I have my own problems with those included and excluded, and I dismiss the ranking outright. I see lists of this nature as instructive to those who seek advice for things to which one may experience and listen. I'd expect the majority of RS readers today have not experienced even half of those singers on the list. Education is a good thing. My personal disappointments are no Emmylou Harris, no Laura Nyro, no Judy Garland, the inclusion of Maria Cary, Joni wasn't #1, even though I can't argue with Artetha Franklin in that spot, that all the Beachboys weren't included with Brian Wilson, that Paul Simon wasn't with Arty, and the inclusion of Axl Rose and Curt Cobain the Ren and Stimpy of rock 'n' roll. As the lights flashed for part 2, people began to file back slowly totheir seats.I seized a split-second moment of opportunity to introduce myself to Joni, sayhello, and shake her small and gentle hand. She smiled and we chatted brieflyabout the new pieces. She has beautiful blue eyes. A far too short, but happyJoni moment for me, at long last. _________________________________________________________________ Send e-mail anywhere. I have forwarded your post on to Jack's mom, who was over to the house for Thanksgiving Dinner part 3 last sunday night. I found a song of Jack's that he recorded on a four track called "The Emperor" and played it for her for the first time. The recording is not that great but I think I can improve the quality in Pro Tools and get it out there along with some other unreleased songs of his. I really like Odetta and the raw power of her voice. Was watching Bob Dylan's "Don't Look Back" recently and thought I'd give Odetta a listen. Then I heard this news. Despite her rather condescending remarks to Diamanda Galas (that DG cannot sing the blues), Odetta is as authentic an artist as Joni. So many recent deaths of beloved women artists. First Yma Sumac, then Miriam Makeba, now Odetta. These ladies would have made a great trio, now that I think of it. The man can't sing. > Never has been able to. Never will be able to. > Yes, I read the latest issue of RS and had similar thoughts. However, it isn't just a person's voice that makes them a singer, but what they DO with that voice that counts. I mean, Joe Cocker and Tom Waits are also on the list and both have questionable voices in a technical sense. Still, I LOVE Cocker's "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" album and I own several Waits albums. Even Neil Young, on the list at #57, has a voice that puts many people off. I was once asked to go to a Neil Young concert with a friend who was also a fan; he said, "Let's go howl along with Neil." Yet, I own all his albums and love his work. All that being said, I wonder if some of the legends that have made it in the past would still be able to find an audience today if they were just starting out. Of course, we all think Joni should have placed higher on the list but remember there are people on this very JMDL that admit to not liking her earlier helium-era voice. Now, how about all the people who were omitted from the list? I think Stephen Stills was/is a great singer, especially when sober, and should have been in there. And what about David Crosby? I think his is the strongest voice of the CSN trio even today. I've seen him live recently with CPR and was quite impressed with his vocals. In that case, in my opinion, Dylan would not fit into either category. I am not swayed by my original statement. In my mind, Bob Dylan is part of a list of "singers" who simply do what they have to--the bare minimum in a way...basically they just get the job done because it needs to be done. I'd put Dylan, Clapton, Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan on such a list. I am a fan of all four artists so I'm not trying to put them down (I even saw Clapton in concert). There are more I could list (that I even like) but those were the first three to come to my mind. Plus, the fact that musicians/performers themselves picked the singers sort of lay more claim to my suspicion that those performers who chose them, simply picked people they liked and/or admired (or are legendary). There is nothing really wrong with that but it takes away from compiling an honest list. You know what I mean? Now I think Joni is technically a good singer yet at the same time, her vocals are unique. That is what makes someone not only good but one of the best. There are those singers who are "technically" good but are simply boring. Do you understand what I mean by that? - -Monika ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2008 #311 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe -------
