Six-pack HI... absolutely NJC, here are a few odd Qs about US politics: Could the six-pack in Joe six-pack refer to abdominal muscles? The hockey-mums are mums who cheer when their kids play hockey, right...? Asks the linguist who was equally puzzled by these references. Another question I'd like to ask: do any of you think that maybe McCain no longer WANTS to win the elections? Given that he has possibly one of the dumbest persons in US politics by his side, and has had to appeal to some of the lowest instincts in US voters recently, probably because of her negative influence? Seeing his reactions to that woman who claimed that Obama was an arab and a terrorist, I was thinking that maybe he is getting cold feet. Seriously. Bene ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Oct 2008 08:59:18 -0400 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: Re: NJC! Six-pack Absolutely not. No way, no how. Refers to a blue-collar guy who drinks beer, watches football, puts a Support The Troops magnet on his pick-up truck, that guy. Nothing wrong with any of those things btw. Attending the games, as well as hauling their kids and sometimes others' kids, bringing snacks & drinks, and cheering rabidly for their team. I'm sure that Patti can fill in some other details. I certainly don't - he's just helpless to know how to do it, and probably unable to in a year when Bush has so tarnished the Republican Party. I said from the get-go that the Republicans knew that they were going down (though not without a fight and not without trying everything but the kitchen sink). Lucky for us, NOTHING he has tried has worked; blame him, blame his campaign staff. I know that most people outside the US don't understand how someone like George Bush can get elected President - twice, and how someone as inept as Sarah Palin can generate so much excitement. Bene, maybe the next time you come to the states you should hang out in South Carolina as opposed to California - THEN you would have a better understanding. But Six-pack (or Sixpack) in "Joe Sixpack" refers to a six-pack of beer. Joe Sixpack is a term used to describe a regular working man. In most cases I've seen it used, it is derogatory and means a guy who goes home from work and is only interested in drinking beer and watching TV (most likely the sports network.) Hockey moms are those people who seem to exist for nothing but driving their kids to hockey practice, cheering them on at their games (and sometimes encouraging them to beat the crap out of some kid on the other side.) Palin likely means this to appeal to the average working people out there, but elitists like me never really trust those people who claim to represent the average working Joe. __________________________________________________________________ Yahoo! Six-pack Thanks for the clarifications Bob! It is true that people here are at a loss at understanding how Bush got re-elected, but then Austria until a few days ago had Juerg Haider, France has Le Pen - these two arent presidents, but Italian in fact has given over democracy to Berlusconi, and we have one Pia Kaersgaard whose entire party, the third-biggest in the country, is beyond my understanding. The public opinion has changed quite a lot in recent years, and what I used to think was some sort of humanistic common ground seems to be washing into a sea of self-righteousness here. Anyhow, I was thinking that although Mccain wants to win surely he has noticed that things could get really embarrassing for him with Palin by his side (even though she doesn't blink), and not just that, but also really difficult. After all, taking America though a financial crisis and a war is a pretty demanding task, and even Mccain must have one or two moments when he thinks about his own mortality and whatever is going to happen if all power is left to Palin. Anyhow, you are probably right Bob, and I guess there is no point in going on about this... I just like to make my point twice thats all.... I'm with you Michael. Count me among those who absolutely love this album. I keep a list of "perfect" records, and by that I mean, songs where the recording, the musicianship, singing, and the tune itself are all unimpeachable. It's not a long list, but "Edith and the Kingpin" from HOSL is on it. Wouldn't it be great if Joni went out on tour, and did the entire album live? I know it'll never happen. I just saw that Van Morrison is doing all of "Astral Weeks" sometime in the near future. Ah, we can dream....
