NJC This isn't a show I watch but the synopsis sounded interesting because of the music connection. I don't like drama but other people's drama can be entertaining! Cassy NP: Corry Hanna - All You Can Do A WIFE WHO SUPPORTS HER HUSBAND'S DREAMS OF SUPERSTARDOM AND LET'S HER DAUGHTER WALK ALL OVER HER SWAPS WITH A NO-NONSENSE MOTHER OF NINE WHO RUNS HER HOME LIKE A BUSINESS, ON WIFE SWAP" "Berwick/Roachford" A wife who has sacrificed her own dreams to her husband's 30-year-old pursuit of rock superstardom and who indulges her pre-teen daughter swaps with a woman with nine children who runs her house with an iron hand and relies on her husband's total support, on "Wife Swap," FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 21 (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network. Each week from across the country, two families with very different values are chosen to take part in a two-week long challenge. The wives from these two families exchange husbands, children and lives (but not bedrooms) to discover what it's like to live another woman's life. It's a mind-blowing experiment that often ends up changing their lives forever. (Note. This episode was originally scheduled for 11/14). For the Berwicks from Illinois, life is about pursuing your dreams -- as long as your name is Pete. Pete (50) is still chasing his dream of becoming a mega rock star, and wife Denise (54) will do anything to support him. Pete's so focused on his own career, he takes bookings even on holidays. 10-year old daughter Faith (9) feels she takes second place to her dad's dreams. Pete's music gigs don't pay enough to cover the bills, so he makes his money singing telegrams dressed like a gorilla, a chicken or a pirate. As well as making all of Pete's bookings, Denise does all the household chores; Pete believes that "(brides') wedding dresses are white so they match the appliances." Denise does everything for Faith too, including putting up with her temper tantrums. But in Georgia no one talks back to Val Roachford. Val (43) runs her family like a business, training her nine children to unload groceries assembly line style. She expects her husband, Greg (40), and the children to do whatever needs to be done to keep the house running smoothly. 19-year-old daughter Briana had been co-opted as a third parent and is so busy caring for her eight brothers and sisters, she never has a moment alone. In this house, dreams take a back seat to efficiency in managing a household of eleven. In the first week, Denise moves to Georgia and has to adjust to the efficiency of the Roachford home. She worries the children are stifling their passions as they follow the regimen of all work and no play, and bonds with Briana, as she warns her about giving up her dreams. Meanwhile at the Berwicks', Val gets into a chicken suit and sings for her new family's supper. She criticizes Pete for his selfish lifestyle and follows him to one of his gigs to ask him why he isn't at home with his daughter. In the second week of the swap, to show the family the importance of fun, Denise dresses everyone up in chicken suits to perform "the world's largest chicken gram." At the Berwicks', Val locks up Pete's instruments and invents "Holiday Day" to make up for all the holidays Pete has missed. Can Denise help the Roachfords see how important dreams are? And can Val show Pete that the only thing he should be striving for is more time with his daughter? "Wife Swap" is an RDF USA production. It was created by Stephen Lambert and is executive-produced by Mike Gamson, Stef Wagstaffe and Michael Davies of Embassy Row. Stephen Pettinger, Neil Regan, Julie Cooper and Will Nothacker are co-executive producers. "Wife Swap" is broadcast with Spanish subtitles. This program carries a TV-PG parental guideline. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Nov 2008 17:11:02 +0000 From: Patti Parlette Subject: RE: Wally Lamb loves Joni! Wolfgang's Vault is proud to announce Concert Vault for the iPhone and iPod Touch! Now you can listen to your favorite concerts, radio stations or search our complete archives from anywhere -- all your playlists and favorite concerts playing right on your iPhone or iPod Touch. And the best part is it's free! About the Concert Vault App Available Now at the iTunes App Store We're wrapping up our week of 80's new wave with a double whammy dressed in leg warmers. In our featured concert, check out Echo & the Bunnymen during the tour supporting their seminal album, Ocean Rain. Then give a listen to our featured playlist for the weekend, which includes a thoughtful sampling of '80s gems from the King Biscuit archive. Loved by some for its modern incorporation of disparate musical influences and hated by others for its ubiquity, this playlist proves that "80s music" as a genre is still alive and well. Turn back the clock a bit further for our other releases. You can hear a killer set of good ol' rock 'n' roll from Traffic co-founder Dave Mason, as he and his band tore it up at 1978's California Jam. And the historians among you will be delighted to see 1973 sets from both Hocus Pocus, a Dutch band who merged prog rock and Zeppelin-esque heavy metal, and Shadowfax, a San Francisco-based band whose dance-inducing rock makes us wish they had stuck around for much longer. Our interviews for the weekend include an amazing pair of discussions with Chrissie Hynde. Recorded two years apart (the first taped before the original Pretenders line-up split, the second after she had a daughter with Ray Davies), they paint a very revealing picture of both her career and personal life. I do think that this particular church sucks but not religion itself. I don't even consider myself a religious person, more or less a spiritual one. However, religion itself is a beautiful thing. All religions essentially advocate the same basic principles--love, peace, and happiness. Of course they all have their different rituals, holy books, holidays, etc. Religion is a clutch to man. Ultimately, I believe religion is man made and I can see why. It is some hope for man to hold on to. I can understand that. It is a little light in the darkness. Religion is a good concept. It is not religion that harms but people.. People screw up religion by taking doctrines from long ago, interpreting them as they please, and taking action based on those words. Nowhere in the bible does it say that someone should refuse communion to another if they believe in someone or something against their own beliefs. This church situation is a perfect example in how humans corrupt religion. It isn't the other way around. - -Monika - --- On Fri, 11/14/08, Bob.Muller@Fluor.com wrote: http://tinyurl.com/6jxc86 One of our "fine" Catholic churches in town is now going to refuse offering communion to those who voted Obama, saying they are putting their "souls at risk" by doing so. These religions that promise eternal life, primarily the monotheistic religions, all appeal to the same meme (mind virus, mental gene in a sense) that has made gambling, whether it be in Las Vegas, or on Wall Street, so attractive. That is to say little investment - big return. The masses of poor in the world, by professing their faith in religion and performing various rituals, are promised eternal life replete with riches upon death. Talk about a bargain!!! Who could resist? Hence their popularity. The Eastern religions such as Buddhism, etc... seem to more nearly approximate - and I say approximate because as Lori suggests - it is humans after all that have created these various beliefs - seem far more reasonable and plausible. Yet he is only another species of animal of which he has already decimated untold numbers and is the principle cause of the biodiversity holocaust we are living in but which gets little attention because of human ego (well Joni tries to be a messenger). However, they are still man's attempt at achieving some form of peace of mind in a world filled with suffering and strife. Philosophy has largely been characterized as the search for "the truth", when in reality it is a search for peace of mind in a quest for "the truth" and as such, only brings more and more disquieting possibilities as to any meaning in man's life or the fate of the ego. Peace of mind can be achieved temporarily through self-deception (sometimes taking the form of the various religions), opiates and associated drugs (reference Lori again and her quotes by Marx), but eternal peace of mind only occurs upon death, when the mind, as in the mind of any other animal, ceases to perceive and process. And ironically, humans fear death, like all other animals, more than anything else. only tormented persons want truth Man is like other animals, wants food and success and women. not truth. Only if the mind Tortured by some interior tension has despaired of happiness then it hates it's life-cage and seeks further. - -- - -Mark On Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 4:41 PM, Lori Fye wrote: > Rian wrote: > > > It's human who corrupted religion, not religion who corrupted human. > > But ... was it not humans who essentially "invented" religion? > > Lori > Santa Rosa, CA ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Nov 2008 19:03:13 -0500 From: Victor Johnson Subject: Re: NJC Why religion sucks, part 348 I agree. Saw her NYC a few years back: Tony-nominated singer-actress Ann Hampton Callaway will release her latest solo recording, "At Last," in February 2009. The Telarc Jazz disc, which celebrates romance, will arrive in stores Feb. 3, 2009. Expect original songs as well as tunes by Cole Porter, Stevie Nicks, Harold Arlen, Joni Mitchell, Chick Corea and more. The new recording, according to press notes, "is a mix of jazz standards, versatile pop songs and a couple original tunes, each woven together to create a narrative that is perhaps as cinematic as it is musical." In a statement Callaway said, "I always think of CDs like movies. You wouldn't download one scene from a movie. You want the whole thing, the whole story. An album shouldn't be just a bunch of songs in a sequence that's front-loaded with hits. It's really about creating an emotional journey that starts in one place and ends in a place that's very different." Callaway is backed by pianist Ted Rosenthal, bassist Jay Leonhart and drummer Victor Lewis. Guest musicians include guitarist Rodney Jones, violinist Mads Tolling, saxophonist Teodross Avery, flugelhornist Marvin Stamm, trombonist Wycliffe Gordon and percussionist Emedin Rivera. The complete track listing for "At Last" follows: "What Is This Thing Called Love?" - Cole Porter "Comes Love" - Lew Brown, Sammy Sept, Charles Tobias "Carey" - Joni Mitchell "At Last" - Mack Gordon, Harry Warren "Spain" - Arte Maren, Al Jarreau, Joaquin Rodrigo, Chick Corea "Lazy Afternoon" - Jerome Moross, John Latouche "Landslide" - Stevie Nicks "Save a Place for Me" - Ann Hampton Callaway "Over the Rainbow - Yip Harburg, Harold Arlen "Finding Beauty" - Ann Hampton Callaway "On My Way to You" - Alan and Marilyn Bergman, Michel Legrand Not only a singer, Ann Hampton Callaway is also an acclaimed songwriter, whose works have been performed by Barbra Streisand, Patti LuPone and dozens of others. For her Broadway bow in Swing!, Callaway garnered a Tony nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical, and her many recordings include "Ann Hampton Callaway," "Bring Back Romance," "To Ella with Love" and "After Ours."
