I get carried away reminiscing. Hi David, I LOVED your reminiscing. You wrote so beautifully, so descriptively and clearly. I don't remember the last time I read a post the length of yours and didn't notice it was long and fall off before getting to the end. Your college scene sounded wonderful in the day! I went to a small and colorful college at the foot hills of the Ozark Mountains. It since has added buildings and walk ways and parking lots where there used to be trees to sit under. We had a whole forest that has recently been cut down and is nothing but dirt waiting to become a "village" that will belong to the city. The area has grown into one of those typical corners you find off of highways... a Super Walmart, Wendys, Burger King, Cracker Barrel, etc. They tore down the lemonade shop that we used to walk to and put up uninteresting businesses. I've sent you a few messages before off-line, but I thought I had better send this to the list, in case some other people also want to join in the discussion. As you know, I have confirmed to you that I am interested in joining the Ozfest, as I have also confirmed the same to Dave regarding the SoCal fest.B But the first thing I wanted to say, is: I really think it is too early to get people to make any serious decisions, however much I understand your reasons for wanting some early indications.B But with another Jonifest to join up for first, and all the economic uncertainties of the moment, how can any such indication be more than just an expression of "I wish..."?B I think lots of people just can't get their head around it in any realistic way, at the moment.B This must be frustrating for you, but I really hope you won't lose hope , and hang in there!B Are you under much pressure from the people at your end (owners of the venue etc) to work this all out so early, or can they give you some more leeway? Second thing is: I think you will need to continue giving out information about the Ozfest via this list, that is the only way you can reachB new potential participants.B Maybe I am the most computer illiterate of us all, but maybe not, and I must say that I joined up to your yahoo group but I don't really know how to get back to it, and to be honest I don't have the time to keep going back to it, unless I keep getting emails telling me what to do.B So all I am trying to say is: do keep giving out information on this list to get new people interested, and then, when they express an interest, they can join the yahoo groupB to discuss more practicalB details, but please can that yahoo group also work like this list and send out emails to people?B (If this is how it DOES work, maybe I missed something, could you let me know how to hook up again?) Sorry if I am the only one who is confused, but I thought this might help if anyone else was in the same state of confusion! Good luck and best wishes, Lieve. - ------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Nov 2008 20:20:22 +1100 From: Mark-Leon Thorne Subject: I had not considered that it might be in any way inappropriate toB post updates to this list on OzFest. I hope it's not a problem. I'dB like to keep it to the Yahoo group but I just haven't had much of aB response there. In no way do I want to compete with Dave and theB SoCal JoniFest. That is of course coming up first and we shouldB concentrate on making that a success. Dave has put so much work intoB it and it looks amazing so, if I can't make it, I wish you all a lotB of fun there in Idyllwild. I had such a positive response from everyone when I first raised theB idea of OzFest but the enthusiasm seems to have died down a bit. IB really need all those who are interested in coming to OzFest to joinB the Yahoo group. So far, there are only 12 members and if that's anB indication to how many will be attending, I can't continue it becauseB it would be far too expensive for only 12 people. The price I quotedB is based on 30 people so, we need that many or more. If there areB over 30 people, the price will come down even more. One of the main reasons that I need people to join the Yahoo group isB the database. Although I'm not asking for deposits yet, I need to getB an idea of how many people will come. I know that it is still a longB way off but unless I get an idea of how many people (even a vagueB idea) I can't continue the organising. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Nov 2008 11:58:13 -0500 From: Marianne Rizzo Subject: hippie now, herkimer stones, njc I have mined for herkimer stones (diamonds) in Herkimer NY. ps. When you sign up for yahoo groups, you can request that you receive an email instead of having to sign in to yahoo. I did both for both fests. After requesting the email, I went back to the original link that Dave and Mark posted which takes you to the yahoo group. This way I can sign in to the group, and see who is a member, look at photos, or see any archive posts. Here's the links again for both fests. http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/OzFest2010/?yguid=2526198 http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/SoCalJoniFest09/?yguid=2526198 I hope I explained that right. Many of you know "Smurf" (Bob Murphy), funny-man, Ethel Merman impersonator, Jonifest attendee for many years, and all around wonderful guy. Sadly, very sadly, Bob is losing his battle with pancreatic cancer, and is in the ending stages of life. At the beginning of this horrible disease, Bob made the choice not to broadcast this news to the entire list. At this point, he has only passing times of lucidity. I've been in contact with his caregivers, and they have suggested that good wishes are most appropriate at this time instead of visits which are very taxing to him. I know there are many of you that would like to send wishes to him while he can still receive them, and the time to do that is also very limited. If you would like to send wishes, please e-mail me as soon as possible with whatever you'd like to say, and I will read them to him in person from you. His caregivers added that "get well soon" probably isn't the thing right now. What would be great is more on the lines of "You're in our thoughts" or remembrances of something from fest or your times together with him. I hate to be the bearer of this kind of news. I often refer to myself as an "old hippie." I say it with fondness for the experiences - - both good and bad - that I had throughout the late 60s and early 70s. I know it is too early to take bookings and that's not what I am asking for. The database was set up purely to get an early indication of interest. It won't be taken as any kind of official registration until I am asking for deposits. That won't occur until about December, 2009. I may, however have to make a tentative booking for the venue because they have indicated to me that they have received some requests for weddings at the retreat for March, 2010. So, my idea is to just get some sort of indication of approximately how many may attend. If the numbers are much lower than 30, it may not be viable because the prices I have calculated are based on that number. Any less and it may be too expensive for anyone. I have also included in the database, number of people in each group, type of accommodation requested and dietary requirements so I can give fair warning to the retreat. The OzFest group is here http://groups.yahoo.com/group/OzFest2010 It might be a good idea to bookmark the site in your browser so you can drop back at any time and check for any changes or news. I will send out periodic e-mails to the group members but I don't want to fill up people's in boxes either. So far, there are only 17 members and most of them have not entered any details in the database. Thanks to those new people who have signed up. So far, Marion and I are the only ones who are going according to the database :-) Remember, the database is just to give me some indication. It is NOT a registration so, don't be afraid that you will be asked for money. That won't happen for a long time yet and I will give plenty of notice before it does. The database is an expression of interest only just so that I am confident enough to continue planning. It will also guarantee the accommodation you require. You are free to back out whenever you like up until the deposit is paid. There are other useful things on the OzFest site too so, please browse around the links on the side, not just the main page. There is a photograph of Kangaroo Valley, the menu for the event, links to useful sites such as transport and entertainment sites in Australia and, shortly, the Yahoo people will be uploading the retreat layout so you can see where the rooms are and what's in them. You can also discuss the event on the main page or send a message to everyone. Oh, and there is a new logo for the event. I'm cashing in on the new blockbuster film by Baz Luhrmann. Who knows, maybe Hugh and Nicole will drop in. Mark in Sydney PS I hope my sympathies can reach Bob "Smurf" Murphy. Although I have never met you, I got extremely emotional when Patti informed me earlier today. I guess it's just because I get a sense that you are a man with a good heart and don't deserve this adversity. I only hope there is a chance that you can recover. If I was religious, I would pray for you but, I'll just keep you in my heart instead. I hope there will be a chance for me to get to know you. Hang in there, Patti.
