Great idea. I have been contemplating inviting a special guest(s). I'm trying to be bold. I just can't think of an appropriate Australian who would be known to everyone. You sprung one of my surprises. I had been considering Olivia Newton-John. It wouldn't be much of a hike for her but I'm not sure if she is a Joni fan never having heard her sing one of her songs. I was once invited to June Bronhill's apartment by a mutual friend and had a wonderful casual evening in her gorgeous penthouse. She was very close friends with Joan Sutherland and told me some of the jibes they give each other (which I won't mention here due to good taste). From June's description, Joan seems to have a healthy sense of humour and is pretty down to earth for a diva. I would consider inviting Joan if I had any clue that she likes Joni. Four children, the first named Lesley, the second Ian - no similarity there. But then along comes Alan, and finally me, Helen. Ian, Alan and Helen. And if my sister had been a boy, she'd have been William. Oh, and my mother's sister's name is Helen too. Creativity was NOT their strong point when in came to naming their kids! I myself am avoiding the fact that I'm hosting this shindig and sitting on the computer doing things like this. Ahem. My 12-year-old son Dennis has become a very proficient guitar player, mostly self-taught off guitar books and tabs online, and is interested in Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, Metallica, etc. at this point (gets encouragement from my husband in this of course). Dave Blackburn tells me he'll grow out of it (so what's my husband's problem??). So yesteday while puttering around, I noticed a book by his backpack called "Slash." Yes, the autobiography of the guitarist from Guns N Roses. So I pick it up to see what debauchery my innocent little son is reading, and this is what is in the first chapter: (Slash was born in England. His dad is British named Tony Hudson and his mom, Ola, is African American. He moved to Los Angeles when he was about 5) "My mother continued her work as a fashion designer while my father parlayed his natural artistic talent into graphic design. My mom had connections in the music industry so her husband was soon designing album covers. We lived off Laurel Canyon Boulevard in a very sixties community up at the top of Lookout Mountain Road (Joni alarm is sounding). That area of Los Angeles has always been a creative haven because of the bohemian nature of the landscape.. Joni Mitchell lived a few houses down from us . my mom designed Joni's clothes while my dad designed her album covers." "I saw many of Joni Mitchell's recording and rehearsal sessions . " And after I rummage around in my albums, I find Anthony Hudson's name as art designer on Court & Spark. Interesting! Les, can you get an interview with Slash and see what he remembers about her??? (Oh, yeah, and can Dennis get his autograph? ; ) Of course I'm giving Dennis endless grief about this because Joni to him represents the antithesis of the heavy metal he now loves. So I needle him with interviews with Robert Plant saying he's enamored of Joni, show him pictures of Joni and Eric Clapton, and now Slash who grew up down the street from her. Hahaha. One of these days, it will hit him like a lightning bolt. The other night at a local football game, he saw the back of a guy's t-shirt that was for a Neil Young concert tour. He said, "Who's Neil Young?" I said a few things about him and punctuated it by poking him in the arm on each word: and he's a big friend of Joni Mitchell. My evilness knows no bounds.
