"nolite te bastardes carborundorum". i enjoy the way atwood writes in plainspeak, words drip into a vat of irony. i've also read the edible woman, that's a hoot and a half, and have read bits and pieces of this and that. just looked at my atwood collection and i've got a collection of stories entitled 'good bones' which was published in 1992. by O.W. Toad .. see what I mean, she's pulling our leg, for sure ;--) Mags aka Margaret ;-PP i exist as i am, that is enough ~walt whitman~ __________________________________________________________________ Get a sneak peak at messages with a handy reading pane with All new Yahoo! Listened to Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennet, Nat King Cole, Andy Williams and other songs that reminded me of him. When we were young we didn't own a TV, we listened to the radio for entertainment and now, sometimes, my friends get a grin out of me knowing the words to "Tammy" and "I Left My Heart in San Francisco". My father worked for Roland Corporation for years until his health began to fail; my brother, Simon, had his photo taken at the age of 7 or 8 at a NAMM show in 1977 on a spectacular drum set. They used the photo in one of the subsequent magazine layouts. I have a copy if anyone is interested in seeing it. Just reminiscing and getting out some of my feelings. Another song that comes to mind is "Love" from the Wild Things Run Fast album-the lyrics were adapted from Corinthians. Although i speak in tongues Of men and angels I'm just sounding brass And tinkling cymbals without love-- Love suffers long-- Love is kind!-- Enduring all things-- Love has no evil in mind If i had the gift of prophecy-- And all the knowledge-- And the faith to move the mountains Even if i understood all of the mysteries-- If i didn't have love I'd be nothing Love--never looks for love-- Love's not puffed up-- Or envious-- Or touchy-- Because it rejoices in the truth Not in iniquity Love sees like a child sees As a child i spoke as a child-- I thought and i understood as a child-- But when i became a woman-- I put away childish things And began to see through a glass darkly Where, as a child, i saw it face to face Now, i only know it in part Fractions in me Of faith and hope and love And of these great three Love's the greatest beauty Love Love Love ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Nov 2008 21:00:14 -0500 From: David Eoll Subject: need assistance, pls - njc Sorry to spam the list with this, but I haven't been able to resolve my problem otherwise. I don't know why I was thinking about this today, but did you consider Joni to be a hippie? Was she a part of the movement or did she just happen to be there? Which of her songs do you think best reflect the attitudes and beliefs of the counterculture? I remember reading an interview with Joni where she said in one way she wasn't a hippie at all and in another way, she was the Queen of the hippies. I think that suits her well. What do you think about the writer behind the song Woodstock as far as this topic goes? - -Monika NR: Your Own, Sylvia: A Verse Portrait of Sylvia Plath by Stephanie Hemphill ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Nov 2008 20:49:53 -0800 (PST) From: Monika Bogdanowicz Subject: Horoscope: Trivial Joni fun Celebrity Horoscope for Joni Mitchell: Deeply attuned to his emotional condition and of others, Scorpio is accurately aware of words or people whom he/she senses are false or insincere. She has a lovely melancholy voice that is so affecting. I loved her all these years with EBTG and as a solo artist. B In fact, I can imagine her soulful voice singing: "Where are you now/ are you in some hotel room/ Does it have a view?.." I think she should cover a Joni song since she has done some covers of songs by Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Cyndi Lauper, Danny Whitten and even Burt Bacharach. B Other performers who I'd love to hear do a Joni cover: B (1) Kari Bremnes - Hejira (hi Oddmund!) - love to hear it in a foreign language B (2) Tom Waits - Barangrill - if only to hear his ogre voice wrap around this song B (3) Michael Nyman - Paprika Plains - should be a brilliant reinvention B (4) Manhattan Transfer - Shadows and Light - more as a vocalese showcase rather than their famous voice-blending B (5) Clannad - This Flight Tonight - It would be great to hear Maire Brennan's plaintive voice amidst Uillean pipes B (6) Matt Bianco - Sweet Sucker Dance - can be a reason to invite Basia to sing this song and Danny White's percussive playing B (7) Susan Werner - Man to Man - This woman is unbelievably talented so she can sing any Joni song in the catalogue B (8) Squirrel Nut Zippers - All I Want - I want to hear how they will re-arrange AIW and make it more bluegrass and less New Orleans B (9) Patricia Barber - Blue Motel Room - her grandly understated voice could make this song even sexier. B (10) Luka Bloom - Magdalene Laundries - Love a little Gaelic charm to sing this tragic song B and B Rickie Lee Jones - Sunny Sunday - why not? But then anything RLJ sings is magic. B - --- En date deB : Dim 16.11.08, Mark-Leon Thorne a C)critB : I don't recognise a lot of the names you mentioned, Joseph but, Tracey Thorn stands out. I would love to hear her tackle any of Joni's songs but, See You Sometime is an excellent choice for her voice. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Nov 2008 13:15:28 +0700 From: do9eatdo9@yahoo.com Subject: Re: Song for a funeral I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your mother.
