I am one of those fortunate ones who had the privilege of getting into Joni's music from the beginning, around 1967. I've avidly followed her art since then. She has been such a joy and a challenge in my music appreciation. I have enjoyed all of her albums and rolled with the changes, even though I prefer and more often play the Sixties and Seventies albums. I tend to enjoy the earlier albums from all my favorite artists, it just seems that the newness gives their work that extra je ne sais quois. I do have to say that Joni's music has been more consistently Great than her contemporaries. I know his is very subjective, but she rarely drops the ball for more that a song or two, and with "Shine" her work continues that arc of her impeccable artistic vision. My favorite is "Blue", but the margin is very small over many of her other wonderful works. Bonneville Bruce Sunnyslope, Idaho P.S. I have a degree in Geography/Regional and Environmental Planning. I have worked in the field since 1983 and I have ben big into GIS (computer mapping, for the uninitiated out there) since 1984. You'd think so, but some people are so righteous (in their own eyes) that they feel they have some sort of god-given right to pass judgment on others anytime, anywhere. Some people wouldn't recognize courtesy if it smacked them in the face (which it is unlikely to do.) The anonymity of the handles used by people who post comments on youtube or on news stories on the net makes this much easier to do, but there are plenty of people out there (I've had the un-pleasure of having to deal with these people at my job) who don't hesitate to pass judgment on you and your family, to wish some kind of misfortune on you, or to call you names and swear at you because they're having a bad day (or a bad life.) I never cease to be amazed at some of the nastiness out there. __________________________________________________________________ Yahoo! In Canada, we call November 11 Remembrance Day and people wear poppy pins to remember those who died in battle. I work for the government and we get November 11 off. My daughter Sarah is working for the govt as a temp right now, so she had the day off too. We decided to go for a walk and ended up walking through the University of Toronto campus and I showed her some places she had never been before, some shortcuts I remembered from my days as a student there. As we passed Hart House, we noticed a sign that said the Soldiers' Tower was open. This is a tower at the west end of Hart House and I was never aware that it was even called the Soldiers' Tower. Apparently they don't open it very often and we decided to walk up. As you walk up the stairs, there are stained glass windows commemorating people who fought for Canada. When you reach the top (it isn't the very top after all, although I thought so when we were there - at the very top is a carillon but you aren't allowed to go up there), there is a memorial room with photos and memorabilia from WWI and WWII, including a portrait of John McRae who wrote the poem "In Flanders Fields." There's also an explanation of how the poppy came to be a symbol of remembrance: "Poppy seeds live a very long time and will remain dormant under the soil for up to 80 years. Any disturbance that scuffles sleeping seeds back up to the surface of the soil will break their dormancy and result in a burst of flowers. This is what happened in Flanders during World War One when bombs completely destroyed the existing vegetation and at the same time stirred up millions of poppy seeds. The spectacular result was millions of wild poppies turning the landscape red." More info on the Soldiers' Tower here if you have the time or interest to check it out: http://alumni.utoronto.ca/s/731/index.aspx?sid=731&gid=9&pgid=822 Now remembering my Dad, Michael John McKay, who served in the Canadian Army during WWII and was certainly in the Netherlands and also (I think) in Belgium during that time, and who died on January 25, 2000. __________________________________________________________________ Yahoo! If you went to your local music store, you got one version, If you bought if from Amazon, you got another. And if you downloaded it from I-tunes, you got yet another (adding Harlem in Havana & I Had A King). It was released on vinyl, but with none of the extra tracks. Even if you're a Joni cover trainspotter like me, it was hard to keep up without a scorecard and without purchasing multiple versions of the same tracks. Maybe they didn't know that the project was going to be so warmly received, awarded, etc. After the Grammy, they should have re-released a 2-CD set, available in stores, and including ALL the tracks; particularly given the fact that the post-Grammy sales were as strong as they were. It was thought to have a magical quality similar to our "apple a day keeps the doctor away," and was said to grow in churchyards as a reproach to the dead, "who need never have come there if they had taken their yarrow broth faithfully every day while living." The main use, however, was that of an herb to heal wounds. The genus was named after Achilles, who is said to have used A. millefollium to staunch the wounds of his soldiers. Soldier's Woundweed and Carpenter's Weed are other old English names. ~ Allan Armitage on a side note: I found this in my search for paprika plains, maybe you have seen this: http://www.herbleonhard.com/Joni/joni.html interesting _________________________________________________________________ Stay up to date on your PC, the Web, and your mobile phone with Windows Live http://clk.atdmt.com/MRT/go/119462413/direct/01/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Nov 2008 11:56:19 -0500 (EST) From: scam1@freeway.net Subject: RS 100 greatest singers Not sure if anyone has posted this, but here is the link showing Joni at #42. http://www.rollingstone.com/news/coverstory/24161972/page/42 Cheers! A comment on the 2004 primary: the word I heard was that Obama was far and away the best candidate but that he had no chance against Dan Hynes (an incredibly well connected attractive already won state wide candidate) and Blair Hull ($$$$) and Maria Pappas (has a good following). And yet... with maybe six other candidates in the race he got 53% or 54% of the vote - and won all over the state, taking downstate all-white counties or at least doing very well in them - people just fell in love with Obama - and he was what, 30 points ahead of Jack Ryan when Ryan dropped out of the fall election and no Illinois Republican would run against Obama because Obama was so popular - just incredible. Watching that was stunning and having followed Obama's career since he ran for the Illinois senate in 1996, and given my feelings for him, I connected with his pre-annoucement campaign exploratory committee in 2006 - looking through my email I find I was getting campaign news from him in January 2007, a month before the announcement - I thought Clinton and Edwards were also very good candidates but for 2008 I would go with he heart and go for Obama. When I put the Obama 08 bumper sticker on the jeep in February 2007 people asked me who he was - what a feeling it was watching everything in Grant Park last Tuesday and remembering it 40 years ago... what a time it has been -- and doesn't it restore our hope for the United States that we could elect who we wanted - after two missed tries -- and that an African American won three states of the Confederacy - we only lost Montana (!) by 16,000 votes - North Dakota was rather close, and Missouri was a micro thin margin - the scope of this victory gives Obama a national mandate so that something might finally get done - indeed we were the change we were waiting for - Vince On Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 1:51 AM, wrote: > "What about > Obama?" > > That's what a friend said to me in Spring 2004 when he asked > who I was supporting in that year's senatorial primary race. > Ironically, at that time my brother-in-law worked for a woman who had > thrown her hat in the ring as a contender for the Democratic candidacy > for senator. Seems like it was a good time to think about the excellent music released this year. I always look forward to reading what other's opinions are, as I value the musical diversity that resides on the JMDL. After reviewing my list I was remiss in not mentioning my friends from Colorado! Driftwood Fire released their first CD. Check it out at www.driftwoodfire.com. Also, everyone needs to grab a copy of Kay's new one for the holidays. Welcome to those newbies, and sorry for not posting NJC on my original mail. Doh! An 11 year veteran makes the same mistake when not posting often. I can feel that the frequency of the planet has changed.. > Well i really don't know whether Obama is for real, time will tell. One thing i'm sure of is that he has the almost uncanny ability to move and inspire people, even myself on the few occasions i listened to him. All critics aside, he has a real talent. It just so happens that my daughter is taking lessons with the wonderful jazz pianist Michel Sardaby. Michel is 73 y.o and has played with all the greats ; Dexter Gordon, Ron Carter, Max Roach, & many others. The lessons are very unique in that he's not teaching any < recipes > but instead how to develop the artistry in oneself, how to become a more accomplished human being. So far it's going great and he keeps us 4 hours for a 1 hour lesson. I'm fortunate that he lets me attend and take notes. Anyway yesterday he mentioned Obama with pride in his eyes as he's a black man too. He said that in his opinion the explanation of Obama's great skill as an orator is, unlike his opponent, in Obama's ability to keep the tempo, to deliver fluid and therefore emotional speeches. I don't do a good job explaining it but you get the idea : all the attributes that make jazz & music in general move and inspire people. We have a mixed-race man in the White House. Black and White united in one man. I like 'The Sun's headline the next morning (The Sun is a very low-brow newspaper which suddenly turned Left-wing once Labour came into power, not to be populist at all) which read : 'Obama Has Massive Election, The Earth Moves'. Funny, but probably true. Like it or not, cultural change comes from North America. Finally the American populace has embraced change. Hold hands and walk towards it. If i'm going to travel from France i would rather have more time on my hands to take more than just a weekend in sunny California and i really cannot take any time off in september as it's < back to work > time. My preferences would be : april, july, august or early january. Dave if you read this please email me privately with your address as i need to send you some cds for you and Barry.
