Childish, maybe, but very very funny! :)) We've left the Blue discussion behind, I know, but if I can just add my tuppence worth. Like Bob, I can't say I was ever hugely affected by Blue, though I can see it's a very strong album. My first encounter with Joni's music was 'For the Roses' which my older sister was totally into, and though I mostly enjoyed the earlier albums when I found my way to them, none of them for me came close to FTR. C&S was gorgeous but almost too slick, and it was Hissing and Hejira especially that really got their hooks into me and have stayed with me for life. I'm still a bit bemused by the popularity of Blue, but although Joni seems to be a bit cynical about it ('It's only seen as my best because it sold most', or that kind of thing), I think that kind of popular acclaim has to be respected. If Blue can still speak to so many people 30 years later, it must be great art. But not an album I would put in her top three. Different strokes... There were fold-out panels on the side of the computer screen that gave you some privacy. I really like this method. There are other polling places here where they had to use a black marker and fill in boxes and then send the paper thing into a slot like where you put a credit card. One of the amendments here in Arkansas had to do with "idiots" having the right to vote. I wish I could find a copy of this amendment online to show you. I was hopeful given all the polls but cautious knowing that if this race were at all close it could be a long night or even worse & with the past history of voter 'irregularities' I was concerned that any close Obama victory could be at risk if the election were anywhere close. All day long I was singing to myself 'Landslide' (it kinda works) wishing but not dare expecting such a thing. I got together with some folks who were Obama supporters (the more rural community I live in now is less liberal than where I used to live in SB- but there are pockets of us & I suspect this area is changing like many parts of the country) got together at a friends to watch the returns. When Ohio went for Obama it was a great indication of the magnitude of things to come, then New Mexico, then Virginia! Then all of a sudden, taking us all by surprise was the shocking announcement that Obama had won. It was barely past 8pm! We all hugged & shouted happy new year! LOL. The numbers are astounding & certainly it has been a historical landslide victory. It was so unexpected that it wasn't until part way into his acceptance speech that I realized he was no longer a candidate but that he was really our next president! And there is a realization that this will be a president I am proud of & that I will look forward to listening to. Someone who has the vision & the ability to turn our country around from the trainwreck towards hell we've been on, someone who has the PROVEN ability to unite people, someone who has the desire & ability to put his brilliant mind towards creating a new economy based on new energy policies that can create jobs, be environmentally sustaining & turn us away from the medieval war mongering country we've become. It is a hopeful time in spite of the mess we're in. And yes of course I know it will be hard work & that it will take all of us to be particpants in that & yet it is such an incredible feeling after all these years of horror & colored alerts & finger pointing pseudo patriotism to feel so proud to be a citizen of this country once again & to be so proud that so many of my fellow country men & women overwhelmingly made the sane intelligent choice. Big sigh. I almost want to hang a flag out on my porch! Like my (very republican) neighbor has had on his porch for all these years. I am aware of how amazing it is to be living at this time in history & to be a part of it. It is so invigorating to see how many people exercised their right to vote (especially the youth!) & that our democracy, as broken as it has seemed at times, is still working. And even without the ethnic significance of this event that is so profound, we are witnessing something else extraordinary- that someone like Barack grew up to beat so many odds that were not in his favor & miraculously it sometimes seems, he will be become our next president. And what a thoughtful decision he made last night, to forego the fireworks. I hope he can take some time now alone to allow himself to mourn for his beloved grandmother. This celebration is tempered by realizing how much further we have to go as evidenced by the sad results from California voters re Prop 8. What does it mean for all those couples who are legally wed? Still, last night & today I am singing a song I have always felt would be more appropriate as our national anthem & at this moment, am feeling the beauty of in my bones more than ever. Based on his record, hmmm....I haven't really heard him say 'let's cut the military and use that money for something else'- one of the many 900 lb gorillas in the room.
