I don't know that i would class it as more interesting than Kind of Blue. I think i would just see them as very different entities. I think they are both very special albums. If you get the chance to see Patti do a gig, i'd recommend you take it. Her energy and passion are beautiful. This has been the first year since 2000 that i have not seen her in concert, lol, i'm hoping she schedules an Irish concert or one in London, but it looks unlikely. The Fab T-Birds (w/ Stevie's older brother Jimmy Vaughn) opened. The whole thing was phenomenal. Stevie rocked the world. RIP And the best part of it was ... it was FREE! Actually, I was working as a volunteer usher. I was seating ... get this ... the first dozen rows center. It was perfect, except for the fact that I had to wear a tie. I was dancing in the middle of the aisle, and after all, who was going to tell me not to? I was staff! :) Every once in awhile I'd feel someone tapping on my shoulder, a patron looking for their seat, and I'd shine my flashlight in the general direction of their seats, and then go back to boogying. When I'd catch people firing up weed or hash, I'd shine a light in their faces, put on my "stern" face ... and then smile, and say "toll collector" and grab a hit off of whatever they were smoking. It was a gas. And the venue was beautiful (this was just after they'd renovated it). I saw BB King there too. I missed a chance to see the Grateful Dead there, under the same deal: ushering. I'm still kicking myself for that one. And my reason for blowing it off was that I had an exam the next day. Some priorities. Bah. I sure as hell ain't reminiscing about that exam, if you know what I mean. Another standout was Sweet Honey In The Rock in Northhampton, MA, in 1995(?) I've seen Sweet Honey several times, but Northhampton was the first time, and the best. I brought a few friends who weren't familiar with Sweet Honey with me to the show. None of us were prepared for how good it was. And I had listened to them for years and had about 10 of their albums. And I still wasn't prepared. It was a small venue too, I can't remember where (Smith College somewhere maybe?) They had the whole audience singing The Rivers Of Babylon. In harmony! Awesome! I remember reading somewhere that some rapper (from N.W.A., I think) was asked about Sweet Honey in an interview once, and he said, "Those ladies are serious." Indeed. I'm very fond of several Dead and JGB shows, deadhead that I am. JGB at the Philly Spectrum and the Dead in Miami, both in 1989, are favorites, if I had to narrow it down. And if I had to pick one show that I *wish* I had seen? Hendrix, third show at Winterland. Yeah, yeah, I know he played there more than once. But as any serious fan knows, when you say "Hendrix at Winterland", unless you specify otherwise, you're talking about October 10-12, 1968. The early show on the second night is the one I would've liked to have seen. I was actually living in the area at the time, in Vallejo. But, unfortunately, I was only a yearling, and I don't think they let toddlers in to see acid rock concerts. Band of Gypsies, late show, New Year's Eve 1969-70 was a smoker, too. And, while I'm at it, once I get my time machine perfected, I'll probably zip back to catch Janis & Big Brother on a good night at the Avalon. Ooh! And that Nyro show at the Fillmore E, the one that Spread Your Wings And Fly was recorded at. And then I'd simply have to catch Joni in a coffee house somewhere. One Love, David PS I agree with Monika that there's no point in seeing a live act that is a carbon copy of the album stuff. I was seriously into Rush in the 80s back when I was a different person. :) I saw them three times, and I think I saw the same exact show all three times, and it sounded just like the album tracks cranked up really loud. Bah. I won't say they were the worst shows I saw. (That would be Starship, on the We Built This City tour. And, no, I don't really want to talk about it.) But, today, I do consider seeing Rush back then to be a waste of my youth. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Oct 2008 13:58:59 +1100 From: Mark-Leon Thorne Subject: OzFest and SoCalFest Hello fellow Joni fans. I recently hinted at a JoniFest in Australia and have had some very positive feedback about the idea. I never thought it would be viable but it seems that there are plenty of people willing to make the trip so, I went ahead and did some research and have discovered the perfect venue for it and have got some preliminary quotes that will make it financially viable too. I was aware that Dave Blackburn had raised the idea of a JoniFest in the San Diego area but didn't realise that his plans might clash with mine. The fear now is that people might want to attend both but would have to choose between them because people won't be able to afford two JoniFests in the same year. So, before I go ahead with any more research and planning, I need to know if this will prevent people from coming to OzFest. If having the two on in the same year will cause anyone a problem, would you please let me know. I need to know if, going to SoCal JoniFest will prevent you from attending OzFest or vice versa, please send me a message off list or here so, I can get an idea of its viability. If this is the case, I may have to push it back to 2010. My idea was for October, 2009. That is Spring in Australia so, I thought that might be an ideal time, weather wise. It has been suggested to me that many people would like to escape the Northern Hemisphere Winter but, Summer in Australia (most parts) can be uncomfortably hot. At least, I think so. Sometimes temperatures can get up 30-35 degrees C and I'm not sure you'd like to sweat it out. That's why I figured Spring might be better. Everything is open to discussion so, please feel free to give any feedback. Either way, you are all going to LOVE the venue I found and the package they offer. I will reveal the venue once I get some feedback from you all. I will also look into flight packages from each of your countries but that's probably better done from your end. Spring has been a bit mixed this year. We've had quite a bit of rain and temperatures have varied wildly from a heatwave two weeks ago to snow falling in the mountains last week. I have had some great feedback from Lucy Hone on her methods and will be following much of her advice because it seems that Holycombe was a great success. I believe I can make OzFest the most memorable JoniFest ever. The more of you who come, the better this will be (it also makes the package cheaper because there is a set price to book out the entire venue). Trust me, you'll love it. Your feedback will give me a starting point and shape the whole experience. The most important question is; Will having two JoniFests in the same year (same month) prevent you from going to either one? Thanks for your co-operation.
