Joni could never have stopped after her first six albums... she was destined to do more. The fact that Joni is relatively unknown by some people today while adored by hordes of others is testimony to her artistic status. (NJC) The wonderful Mr. Les Irvin will be visiting Topsfield for the weekend of October 31 and it would be great to get together with anyone that is in (or would like to make themselves be in) the area. Unfortunately, the only night I have free because of my own gigs, is on Halloween night. Please come join us, one and all!! RSVP to me here and let me know if you're coming and what you'd like to bring for a potluck item for dinner. WHOOO HOOOO!!!! Mini Jonifest!!!!!! I just need to point out for the record that this discussion has not been a debate with large numbers on each side. It has basically been one person (for the most part, anyway) writing several anti-HoSL posts a day, which could give the illusion of HOSL being unpopular. I'm not saying this makes him wrong, only that to imply there's some sort of big split or controversy regarding the merits of this album, always rated high here, would be inaccurate. There's nothing wrong with not loving every Joni album equally. I'm not a big fan of Shine, for example. (Yet, somehow, I manage to refrain from attacking it daily. Amazing restraint, huh?) ;) I'll just add that it's my favorite Joni album overall (the high points of Hejira are higher for me, but I find HoSL more solid). Allow me to explain the logic...If I'm going to buy a CD I'm expecting to pay around $15 bucks US tops. Many of the CD's available only in Japan cost twice that much. Buying them from CDJapan is the cheapest source I've found - the same CD's purchased through other venues cost more. Nod your head if you understand me now. I love it all. But from 'Upstairs by a Chinese Lamp' all the way to the last note of 'Christmas in My Soul' it never ceases to amaze me or leave me emotionally devastated. Yes, the references to the Black Panthers and the Chicago 7 do date it. But the message of the 'missing love that rings through the world on Christmas' and the stirring call to do something about it in 'now the time has come to fight/laws in the Book of Love burn bright/people you must win for thee/ America, her dignity/for all the high court world to see' - well all of that is more relevant than ever. The live 'Spread Your Wings and Fly' follows 'Christmas' up with 'Save the Country'. And there you have what's at stake in the upcoming US election in a musical coupling recorded 37 years ago. 'Eli' has a very special memory associated with it and I love it but for some reason I don't play it that often. Still have to say that it's a brilliant work. Totally and uniquely Nyro at her very best. 'Lucky', 'Poverty Train', 'Lonely Women', 'Eli's Comin', 'Emily' - great songs all. Recently I had an appetite for 'Gonna Take a Miracle' and 'The First Songs' (never owned it under the title 'More Than a New Discovery'). So I listened to both quite a few times on my commutes for a few days. The thought occurred to me that it would have been wonderful if Laura had recorded 4 or 5 more albums with LaBelle of the same type of material. I think 'Gonna Take a Miracle' is miraculous. The vocal blends are wonderful and there are some great arrangements of classic songs. 'I Met Him on a Sunday', 'The Bells', 'Desiree', 'The Wind' - all are sheer bliss. And I think my favorite versions of 'Dancing in the Street', 'You've Really Got a Hold on Me' and 'Spanish Harlem' (yes I like this one even better than Aretha's - is that sacrilege?) are on this record. 'The First Songs' was my first (and, for many years, my only) Laura Nyro album. I have to admit that my curiousity about Laura mainly came from the covers I had heard of her songs by the likes of The Fifth Dimension, Barbra Streisand and Blood, Sweat and Tears. Although I would agree that the arrangements on this record are not always ideal, there are some wonderful surprises on it. I love 'Lazy Susan' and I think 'Buy and Sell' is truly a great song. Has anyone ever covered that one? What an amazing lyric and wonderful melody. And the ballads 'I Never Meant to Hurt You' and 'He's a Runner' are beautiful and beautifully sung. While there are some songs on 'New York Tendaberry' that I like, for the most part I really don't care for it. Just my opinion. Her singing sounds strained and screechy on some songs and some of the material is beyond my powers of appreciation or comprehension. My shortcoming, I am sure. Although I own some of Laura's other records, I'm somewhat ashamed to admit that I am not familiar enough with them to comment on them. None of the others ever caught at my heart like: 1. Christmas and the Beads of Sweat 2. Eli and the 13th Confession 3. Gonna Take a Miracle 4.
