Mark in Sydney ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Dec 2008 04:10:55 -0800 (PST) From: Bob Muller Subject: Joni Covers, Volume 107 - Comin' on Christmas... Well, it's just about time to say so long to another year (and to a president but I won't go there) and usher in a new one, but before we do that it's time for the holiday madness to crank up full swing and to help with stress relief I offer up another CD's worth of Joni covers, #107 in the never-ending series inspired by the finest songwriter of our times. This one I must say is CHOCK FULL of goodies, and I hope you agree. The majority of these are from 2007 so the overall sound is very much up to date. Thanks to Mark for his help. Here's where you'll find the link to download it: http://tinyurl.com/688nga And when you flip open the tresure chest lid, here are the goodies you'll find inside: 1. Dre Pallemaerts - I Had A King: The song on Joni's first album is also going to kick off this one, and it does so in grand style. A jazz drummer from Belgium, the drums are more in the background though quite steady and noticeable as he surrenders the leads to flugelhorn, electric piano, both of whom explore the nuances of this beautiful melody. 2. Rosana Eckert with Terry Haskins - Both Sides Now: It's easy to dismiss BSN covers or roll your eyes at them, but it's tracks like this that remind you of its beauty, of its sublime combination of simplicity & complexity. Rosana's voice is pure and pretty, and Terry's guitar work is tasteful and equally nice. 3. Exit 9 - Big Yellow Taxi: A little heavier and more plugged-in than usual, and some thumpy drums to boot - other than that it's not a terribly original take on BYT. These guys hail from Columbia SC, aka the HOTTEST city on Earth. 4. Zoom - River: I love the vibes, and there are definitely good vibes all over this vibraphone-lead instrumental version of River, with some fine organ and percussion backup as well. 5. Dave Browne - A Case Of You: Dublin's Dave Browne offers up a lovely live version of this one, inspired by the now-classic Diana Krall cover and at times sounding like Peter Gabriel. The vocal is backed up by a full orchestral sound, as well as some harmonies and duet work that work nicely to conjure up a memory of the person he is singing about. Totally works for me. 6. Paul Booth Quintet - Both Sides Now: A lovely and very accessible jazz/instrumental version, with the sax carrying the melodic chores and also venturing out into some enjoyable solo activity. A fine arrangement and a nice blending of the various sounds on this one gives the franchise a nice fresh sound. 7. Ren Takada - California (Live): We've had a studio take of this one on an earlier volume, Japanese Pedal Steel guitarist Takada also has released it on a live album and it's worth hearing again in this original arrangement and execution. 8. Liley - River: Don't know much about her, but I like her voice and the guitar is equally fine. 9. Okkervil River - Blonde In The Bleachers: Austin, TX indie-rockers Okkervil River put this out as a free download on their website last year, and it has just recently been issued on a charity album. This one is a little hard to listen to at first, but is a grower and rewards repeat listens, and of course they get bonus points for tackling a deep, deep catalog track. 10. Parker High School Swingin' Broncs Pep Band - Both Sides Now: Now this one should bring back some high school memories for those of us who were in high school back in the 70's and the band would perform in the gym at assemblys and pep rallies. Sure, it's cheesy but it's such a nice slice of Americana that I can't help but totally dig it. 11. Climate Control - The Hissing Of Summer Lawns: Ah, I do love the HOSL covers, and this one is nice, plays it straight up and almost mirrors Joni's version with the exception of some guitar licks at the very end. This one comes from their album of "weather" songs. 12. Angus Stone - River: Now HERE is an original interpretation, Angus' bouncy, loping fingerpicking coupled with his emotionally spot-on whispery voice - unlike any other River cover I've ever heard. Amazingly effective, it stops me cold every time in its sheer beauty and originality. Comes from a compilation called "No Man's Woman" in which men cover songs written by women. 13. Eddie Nuenning & Lara Schallenberg - Urge For Going: Lara's wispy yet strong voice works very well on this traditional arrangement of one of Joni's finest songs. She's not afraid to add some individual touches to it vocally. Nice guitar work as well. 14. Valli McGavin Orchestra - Both Sides Now: A tasty little nibble of instrumental cheese for your listening pleasure. 15. Julie Christensen and Stone Cupid - Woodstock: I love this one, it offers up some a nice musical contrast between some smooth electric piano and some gruff electric guitar and build nicely as the song progresses. Through it all, Julie's voice proves to be the anchoring force, and she offers up a bit of Joan Osborne-style bits as well. 16. Misty Boyce - River: Play Misty for me - that is, play Misty's cover of River for me. Very stripped down, very melancholy and aching, which obviously works well in the context of the song. I also like the way she takes a few adventurous turns melodically, both vocally and with the piano. A Tori-ish arrangement. 17. Charly Records Studio Group - Big Yellow Taxi: Pretty much a cover of the Amy Grant version, which is what they intended. 18. Norman Yemm - Both Sides Now: This one is definitely NOT from the 21st century - it's from 1974. Norman, an Australian actor best known as one of the stars of "The Sullivans" is another actor who put out an album of pop songs and just had to have a go at the franchise. And that brings us to the end of another collection of Joni covers, and another year of monthly additions to the Joni covers legacy. You can bet that 2009 will pick up where 2008 left off though...except, that is, for that president thing. Thanks to those of you who support the project and to those of you have been along for the ride since day one and haven't hollered "UNCLE" yet. What is various peoples opinions of it? Hi James, This CD is delightful! Tracks that stand out on it to me are Court and Spark sung by Norah Jones, Edith and the Kingpin sung by Tina Turner, Tea Leaf Prophecy sung by Joni, and the Jungle Line interpreted by Leonard Cohen. It is all captivating and moving because of Herbie's piano playing. If you can wait until Christmas, it would be a very good gift! But, this album is best for the listeners who can also take a relaxing back seat to the music, taking in some deep breaths thus relieving the tensions of the day, and then focusing and falling into nothing else but the beauty and power of these exquisite compositions, each piece, so unique. I thought I would copy the music from the ballet for them in advance, because they are more likely to enjoy the show if they are familiar with the songs. I think it is the songs on Shine that are included. Am I right? I know that Beat of Black Wings is there as is Three Great Stimulants. Maybe someone with a program can fill in the blanks. I scanned the library but didn't see anything right off. The songs from that presentation were: "Fiddle and the Drum," "Sex kills," "Passion Play," "The Three Great Stimulants," "For the Roses" (Travelogue version), "Slouching towards Bethlehem," "The Beat of Black Wings," "If I had a heart, I'd cry," "If," "Big Yellow Taxi" (Shine version.) However, I understand that more songs/dances (four?) were added afterwards. So there's a good cross-section of old and new.
