Obama in his book "The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming The American Dream" was right. On the first chapter, he tells a little story about my country. Then he stated that most American can't locate Indonesia on map. This a bit confusing for Indonesian because, for 60 years, the destiny of this nation (Indonesia) has been directly related to US foreign policy. Yes. He's right. This election is not only important to Americans, but for every people in the world too. So my dear American friends, choose the right one please. She said "small family business, small family farms in real estate alone any farm and business has to operate land is expensive an valued above 1m the families have to sell to make the taxes at death of parent or grand-parent.....its awfull.... My family has survived by selling it over time to the next generation each time which is a 38% capitol gain to the generation getting the payment. they (gov't) get their money.. Its needs appealing right now if my brother died I'd be screwed as we are not in the process of selling to the next generation. I would lose everything to the US government.....Thats a Fact..." Good thing for the mute button on remotes but I still want to hear what BS she's yapping about but her voice totally turns me off so I'd rather just leave it on mute. Bill Mahar called her, "Governor Avon Lady," and that sounds more like it. She sounds like a high-pitched car or appliance sales woman who won't let you off the hook with that nagging voice until you buy what she wants to to buy! No thanks, not the type of woman I can listen to under any circumstance. I can spot those type of ladies a mile away and I turn around, and run the hell away. I have become a news junkie unlike in 2004 when I was more curious about the conduct of the election rather than the actual results (although I still on the fence about the electoral college thing as the preferred mode of electing a president rather than popular votes -- just me). It is always interesting to read very different and oppositional opinions from writers. And whose viewpoint makes it to prime time news. B In all the debates I watched where a 'representative' group of people attend and a few even get selected to ask a question, I'm wondering if the questions are already known by the moderator so as not to veer away from the topic, or can someone ask a curveball question. A few months ago before the Wall Street financial meltdown, issues like immigration and border policing have been the centerpiece. I wish I can really hear what both candidates have to say to a lot of issues that are probably peripheral now since the economy has experienced its worst since 1929. B A noted film scholar -- David Bordwell -- has written about the idea of narratives and how the McCain and Obama campaigns focused on a specific and particular kind of narrativation to bolster the candidate. Fascinating read because it is not only a study in contrasts but it also informs us how campiagns and the whole enterprise of image-making are seen as more inmportant by the voters than any position of the candidate. B Anyway, I am way off base to my original topic: election-inspired freebies. Starbucks is giving free coffee on Tuesday in the Triangle but I am sure it is also nationwide. Some local bars and pubs here offer free drinks on election night as well as all kinds of food. The idea of community is once again promoted especially if there is a none-too-subtle encouragement for consumerism. I remember when I was growing up in the Philippines, that post-election counting of the votes takes days -- even weeks to do. The system then has yet to avail of the computerized system, plus if you are under a fascist dictatorship, you pray that election frauds would be minimized. There was no community celebration, just a fatiguing sense of 'let's-get-over-this-rigmarole' now. I'm wondering how our Joni bros and sisters are doing on election day as votes trickle in the news. I hope to see a movie about this election in the future. B Speaking of films, thanks Bob for the props for 'The Visitor' -- a very affecting film. That very last image in the film (and what it means in the context of the film) gives me goosebumps. Every time. Richard Jenkins is so moving with his facial placidity and non-expressions. If you all get the chance to watch 'The Band's Visit', it is also worth watching. What interests me more about that movie is how harmless it appears to us international audience, but the tension it has generated in the strained relations between Arab culture and their non-Arab neighbors, makes me even impressed the movie got made. Music became a universal symbol of understanding -- maybe not unity, but the start of an understanding. B Speaking of music, Linda Eder released an album where shecovered BSN. I am sure this is already in your radar, Bob, but just in case... Also a Japan-only release of Cheryl Bentyne's latest album showed that this Manhattan Transfer member performed BSN too. But CD prices from Nippon land is expensive. Also, I think aside from Norma Winstone's 'Big Yellow Taxi' cover, she released a Europe-only jazz album where she covered another Joni cover. I will check this again. B Back to lurkdom... Before I even heard about his vocal outputs in Manila, I knew him as a writer of this time-shifting and poetic 'Beautiful Losers'. I remember the characters still -- especially Kateri Tekakwitha (sp?) -- but in hindsight I think the book is a bit misogynistic and even (playfully) Orientalist in discourse, but that's probably my recollection of the book now. I am eager to read his 'Let us Compare Mythologies' book as I used to be so interested in reading about the idea of myth-making form Barthes and Derrida. B I like Cohen's "I'm Your Man" album a lot. It is sophisticated pop that is more Beat era than late 1980s ( or I think it was released in the late 1980s), but then I see Cohen as having a kindred spirit with Kerouac, Neal CassadyB and Burroughs (not so much with Ginsberg). B Like Tom Waits and David Frishberg, I love reading Cohen's lyrics more than the music though I don't certainly dislike the music either. B Thanks for the Cohen reminder, I need to listen to "I'm Your Man" again -- it has been, what, months since I did. I don't think the people voting McCain (or simply not voting Obama) for those reasons are of the volume that would impact the election one way or another. Unlike what the media seems to think, I don't think racism is as big a factor as they say it is. I believe in the majority of people more than that. However, there are plenty of VIABLE reasons not to vote Obama. What if someone is a full fledged Republicam--pro life and all? Certainly, they wouldn't be expected to vote Obama and I wouldn't tell them they are wrong in believing what they do. I would just strongly disagree. I have been supported when Steph and I were having a really hard time from a group of lads and, over the years I have been on this list, there have been numerous occasions when someone has sent a few kind words or understood where I have been coming from on some issue or other. It is for this reason I want to share publicly and express thanks for all the kindness and support I am currently receiving from Lieve. As with so many of my Joni experiences, I am amazed by a set of coincidences/synchronicity about my relationship with Lieve, so I just wanted to share it on the forum. Firstly, my Mother is Belgian and I met Lieve at Joni Fest 2003 in at Full Moon in New York state and when I found out she was Belgian, was really surprised. A Belgian woman of my generation passionate about Joni! And we travel across the Atlantic to meet and she even looks a bit like Joni! It was wonderful. In addition, the Belgian part of my life has always been a bit unknown to me for lots and lots of reasons, so meeting Lieve meant a great deal. One thing I did know about my Belgian family was that my great grandmother, Louisa, took my Mum on holiday along the Belgian coast in the early 1930s, and they stayed in a resort called De Panne. They spent a lot of time visiting the military cemeteries all long the coast, trying to find a grave for Louisa's brother, my great, great Uncle, Guillaume Batselier. Guillaume had not returned and had been killed in action in 1914. Through the wonders of the internet and World War 1 forums, this year I have managed to find out that Guillaume was killed in the Battle for the Yser. After very fierce fighting, the sluice gates were opened and, in the inundation, many soldiers were drowned. It is likely that Guillaume disappeared in the waters near a place called Pervijze and was never found. As a consequence of this research, I have been invited to attend the 90th commemorations of the end of World War 1 by the Belgian people I have been in contact with. I am taking a poppy wreath and a ceramic plaque with a photograph of Guillaume in his uniform on it, to lay in his memory. Without Lieve's help, I would not have been able to understand many of the emails I have been sent, nor been able to piece together the story. Lieve is making the trip with Steph and I to the commemorations in Belgium next week and, in an extraordinary co-incidence, we are staying with her in her flat (you guessed it) in De Panne. Lieve, thank you so very, very much for helping me find part of myself and helping my family finally bring Guillaume home. I would ask everyone next Tuesday, November 11th, to remember all victims of all wars everywhere and, in particular, the endless rows of young men lying in the fields of Flanders, With my love and grateful thanks Anita _____ I am using the Free version of SPAMfighter We are a community of 5.5 million users fighting spam. Lieve, thank you so very, very much for helping me find part of myself and helping my family finally bring Guillaume home. I would ask everyone next Tuesday, November 11th, to remember all victims of all wars everywhere and, in particular, the endless rows of young men lying in the fields of Flanders, With my love and grateful thanks Anita B _____B I am using the Free version of SPAMfighter We are a community of 5.5 million users fighting spam. She ran with a busted knee so we are really really proud of her spirit. She just kept going. She did it in 7 and a half hours, not a great time but we think a lot of people would have given up with the pain she went through. If you get a look at her crossing the finishing line with a big big smile on her face, walking, you would never know she had a painful knee. What a trouper. You can see a picture of Joan with her medal on the front page www.joanarmatrading.com As you now know Joan completed the marathon for the Women of the Year Foundation and to date has collectd #27, 936.26. Nothing pops into my head that would be particularly efficient for advertising. I suppose almost any song, strategically placed, could work. I'm not sure if I'd want to hear Joni's songs in commercials. I'm mixed on the use of songs in commercials. A part of me would love to hear Joni when flipping through channels and another part of me thinks that allowing your songs to sell a car or something is a compromise to your art. Again, a part of me, realizes it is a quick and easy way for a songwriter to make money. It is almost a logical way yet another part of me thinks that somebody so willing to put their song (a song they put their heart and soul into hopefully) in a commercial is loses a lot of integrity. I suppose I wouldn't mind a Joni song being put to good use--for an election campaign or a charity or something of that nature. I just wouldn't want to see All I Want selling diapers or anything. Although I have to say I've always thought something about "Urge For Going." When I first heard Crosby & Nash's version (I heard their cover before I heard Joni's original), I thought it would be a good song to advertise a laxative to help with constipation! "I get the urge for going, but I never seem to go!" I know, very silly and childish humor. I can't lie. I thought that the first time I heard the song. :/ - -Monika - --- On Mon, 11/3/08, Cassy wrote: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMQt7ARAqXs Are there any of Joni's songs you think would be good for advertising products? And they have not voted for the Democratic candidate since 1968! That election result is a very good sign. Tuesday is another day of knocking on doors, driving voters, doing whatever it takes to get ALL the Obama supporters to the polls. Then when the sun goes down offering warm drinks, blankets if it's cold out, umbrellas if it's raining and encouragement to wait and vote no matter how long it takes. Spirits are high here! So I have a feeling not much encouragement will be needed. For everyone going to vote... don't wear t-shirts or anything with Obama's picture or logo or anything identifying you as an Obama supporter because "you may influence other people." Same for McCain supporters (although I can't imagine anyone wearing a t-shirt with his grimacing face on it). And no campaign buttons either. Election officials will make you take off the buttons and somehow cover up the Obama logo, or you can't vote. Isn't that weird? I was shocked when I heard that at one of our meetings. That's gotta be some crazy new Repub-passed law! And be sure to take photo ID or at least ID with your name and address that matches the Registrar's records... that's another new Repub law to protect us from all the terrorists who try to vote. I will be so relieved when Barack Obama is our new leader and the humane, smart and not-controlled-by-fear Democrats are back in power.
