Because I was living on the paprika plains of far northwest North Dakota, just over the line from Saskatchewan, at the time of DJRD's release, "Cotton Avenue" always reminds me of the one "big city" we could most easily reach: Regina. That will always be my special "no place special." It is reintroduced later in the film too. The director in the commentary says that they used the song while rehearsing the more intimate scenes and he thought it suitable as the opener to the film. Its a film I had been wanting to see for a while and which I ordered just over a week ago from HMV. Hearing Joni as it started was a bonus I did not expect!! It really excited me. I remember the Joni mention in Into the Wild too. Another good movie in my opinion. I also love Hejira and DJRD although when I first heard them both I was furious with Joni and wanted a tune! I made myself listen to them and got into them so much that they became my favourite albums and still are. At the time though much as I got to love them I remember breathing a sigh of big relief when I heard her singing Unchained Melody at the end of Chinese Cafe. I had somewhere still been waiting for some melody...some Mitchell melody. They were fine times. Waiting for an album. Massive disappointment on initial hearing. Multiple forced listenings to them and learning every word even though I could not comprehend what she was doing or where she had gone but willing to go with her and thank God I did because those are the albums I like the most. I do love it when she sings a tune though and the Tribute version of Both Sides Now which I caught on You Tube blows me away completely. Melody or not though she sings it like she feels it and it gets into your marrow doesnt it. She is the best! ------------------------------> > > > "I could drink a case of you and still be on my> feet." ------------------------------> > End of JMDL Digest V2008 #325> *****************************> > -------> Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org> Unsubscribe by clicking here:> mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe> ------- _________________________________________________________________ Are you a PC? And if so, what did you think? I was so hyped up for this movie and walked out of it feeling completely tortured. The critics loved it I guess, but not me. Go figure, since one of my favorite movies by the same guy is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Mia _________________________________________________________________ You live life online. THe Seinfeld episode was funny too, and did poke fun at pretentiousness quite well. ANyone see Alpha Dog or Green Street Hooligans? I really reallylike them (which is a sad statement about me I guess) and my grandson just watched both and loved them too. A few years ago Joseph in Manilla/Chapel Hill turned me on to the wonderful Rabbit Proof Fence - when the critics ripped into the new film Australia and said that Rabbit Proof Fence handled the one topic far, far better, I felt so cultured because of what I learned from Joseph in M/CH! Joseph will surely disown me though for my love of Alpha Dog and Green Street Hooligans.
