Not sure how my brain had involved you in it in the first place - my apologies! So I will have a truly nonsensical shirt to wear, it seems. It was Joni. I can't remember what interview it was and from what period... no I do... it was the DED 'unplugged' session where Joni is talking to an English interviewer in London and she's also playing songs from DED on piano and guitar in a London theatre. She was asked about her voice and why does she think people like it.... Or something like that... The answer she gave was because it was her particular 'awk'... amongst the millions of penguins in the Antartic, 'paired' penguins find each other because of their particular 'awk - awk - awk'. And we like Joni's 'awk', we're drawn to it. Awk for us Joni!!!! 2008/10/23 Mark Scott Ok, so what does 'awk joni' mean or signify? I saw k d lang and the reclines at about that time at what was then the Seattle Coliseum (now Key Arena, former home of the much-bemoaned lost-to-Oklahoma City Sonics). She opened for Dwight Yoakum with her hair in some kind of crazy mohawk-like do, boots wrapped up in duct tape with a long black skirt and top. I was bowled over by this woman's range and voice. The power of it seemed to bend her body and make her sway. Quirky as she was, I predicted she would become a star. No way that incredible voice was going to trail off into obscurity. > Mags who feels a lot like Tawanda these days ;-) > You go Gur-rl! Must be that I saw many of the same shows during those tours. I've seen Joni just once I think it was 1972 - maybe 73 - Saratoga, NY - the MoA tour. I loved that show. She did two sets - I was in awe. Some shows that have really impressed me: Rickie Lee (opening act Lyle Lovett - His Large Band Tour - this is what turned me on to Lyle) sometime in the 90s - Saratoga, NY .I've seen Lyle many times and he never disappoints. Sinead O'Conner (with World Party as her opening act - this is what turned me on to World Party) sometime in the 90s - Saratoga, NY. Hank III - what a chunk of American music. He said at the beginning of his second set -- "this is where half the audience walks out" ... and he was right -- hard-core, half the folks I was with left. But was this a great show! He has his grandfather's charisma maybe 2000? 2001 Saratoga Winners Yarn - Bearsville Theathre - Woodstock, NY 2007 - If you don't know this group - find out about 'em JamFest - Mariaville NY 2007 Phobe Snow - Albany NY 2008 Lucinda Williams - Rosewood Ballroom NYC 1999. I've seen Lucinda many times - I just loved this setting it was perfect for her at the time. John Prine - Albany NY 2003? Michelle Shocked - Schenectady NY 2005? great ... great ... free ... did I mention great? She is quite an arranger. Clancy Brothers - Albany in the 90s - Laurie Anderson - Schenectady in the 90s. A fantastic show. I dragged many friends to her next show (at RPI in Troy,NY) the next year because I was so taken by her Schenectady show. Turns out this one was in a lecture hall ... was mostly spoken word and video (She did a nice piece on Bruce Springsteen's defense of 2 Live Crew's rap ). My musical friends were not impressed. Joan Armatrading - 2007 - The Egg ... Albany. This woman can play the guitar - no one ever mentions that. She takes care of business. Asleep At the Wheel - a couple of times - including a house party in the 90s (Little Falls NY) Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays at JB Scott's in Albany early 80s Emmylou Harris - Albany 2007. If she does Save the Last Dance for Me - it's worth the admission. I also saw her in Saratoga with Jerry Jeff Walker in the early 80s. I actually went because of Jerry Jeff - wasn't as familiar with her music. Jerry Jeff - a bit intoxicated. Emmylou - sweet. Phil Hornsby and Ricky Skaggs - Troy Music Hall 2007. Phil on the house Steinway - he was having some fun. This was a terrific show - who would have guessed. Super Freak works better in performance than as a recording. Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense Tour - 1989ish? Saratoga. Someone else mentioned this tour. Ate a bag of mushrooms just before the show - good move. Spent the show on my feet (as did the rest of the audience) - Danced the night away at the 288 on Lark Street afterwards (they played all of Speakling in Tongues that night). Truly the best example of live music during that era. Any band from Nigeria (and I've seen several). The women who dance at these shows move parts of their bodies that I never before noticed on a woman. Zimbabwae music is equally as good, but doesn't move the same way. I've never seen Leonard Cohen but would love to. Am a big Van Morrison fan (at least 30 of his CDs) but don't know if I'd want to see him live. He might burst my bubble on an off night. **************Play online games for FREE at Games.com! All of your favorites, no registration required and great graphics b check it out!
