He delivers like few others can with his intensity. Unless you know something about his stage character I do not know. If you do, please share.≪ I have seen Van on a good night and also on a night when he walked off in a huff after 25 mins, didn't speak to the audience once and did not apologise. He plays here in bcn every year, usually, but I don't want to see him again, in case it's a bad night. I'm sure other people will back this up. Nina Simone was famous for this too. My best concert memories? Taste/Rory Gallagher many times all over the place, especially when I was 14 years old. We went backstage looking for autographs and he gave me my first bottle of Guinness. Gotta love it. Jethro Tull, IoW 1970, Barclay James Harvest, maybe Isle of Wight too, maybe not, but around that time. Amazing orchestral versions of 'Mockingbird' and 'She Said'. Pat Metheny Band, Barcelona, *Speaking of Now* tour. Mahavishnu Orch, @ Knebworth (83-ish?), Herbie Hancock/Wayne Shorter Quartet 1995, Barcelona, Wayne Shorter Quartet, 2007, Barcelona. Allman Brothers Band (after Duane's death), their only gig ever in the UK, I think. Dickie Betts did an amazing job on guitar. Pogues in Birmingham, early 80s,: Most disappointing gigs? U2 and Norah Jones, both in Barcelona, U2 on Achtung tour, Norah after first album. mike in bcn np Alan Stivell - Kimiad ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Oct 2008 09:33:21 -0400 From: Victor Johnson Subject: Re: best live concerts ever NJC Funny, I saw U2 around that same time period (in Chapel Hill) and was also disappointed. Some key element seemed to be missing. On the other hand, I saw them on Unforgettable Fire and it was incredible. The venue, the MTS Centre, one of those huge spaces, but it was rockin'. There were many rumours from previous nights that Van was not involved at all, that he kept walking off stage, watching it from the wings. What he DID do was just that, but it wasnt arrogance at all, it was his sheer and obvious appreciation for his band mates, to me, it looked like he was gettting out of their way so that they could have the lime light, and on more than one occasion. He was ON and then some. mags i exist as i am, that is enough ~walt whitman~ __________________________________________________________________ Connect with friends from any web browser - no download required. Way back when, he could be so "in his cups" while performing that it was a crap shoot whether he would be INSPIRED & GREAT, or just a stumbling, confused wreck. Don't get me wrong, I am Van Morrison's biggest fan. A great songwriter. A sensational rhythm & blues singer. A truly heartfelt interpreter of Celtic & other folk music Not to mention, a decent saxophone player. It's just that I have seen him so often, I was bound to catch him on a few "off nights." PayPal would work for me (or if you have another idea, I'm willing to hear it). Please reply OFF-LIST! Someone who was there, speak up! I'm sure he did a couple of Joni tunes.) I've got a couple of his CDs (Ones and Zeroes and Radio Plastic Jennifer) and I really like them. He's a great musician and he has a weird and wonderful sense of humour, at least, I hope so, unless I'm hearing his lyrics all wrong. I got an email from CD Baby announcing his new one "1369 Lights". You can hear samples there, or at his website: http://www.bryanthomas.com/ > Hi Catherine - > > Because you bought the "BRYAN THOMAS: Ones and > Zeros" CD, I thought > you'd like to be the first to know we just added the > NEW CD to CD Baby > today: > > BRYAN THOMAS: 1369 Lights > http://cdbaby.com/cd/thomasb5 > > Click that link to hear the sound samples and buy it if you > like it. > It's in stock ready to ship. > > "1369 Lights" is the new album from soul rocker > Bryan Thomas. > Here's a wee bit of Joni mention, from the blurb at CDBaby: Cleopatra Joanz plays the bass guitar. Her birth certificate says "Roberta Joan Anderson" but these days even her mama calls her Cleo. Love this guy and I think some of you will too. ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2008 #264 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe -------
