That is so cool that you are coming. To ease your mind, I am keeping this wide open. Yes, I will have a contingency plan if we don't get 30 people. I don't think I could ask any higher price than the one calculated for 30. There is plenty of time. I won't be asking for definite commitments until much closer to the event date. When that happens, we'll see what the numbers look like. I will recalculate based on the exchange rates at that time and ask who is willing to pay the asking price. If it turns out to be too expensive for most, I will turn to the alternate plan and offer it up. I will in that event try to keep it up to a comfortable standard. Possibly a camping ground with some basic cabins or something. Thanks for throwing your hat into the ring. I do hope you're not the sole UK representative. I guess at this stage, I'm just asking for people to let me know of their interest so, I can get a general idea of number. Patricia, the owner of Kangaroo Valley Bush Retreat told me on the phone that she would try to knock a little off the price and send me a new quote. I think she forgot that part of our conversation because she has sent me the exact same quote again. I will get in touch with her on Monday and see what she can do. Excitement rises. She is great isn't she? Cool she mentioned this area, she's been here a bunch of times. That Baez song is one Eliza wrote & so she is honored that Joan chose to record it. Eliza, like Joan, has a strong political core to her songwriting. Did she play The Party's Over? I got the metaphor half way through the song when it hit me like a tonne :~} of bricks. The reason politics was so much a part of her banter is probably because many of us who live in the USA feel this election is the most important one we've ever had in our lifetime. Kate Mags >tell me if you've seen eliza and tom in concert. kate bennett, i thought of you as eliza kept mentioning not just california but santa barbara. due to the timing, there was much talk about politics and the upcoming election. as canadians rarely get into that on stage, i found it very interesting that the topic was part of the in between rhetoric. eliza did a gorgeous cover of joan baez' rose of sharon, i've never heard it performed live, so it was a wonderful treat.< ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Nov 2008 07:24:34 -0700 (PDT) From: Bob Muller Subject: No Covers yet but some live stuff for ya OMG - November already? And while I am not a huge fan of her voice, I've always liked her songwriting, her artistic versatility and her engagement for the advancement of social causes, including those of first nations' peoples. And her voice is still great - stong and clear (ahem...). Like Joni, she's very much an artist who blossomed in the 60's. Here is the Joni-related excerpt from the Globe and Mail article : ``After graduating with a teaching degree from the University of Massachusetts in the early sixties, she headed to Greenwich Village to sing in local coffee shops and was spotted by Bob Dylan. He suggested she try out at another venue and two weeks later she had a rave review in The New York Times. (Sainte-Marie did a similar favour for Joni Mitchell, playing the unknown singer's tape to everyone she met -including Elliott Roberts, who became Mitchell's first manager.)`` The complete article can be found here http://www.theglobeandmail.com Just search for Buffy. A few days ago i borrowed 8 records of Leonard Cohen from a senior at the office (which of course i copied). So, i've been listening to those records heavily these days, trying to "learn" how come he becomes one of music world's highest echelon member. So, his music. Well... Isn't his music less accessible than Joni's? Seems like (at first) i can't understand a man in a bass voice and a guitar singing something. The music (with the exception of Death of A Ladies' Man) sounds monotone. I'm a person who enjoys songs from melody first, then the lyric. Death of Ladies' Man easily gets my attention for its "wall of sound" (after all, it's Phil Spector) I'm Your Man comes next, after 3 or 4 playings. The rests, i haven't got them. Well, that's from the 'ear' point of view. Then i watch the lyric carefully. Damn! Damn! They're sooooo sexy. SEXY. SEX-Y. SEXy. SE-XY. s e x y Here his bass voice works. His bass voice adds another sexyness to the already sexy piece of poem/music that'll make a woman in her 30s simply can't refuse a marriage proposal from a man in his 70s who can sing sexily like this. Who needs Justin anyway if you can get Leonard? Oh, i guess i have to learn to sing "I'm Your Man". My dating days is just begun. Rian The Joni Content part: How do you compare Leonard Cohen's music to Joni's? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Nov 2008 17:47:16 -0400 (EDT) From: marie Subject: Re: 50 Reasons to Vote Obama (NJC) Thank you for asking. I think the death tax should be buried. Call it what you want, it's unfair, and I think ridiculous too, in that the deceased has already been taxed many times by the government. Many times over! It is antithetical to a capitalist country. It discourages savings and investments. A good model for us would be Italy, they only tax the deceased at %4. Compare U. S, forty five percent.
