrise and can be found as painting number 99 in the painter section of JoniMitchell.com. There is also an interview with Joni included which explains the painting and its relationship to the album and the song. That painting is also on the back cover of the Mendel Gallery book. I loved how the movie (Alpha Dog) listed all the names, dates, and times of all the witnesses (who all did nothing) - but beyond that, take the brother of the victim- had he not screamed at Truelove and so violently threatened him, Truelove would not have hung up on him and after all truelove called to look for a way out - if the mother of the one girl had listened to her daughter rather than say, 'hey, Mom's having sex now, why are you so selfish as to disturb me' - if the parents of the kid had not smothered with over protective hovering and their own screaming so he would have felt he could talk to them - it just goes on an on and on, and every parent blaming every other parent rather than taking the slightest bit of responsibility - and it is was all so plausible how sex, and drugs and drinking and going along and thinking everything was cool can just blind judgment as well as anger did and how no one listened (including the lawyer who should have understood the situation and not just given unthinking advice) - and the kicker of course being that the story is true - that a kid really died because of this - and all the lives ruined - the purpose of being the adult friend or relative of a kid is to talk to them about reality, to discuss the things that one cannot discuss with mom and dad and damn that is one well crafted well acted movie, Ben Foster and Justin Timberlake and Emile Hirsch and Anton Yelchin were brilliant, the absolute plausibility, that is how kids actually are and speak and think and act, the fact that you can step by step see what was going on and if one person - including the kid - had looked at reality rather than the drama and the party - the "I am a whiny bitch and you Frankie have it under control" scene - and how of us are Sharon Stone driving our kids away in the guise of "love" and Bruce Willis knowing and yet excusing ("You wanna know what this is all about? You can say it's about drugs or guns or disaffected youth, or whatever you like. But this whole thing is about parenting. It's about taking care of your children. You take care of yours, I take care of mine."), the oner person with a conscience ("Am I the only fucking person who thinks this is fucking wrong? ") who gets dismissed by her mother ("I get one night to fuck my boyfriend and you interrupt me, it can wait") Nick Cassavetes is a hell of a director, this is one of the better movies I have ever seen, certainly one of the most engrossing Vince On Fri, Dec 19, 2008 at 12:41 AM, Kate Bennett wrote: > Vince, that is a very good conversation to have had with Gabe. Truelove character's name was Jesse James Hollywood & his dad (Willis's character) was a drug dealer- don't know if that was in the movie. Guess I'll have to watch the whole thing start to finish now. Big controversy here because the movie was going to be released prior to the trial of JJH. Kate ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Dec 2008 21:01:43 -0500 From: Vince Subject: Re: alpah dog njc Thanks for the link! No one could make up a real name like Jesse James Hollywood - the movie names are rather fanciful but the real life counterparts are even more wacky. I thought one of the comments on your link eprfessed it perfectly: "The Supreme Court denied cert and the issue of Zonen's participation has been decided. It's time Hollywood finally got his just desserts, something he has evaded far too long, first by fleeing to Brazil for five years and then several more years of delay through the efforts of his lawyer. Yes, he is legally entitled to pursue every available procedural motion but even he hasn't had the nerve to proclaim the scumbag's innocence - hardly surprising in view of the overwhelming evidence of his client's direction and involvement in this heinous kidnapping and murder of an innocent young kid." The use of the prosecutor's notes is troubling - but does this trial (and it should have a change of venue) depend on that? There are four guys serving time and a host of witnesses who can testify to a jury that has never seen the movie or heard of the case. And that is what I am sure Jesse James Hollywood's lawyers do not want to happen. Please keep me posted - this s just such an incredible story - and perhaps one of the great morality plays of all time. I was able to drive into work today. I took a short lunch so I could leave early and got up to the hospital after work. Travis is uncomfortable and bored. Part of my depression yesterday was due to the fact that he didn't want to talk on the phone much. I think I understand a little better why that was now. Anyway, I'm feeling much better tonight although another snow storm, this time with high winds, is supposed to hit here tomorrow night. Travis did call me a little while ago to tell me they had moved him out of the ICU. But the doctor that came in while I was down there this evening said he would probably be in the hospital for another week. Apparently patients with head trauma can seem to do well for up to a week after their injury and then suddenly have things go terribly wrong. In that sense, I'm glad they're keeping him. Thank you all again for the kind outpouring I have received. I owe some more individual responses after today and I promise I will get back to all of you who were so kind to write to me.
