Love Bene (its an order!) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Nov 2008 04:42:12 -0500 From: "Mark Angelo" Subject: SJC: Boy Meets Girl Mid 80's music I was up last night and I had a tune playing in mind...just appeared...from long ago. Anyhow the group - Boy Meets Girl - never was much of a commercial success (often a good indicator) - consisting of two singer/songwriters who found most of their success in writing for other well-known artists, although their own albums deserved more attention. I read up some on their web site and It appears they were married, had a daughter, and are now divorced but remain close friends and still collaborate composing together. The music definitely falls into the "pop" category - however - it blows away all the music glamorizing and glorifying the culture of the slums that has for so long dominated music charts IMHO. For those of you ready to dismiss them as one-hit pop wonders, interestingly Shannon says about her "....first song: one night long ago, on a houseboat in seattle, i dreamed a perfect hippie dream that joni mitchell (my heroine at the time) was sitting on a large rock singing a song to the whole outdoors...i thought "i like that song, it's so beautiful". when i woke up i realized i'd never heard it before, hey, because i wrote it! i was the writer this time....and thus began my writing of song." This video is very uplifting - a nice change from the morose angst-filled music I usually resonate with (okay at least I'm honest about it) with the exception that I sometimes listen to some Christian music as I find much talent in that genre, as well as music that is not mainstream and has a je ne sais quoi - hopeful, uplifting, quality about it - very unlike the sanctimonious, self-serving, lost-in-translation mixture of myths and purported history which comprise the texts of the religion itself. The imagery of these two free-spirited souls who are clearly very much in love with the Southern California sunlight streaming in on them with in an era that seems in retrospect to be more innocent, and hopeful makes me smile. Singer songwriter plus genre NJC Hey Ems and everyone Not mad - I am not a purist that is all. JB is someone I respect for her deeply folk steeped soul. She was initially a folk ballad singer and brought so many wonderful songs to the fore at a time when rock and roll and anything electric was the new order. She held her own and managed to cross over into the presence of the emerging and shifting millieu of a "popular music" that was feeding a dissatisfied post WW2 generation, hungry for change. So many of the "new" singers in the 50's and 60's were developing from folk but would deny their roots - JB never did that. Her passion for the underdog, for the "decamisados", for injustice has always struck a chord with me. I also think she used her folk roots as both an anchor and a motif for her authenticity. There is a film - cannot remember which one - but its a documentary about Bob D - and she is there and it is clear she is both way up there in the top circles of the movers and shakers, but also clearly not OF them.. Every now and again she starts singing something folky with her penetrating vibrato and Mr Dylan gets annoyed - the documentary is about HIM...I have not seen this for years and years so I could be wrong, but I think not. If I am to list my late 60's early 70's top albums they would include - but not in any order Tapestry - Carole King Sweet Baby James - JT Blue - JM Candles in the Rain - Melanie Liege and Lief - Fairport Convention After the Gold Rush - Neil Young Tumbelweed Connection - Elton John Medal - Pink Floyd Deja Vu - CSNY Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath Split - Ground hogs An album by FAMILY There you go... broad mix but hey - my ears are far apart!!!
