I'd like to thank everyone who gave me feedback about OzFest. This has really helped me to shape it. It seems that organising it back to back with SoCalFest is not the best way to go. It seems some people may find the time for both hard to come by. So, I've decided to push it back to March, 2010. From memory, March is still pretty hot in southeastern Australia. Autumn doesn't really kick in until the end of March, April. My birthday FYI is March 6, so that's how I remember. Unfortunately, this doesn't fit in with Michael Paz but I just have to service as many needs as possible. Michael, I do hope you can find a way to make it in March as well. I am looking at mid March at this stage. Those of you who would like to attend the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, the parade and party are on the first weekend of March but if you want to attend the entire festival, you'll need to come in February. I can now reveal to you the venue for JoniFest Down Under. http:// www.kangaroovalleybushretreat.com.au/ Kangaroo Valley Bush Retreat is a 100 acre retreat at the southeastern corner of the Southern Highlands region of New South Wales. It is at the foot of the mountains and about a ten minutes drive from the coast and beaches. It is at the edge of national park with beautiful waterfalls nearby and pristine bushland. Kangaroo Valley is a tiny historical town and nearby Berry is the quaintest little village you could imagine. There are many alternative lifestylers living in the area and Berry even has a native American craft store of all things. The retreat also has an outdoor cathedral that they say would be perfect for jam sessions/performances. The retreat itself has a lodge that sleeps 24 people with a large communal area and huge kitchen. There are also 8 cabins with various configurations. These are self contained. The choice is your as the price doesn't vary depending on which you choose. They offer self catering or a meal package that is quite reasonable. The price is good too. I enquired about the price for 30 people but it turns out to be one packages price for the entire retreat. AU $13,500 for three days. They can accommodate up to 68 people. That equates to under US$100 per person per night. About US$84 at the current exchange rate. The menu supplied is AU$59 per person per day. At a guess, that would be about US$40. The thing is, it's the same price whether there are 30 people or 2 people. That's for the retreat. The individual price is based on 30 people. The less people, the more expensive. Here's a breakdown of the price: Accommodation (Per person, per day) Meals (Per person, per day) AU: $150 AU: $59 US: $84.60 US: $40.39 UK: #61.95 UK: #24.37 EU: 77.95 EU: 30.66 CA: $122.51 CA: $48.19 The caterer can accommodate varying diets to a degree with advanced notice. They tell me their ingredients are all local and fresh. This is beautiful lush farmland. Dairy country mostly. What I really need now is a general show of hands Even if you're not sure, please let me know if there is a chance you can make it because the number of people will dictate the price for each of us. I need to know if we can get 30 people to keep it at the price above. I will keep you all informed each step of the way and I happy to answer any questions you might have including travel information. Thank you all for your cooperation. The place you have chosen looks absolutely perfect! And the prices seem reasonable. So provided the current financial crisis in Europe and elsewhere doesn't wipe out my savings you can count on me! Actually, March 2010 is even better for me than October 2009, it gives me a little more time to plan and save. And since I have one of those significant birthdays in December 2009, I could ask people to contribute towards making my dream of going to Australia come true instead of giving me other presents. I really, truly want to make the trip, and combined with a Jonifest, it would just have to be one of the highlights of my life! Marion ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Oct 2008 21:04:32 +1100 From: Mark-Leon Thorne Subject: Re: OZ fest 2010 Oh Marion, what a special trip this will be for you. Of course, I am going all out for this. This will be a once in a lifetime experience for me too so, I intend to make this the best JoniFest in history and one that everyone will remember for the rest of their lives. It may be a long, long time before JoniFest comes to Australia again so, I'm pulling out all the stops. Short of having Joni, herself there. You can rest assured that everyone who attends will be well catered for. Every comfort covered. I will be host, tour guide and general servant during the event. I know the effort will be well worth it when I see everyone having the best time ever. I hope March fits in with everyone. If there is a problem with March, please let me know. I want to find the best time for everyone. Isn't that place something? Although I haven't been there, I know the Kangaroo Valley area and it is just gorgeous. It's about 2 - 3 hours drive from Sydney to the south. Nearby is Fitzroy Falls and several other waterfalls, rainforest, beaches and rivers. The place even allows you to catch your own fish in the river. I got a quote by e- mail but then I called them. The woman loves the idea of JoniFest and hinted at a possible further reduction in price. I will be looking into some surprises too. My sister has some high level musical friends and I want her to call in some favours. If you've ever considered a trip to Australia, this is the time. Come one, come all. I'm hoping our New Zealand cousins can pop over for it - - Hell, put down that cow's udder and pack your bags. Of course, I realise it is a much further journey for Europeans and also more expensive but I hope you all see this the way Marion does - a trip of a lifetime. Danilo? Oddmund? Adriano and Licia? Christina and Henning? Bene? (you can save by then). The Brits. We've been invading your country for so long now, come to the antipodes and see what all the fuss is about. Jamie? Lucy? Lieve? Garrett? Chris? I am going to try my hand at making a web site for the occasion. It will be a registration page to enter your details for booking purposes and I will put up links to the retreat, transport, PayPal account and general travel info. 30% needs to be paid but not until about 6 months beforehand. I've now had TWO yard signs stolen. The last one I ordered I gave to a friend who apparently lives in an area where people don't see fit to deny one's freedom of speech. Based on 4 days it's roughly $500 U.S. for the fest and United Airlines seems to have a one-stop flight from Seattle to Sydney for about $1500 U.S. so $2,000 just for travel and Fest. Of course, I could not travel that far for 4 days so I looked at flights spanning a fortnight in mid March. (apparently one cannot book flights more than 333 days in advance on some of the cheap ticket web sites so I had to check prices for 2009 and hope they won't be too much more by 2010. So counting accommodations for the rest of the time (can we arrange to hang out at the venue rather than change to a hotel?) discretionary spending money and body fuel I'm personally looking at around $5,000 multiply that by two so I can share the experience with my husband and $10,000 becomes a fair bit of money for a two-week holiday. Unless things radically improve financially in the next 10 months or so, it's doubtful I would be able to participate this time. Mark, thanks for everything you're doing but I'll have to do this one vicariously. Miller's is ranked nationally as one of the best hamburger joints in the country and it's a great place to eat if you're ever in the area. A couple of years ago, my son, James, my mother and I went to eat burgers at Miller's one night and ran into Jack and Meg along with a couple of their friends, it was actually my mother (now 81 yrs old) who recognized them first. James was a bit shy about speaking to them but decided it was an excellent opportunity and slid on over to their table. He asked if they had a minute to chat with a fan and they were happy to so he spent several minutes at their table jabbering away before getting autographs. Jack's a really genuine guy. When we were leaving I stopped and thanked them for taking the time out of their dining experience to chat with James and they spent several more minutes talking with me. Being respectful of their privacy I passed on the urge to just sit down and join them. This was one of my moms favorite haunts. I went by there the last time I was in Detroit and started to stop in but got side tracked. I remember I went there with my mom for a reunion with her friends that use to work at Sears Roebuck and I was not eating meat at the time. I had been off meat for several years and so when it came time for me to order I ordered a salad and some onion rings and my ma had a fit saying to have a gxx damn burger they are the best in the world and blah blah blah. Anyways to shut her up I had one and while it tasted great but I almost died on the plane trip home to New Orleans. This story made me laugh like a fool. Thanks Cassy I needed it today. It has been one of those tragic days of great loss that I will share another time. Right now I am living in the past and feeling ok. Love Paz P.S. It really is amazing that the moms are in this story. I just love that!
