I would have loved to see both of them. Bette used to tour Australia quite a bit back in the day. Elton too. I would have loved to have seen that wonder show he did in Melbourne with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. I have been a total slacker when it comes to going to concerts. Maybe because I haven't had the money when they were touring or maybe because I hate to go out alone and nobody was interested in going with me. I can count on one hand the number of concerts I've seen. The first was Cher (amazing show, very theatrical). Next was Mike Oldfield - a very shy person. I was given last minute tickets to David Bowie's, Serious Moonlight show and went alone. Excellent. Then there were one or two small, intimate performances. Deborah Conway and Tidas at Tilly's in Canberra was wonderful and I was in awe of David Bridie down the road at the Annandale. As I've expressed here before, I will be kicking myself till the day I die that I missed Joni's only performance at the Sydney Opera House and my best friend went and hated it. He dissed the whole show and reaffirmed his dislike of Joni. Unbelievable. What really blew me away was the fact that much of his own philosophies on life are so similar to Joni's. I really thought he'd relate. His words exactly were, "She was like a walking Vogue cover". He claimed that she didn't relate to the audience at all, came out on stage, performed the songs and left without a word. I just find that hard to believe. His impression of Joni Mitchell was that she was self absorbed, impatient and full of herself. Go figure. I did see Leonard Cohen in 1984, great show but looong, and the Kinks in the seventies plus some less known bands, and as far as I remember, they were alright. Like Mark, I missed my chance to see Joni, for me it was the Isle of Wight festival that I could have gone to but didn't. I did buy two of her concert dvs, Shadows and Light and Painting with words and music. SAL was/is not a favourite of mine. Joni appears rather aloof, as if her heart is not in her performance. She hardly addresses the audience, and she often has her back turned on them. She does perform her songs as professionally as could be expected but no more. I prefer PWWAM. The audience is much smaller, Joni connects with the audience, tells stories and jokes, dances, sings and plays beautifully. I watch that dvd a lot! To me, that is the greatest live act. Thread over. >>> I'm not so sure they're the "Greatest live acts" but my most memorable concerts are, to me, the greatest. I've been extremely fortunate to have seen Joni every time she played in the Detroit area and one year I saw her twice due to moving to Dallas, I got to see her twice on that tour and she ranks right up there among the best. I have to say she was not always at her best during live performances though, the 2000 symphony show was lovely for the companionship of the mini-fest but her plane had been delayed, she was in a foul temper and musically it wasn't one of her best in my opinion. In no particular order - as they come to mind... Jethro Tull's "Thick as a Brick" tour was fabulous. It was a performance in every sense of the word because of the costuming and little vignettes relating to the newspaper cover of the album. The Tubes "Completion Backward Principle" tour was also excellent for similar reasons to Jethro Tull's concert. Costumes, vignettes, Sue Sue Sushi in her chong sam twirling and dancing during the song of the same name among other fantastic visual displays. And the color was reminiscent of going to a ballet, the lighting was superb for this show. Emerson Lake and Palmer: musically one of the tightest shows I've ever seen and drums, need I say more? The Who at a very intimate show in Detroit at the Masonic Temple, Detroit 1979 (a night or two after the Cincinnati concert tragedy). It was the Quadrophenia movie tour and a very moving, sort of somber evening. The band was excellent and made a couple of references to festival seating being an abomination and that they would never play that type of show again. Great music; real people on stage, not the personas I'd seen them portray in other shows. On reflection they were shell-shocked. Pink Floyd on a couple of tours... pyrotechnics and loud, exceptional musical performances. At one of the shows (don't ask me the year - it was during my drug-hazed coke years) I remember an airplane on tracks above the stage that crashed, stage right. I saw Elton John only once live in about 1972 or '73 and had a great time, the glasses changes were as much a part of the show back then as the music. 1972 Rolling Stones tour with Billy Preston. My prom date, who was deaf, knew I loved the Stones and bought us tickets through a source he had at Cobo Hall in Detroit. He was a wrestling photographer and knew all the people so we had third row tickets. Billy Preston stole the show. Bette Midler introducing Barry Manilow as a brand new artist who performed her warm up and came back during her show to do a couple of numbers with her - this was the tour she dressed as a mermaid in a seashell and had a huge swing center-stage. The Freddy Jones Band - tons of times - This band puts on a hell of a show live my favorite was their record release show at the Vic in Chicago where Sheryl Crow played as the warm-up. John Mellencamp - I've seen him live over 25 times and never get tired of all the hits all the time. John puts on one of the rockingest shows and the musicianship among his band members is awesome. The violin is a big part of his music and his former and current violinists (Lisa Germano and Miriam Sturm respectively) contribute hugely to his success live. He did a tour several years ago (2000 I think) where he played in the middle of the day in large cities across the eastern and Midwest states for free, they called it "The Good Samaritan Tour." He would show up with a tiny little amp, his acoustic guitar two relatively unknown musicians on violin and accordion and play his heart out a la woody Guthrie. I got to see four of those shows and the crowds just kept getting bigger from city to city. By the time he hit Chicago they shut the surrounding streets down and had mounted police for crowd control. Jesse Jackson's limo entourage was stuck in traffic for hours. I've done front row three times for John's shows and he always has interesting lead-in bands. There are so many live shows I've enjoyed. I used to go see Bob Seger, Catfish Hodge, Ted Nugent, Mitch Ryder and a variety of other bands for $1.00 admission in the gym at Aquinas high school in the 70s. The Grandee Ballroom in Detroit (which I wasn't allowed to go to but did anyway) to see Iggy and the Stooges and Edgar and Johnny Winter shows whenever I could get a ride. very early 80's when I'd go to Austin Texas on 6th to see Stevie Ray Vaughan and/or his brother Jimmy perform and the Oak Cliff Bar for a couple of dollar admission to see one or the other of them play. The Texas State Fairgrounds in Dallas to see them both on the same billing and where the drunks behind us on our bench-style seating leaned over and blew chunks into my date's hair. (chuckling at the memory) Live music has been such a big part of my life but thanks for the trip down memory lane. I think Joni's demeanor changes with the size of the venue. She seems to be much more comfortable and communicative in an intimate setting and less likely to be so in a large arena. The Joni/Dylan/Van concerts at the Gorge rank up there at the top of my list of live performances. All 3 performers were in top form. But the 'Both Sides Now' concert with full orchestra and Herbie Hancock sitting in for one song at the Concord Pavillion was more special in some ways because we were closer to the stage and it was all Joni. She seemed more relaxed and a bit more chatty than at the Gorge, although, the Concord Pavillion is not a small venue. Also the crowd was much more respectful than at the Gorge where people talked and got up and down all during Joni's performance. I have to agree with Jerry about Bette Midler. I've only seen her once way back in the 80s on her 'No Frills' tour. I have rarely seen a performer throw themselves into a performance as much as Bette did during that concert. She was incendiary. One of my top live performance experiences. I saw Hendricks and Ross at Jazz Alley, a club in Seattle. Very intimate setting. The two masters of vocalese were both in their 70s at the time but their singing was as precise, spot-on and as energetic as ever. Phenomenal show and we were sitting right in front of the stage. I've seen Rickie Lee Jones 3 times now. The best was at the Moore theater during her 'Evening of My Best Day' tour. We were 2nd row center and Rickie had a fantastic ensemble of musicians backing her. A natural high walking out of that one. Emmylou Harris at the Pier is another high point for me. I've seen her twice at that particular venue which is no longer in use for concerts. It was on a pier on the Seattle waterfront. So you were surrounded by water on 3 sides and the Seattle skyline was on the 4th side. The 2nd Emmylou concert I saw there was the most memorable. It was after the release of 'Red Dirt Girl' and she had Spyboy accompanying her. Lots of songs from both 'Wrecking Ball' and 'Red Dirt Girl' with some gems from her back catalogue thrown in. And Dave Matthews surprised the crowd by appearing at the end of the concert to duet with Emmylou on 'My Antonia'. Not sure how I would rank them but those are my top 'live act' experiences. There are a lot of great performers that I have never seen perform live so I can't draw from a long list. But those are the best of what I have been able to experience over the years. > > Marion, who just missed another concert. The Moody Blues play > Copenhagen > today but I got news of this too late, tickets were already sold > out. I saw The Moody Blues at the Gorge with an orchestra about 10 years ago. It was a good concert but the sound didn't seem very well balanced to me. I'm not sure that a large, outdoor venue was the best setting accoustically for the blend of electric instruments with traditional orchestral instruments. The sound has to be pretty loud to reach the people sitting at the back towards the top of the natural amphitheatre. We were seated in the reserved seats on the 'floor' in front of the stage, and the orchestra was miked so it seemed too loud and somewhat distorted. Still, experiencing 'Nights in White Satin' live is something I will never forget. But those are > the best of what I have been able to experience over the years. > Just thought of a few I left out of my list. Talking Heads performed their 'Stop Making Sense' show at the Seattle Arena before the film was released. It was amazing. David Byrne walked onto a bare stage at the beginning with a guitar and a boom box and performed 'Psycho Killer'. As the show went on, different parts of the band were brought on stage on moving platforms. There were projected images of words and pictures over the band and the performances were phenonmenal. Some songs from The Tom Tom Club spin-off thrown in as well. I saw 'The Pretenders at the same venue in the same year, touring after the release of 'Learning to Crawl'. Chrissie and all were in top form and it was an excellent concert. A great band with a great front woman, all in their prime, tearing it up. Back when I was in college around 1973 or so, I went to the Iowa State Fair, of all places, with my parents and sister. We saw Liza Minelli there performing on a stage set up on a racetrack. We were sitting in a grandstand. Liza was riding on the success of the film 'Cabaret'. She was young, enchanting and at the peak of her talent. The crowd loved her and it was a great show in a place you wouldn't expect it. (a live album exists of a similar show.) it was unbelievable. i'm sure my mouth was agape the entire time. i had previously seen the bulgarian women's chorus on its own, and that show ranks way up there, too. the trio bulgarka did some incredible background voices for kate bush. i've always wanted to hear them behind joni.... between her own harmonic dissonance and theirs....whew. it would have to be mind-blowing...in the best possible way.... :-) - ----- Original Message ----- From: owner-joni-digest@smoe.org (JMDL Digest) Date: Sunday, October 19, 2008 2:05 Subject: JMDL Digest V2008 #256 To: joni-digest@smoe.org > > JMDL Digest > Sunday, October 19 > 2008 Volume 2008 > : Number 256 > > > > ========== > > TOPICS and authors in this Digest: > -------- > joe six pack > NJC [Mags ] > Once > NJC [Mags ] > Greatest live > act [Monika Bogdanowicz ] > bruce cockburn tribute in toronto includes lori cullen of > two grey rooms fame NJC ? I didn't know it was Laura Nyro's birthday...how old would she have been? I adored her...every album. What a sadness not having her in our world. Aahhh..the best live concert???
