I vividly remember watching the 2004 Democratic Convention and being un-enthused for the most part save for two speeches; Al Sharpton, because he jumped off the party playbook and told it like it was, and an unknown (to me) Senator named Barack Obama. My wife and I watched this brilliant, eloquent, inspirational man speak and when he was done I turned to her and said "Damn, when can I vote for THAT GUY for President?" And that day came today - I got to the Augusta Road Baptist Church at 6:45, saying "hey" to some neighbors and also to some co-workers who live nearby. In all the years I've been voting there (ever since 1986) I had never seen a black person in line. There were quite a few today. It's an interesting exercise, looking at people and trying to figure out who they're going to vote for - I'm sure I was mostly wrong in my assumptions. And after about 30 minutes of snaking through the line, my touch screen lit up. And there it was..."For President - Barack Obama". I thought about that evening watching him in 2004. I thought about all the people that have sacrificed and died between then and now so that I could exercise my right to vote. SC has not been like our neighbors Georgia and North Carolina - we have been solid red from the get-go. But I think we're going to be closer than the polls have indicated. I'd like to believe that anyway. Then I get in my car, and just by chance the song cued up to play is the new Richie Havens cover of "Won't Get Fooled Again", and I have to laugh at the coincidence of it all. "The change it had to come, we knew it all along...I get on my knees and pray - we won't get fooled again". I'm multi-tasking, singing and crying and driving, and laughing when Richie sings: "Meet the new boss...same as the old boss". I don't think so. Not this time. This one is NOT close. Obama has a LOCK on the 252 EV's that Kerry won in 2004, all with a double digit lead. Add Iowa, New Mexico, and Colorado, three states that are also uncontested, and that gives him 273 EV's and the Presidency. That's not even counting the "battleground" states that he will most likely take: Florida, Ohio, North Carolina, Virginia. Once those flip Obama's way, the newsboys will have a HARD time keeping you convinced that this one is going to be a nail-biter. Close? No. This one is going to be a landslide, and we pick up more seats in the Senate and the House as well. Hi Debra. The law about not not wearing candidate-related material (t-shirts, buttons, hats, etc.) has been around for many, many years. It actually makes sense. You cannot carry a sign, etc. within 150 feet of a polling place. Just think about being bombarded by campaign workers as you're trying to vote. Not conducive to secrecy, etc. As for having to show ID, I believe that varies by state. Here in Massachusetts, only first time voters have to show ID. But other states are different. Illinois, for example, requires you to show ID. And, it sent chills up my spine to see a line at my polling place this morning. I've never seen that here. And the polling place where I used to vote ALWAYS had long lines. I guess they actually made the news this morning, the line was so long. I'm thrilled to see the excitement and participation. I really think that reading Obama's "The Audacity of Hope," McCain's "Worth the Fighting For" and Madeline Albright's "Memo to the President Elect" have been pretty essential during this campaign. I pulled out McCain's book last night and read a few chapters. Some of it was eery, given the perspective of the recent economic events. His descriptions of meeting Charles Keating were especially revealing, as was his admission that he entered politics to bolster his own self-esteem (which didn't really need it). I applaud his honesty, but cast my vote for Obama, who turned down several hundred lucrative job offers after graduating from Harvard Law School to work advocating for the poor of Chicago. That's the leader we need now IMHO. (I've known since day 1 that that was how I would vote. But it's always good to review specifics to talk intelligently about the candidates.) Hi! Tonight I would just love to know what Joni is doing. I'd love to know where and with whom she is spending such a historic night. This election is especially moving for me because I feel like a time-traveler, returning to my passion in the 1960's (relax, I still have lots of passion to go until this middle aged lady returns home). I remember Joni coming into my life and capturing my soul in 1968. That was the same year I graduated from high school. I thought this was the most wonderful and magical gift I received... my first Joni album. Since then Joni has helped form so many aspects of my life as I emerged from adolescence, to young adulthood and then traveled through my 30's, 40's and now my 50's..and my approach to my 60's. Like Anita...(your post moved me deeply), I have experienced so many "coincidences/synchronicity with many members of our Joni family. Being on the JMDL unites us globally. I'm in the 1960's in my mind, marching in The Poor People's March, and so many civil rights's marches. I remember Martin Luther's Speech...hearing Martin Luther's speech also helped to shape my set of values and personal view of our country. I remember the energy I felt...and staying up all night so many nights..."I love to dance"...and having many friends next to me on those famous occasions. And I had a transistor and listened for Joni's music but rarely heard it on the radio stations. Tonight history will be made in many aspects. I know Joni will have many emotions and reactions. Maybe, just following her 65TH birthday, she'll be, once again, inspired to share her music and wisdom with us throughout the world. Oh...I can't imagine Joni allowing any portion of any of her music to be used in an advertising campaign. But, it is fun to think of all the possibilities. My love to you all. Unlike my generation who see color and are reluctant to change------you guys went out there and donated, recruited, voted, and took our country back. You saw no color because you know it just isn't right, you embraced change because you know we needed to change direction, you took control of your own future. Thank you, thank you very much. There is much work still to be done. RIGHT ON!!! POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!! __________________ Life may not be the party we hoped for. I'm right there with you.) but here in Shoreline, I was given a choice of voting via some kind of video device or filling in dots on a ballot. I chose to fill in dots. >>> In Snohomish County just north of Seattle, there is only one way to vote. A couple of weeks prior to the election, ballots are mailed to registered voters along with a thick booklet explaining each of the issues and a short biography of each person running for office. One's ballot can be mailed back for the cost of a stamp and as long as the postmark is dated by 11/04/08 it will be counted, or the ballot can be personally delivered to a sanctioned drop box. This is the first place I've been registered that I didn't vote at a booth after having my ID verified. Yes, the last presidential election I really did use the dreaded method of punching a probe through a perforated circle next to my choice potentially causing hanging chads and my final ballot cast in Michigan (a school tax issue) was read by an optical scanner. I am pleased to report that Initiative 1000 (the right to die with dignity) is handily passing and the other issue I was high on - requiring licenses that utilize background checks for all employees of assisted living facilities, nursing homes or rehab centers - is long overdue and also passing as I type this email. Sheepishly I have to admit that this is the first presidential election I've voted in where the person I voted for is actually the winner though I did campaign for a winner years ago, before I became a citizen. Do you think the outgoing administration will hand the new administration a balanced check-book? Is a balanced check-book a requirement of the outgoing cabinet? To me, one of the first jobs an incoming President has is to oversee an accounting of where the country stands financially, it's hard to pay the bills when you don't know what you have to begin with, even harder when you don't have anything to pay the bills with. Rambling thought... remember when there was a huge push for citizens to invest and handle their own retirement instead of Social Security being handled by the Federal Government? Imagine where we'd all be now if we'd gambled our stability on "investments"? (Maybe the market was lobbying for a rapid infusion of cash) I AM curious to know what percentage of the votes are actually physically counted before they "call" an election. And by what percentage the projected winner must be ahead in order for them to have the opponent come out and concede? Do you think there's a "mercy rule" that made it happen at an earlier time than in elections past? I am hopeful about our leadership for the first time in 8 years and will add the President-elect and his family to my devotions for a safe term-of-office. For those of you piano playing and Joni music scholar listers out there (especially cKarma who has been gently but firmly goading me for over a year to do this) I present the comprehensive and unabridged score to Judgement of the Moon and Stars. All parts of all instruments are transcribed note for note over a period of weeks and have been painstakingly proofread by master pianist Barnaby Finch. I would highly recommend 2-sided printing if you print a copy as it is 9 pages long!! Les, I am hoping that as the JMDL piano literature library grows we may see a separate menu item for it, outside of "guitar tabs" so that it is more intuitive to find. Enjoy... http://tinyurl.com/6foj7s cheers, Dave B ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2008 #278 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe -------
