I spent last night reliving the wonderful experience at Holycombe, but, Kenny, you are so right about the quality of Dave and Robin's performances. They were and are simply wonderful. What's a truly dreadful loss on the download(to me) was Robin and Dave's rendition of Both Sides Now - well, I haven't found it yet. It was a fantastic re-working of that ol' lounge lizard that brought new meaning and intensity to the song. Can you believe I am finding the nerve to ask for more of them? Yeah, folks, but that's how good they are. I can't get enough. I cannot get over the incredible amount of work that has gone in to producing this for us. I am almost dumbstruck by the labour of love and hours and hours that must have gone in to making it sound so good. Dave Blackburn, thank you SO much. It's such a wonderful, wonderful gift. These people even have the NERVE to do the jazz tunes and the unmitigated gall to do a FANTASTIC rendition of each and every one. I'm insomniac and have the habit of waking up at 4:00 or 4:30 a.m. frequently and lately I've been keeping the i-pod by the bed so I can put on the headphones and listen, sometimes with the hope of falling back to sleep. But the music was so captivating that I didn't fall asleep at all, but I still got up this morning feeling more refreshed than usual. And of course, the music is good but the quality of the recording itself is also superb. I don't think I've listened to even half of the stuff yet, so there are plenty more treats in store. > Dave Blackburn, thank you SO much. But i guess i won't sleep tight if i don't babble my thoughts about The Hissing of Summer Lawns. If someone asked my comment about Joni's best albums, last year, then i'd include Hissing on the tops. But now, the album is not there anymore. Not because now i don't like THOSL. But because i later found that her another works are better, in quality. (it took a long time for me to understand Hejira, For The Roses, and Turbulent Indigo). But THOSL is still on my top 10 though. In my opinion, the lyric of THOSL is much better than the music. Simplest example: The Jungle Line. Joni's so brave creating a song that sounds not like her. But, for me, the sound of the song just doesn't work. Had she arranged the song in another way, sure the result would be different. I'm thinking about Herbie/Leonard Cohen's version of Jungle Line (on River album). For me, that's so perfect. The music beautify the already-good lyric. In THOSL case, the opposite. Same with Shadow and Light (the song, not the album). The lyric is good. Poetic. But the synth is like (i'm quoting Rolling Stones magazine) a long solemn fart. Another problem with THOSL is its first single : In France They Kiss on Main Street. There's something that lost in the song. I don't know what. But Joni paid that with a very great/powerful version of IFTKOMS on Shadow and Light (the live album) that made the album version sounds like a demo. IFTKOMS studio version rarely appears on my playlist. But the live version is always there. But THOSL is definitely doesn't deserve to be trashed. It's a good album still. Let's think about the gloomy yet bar-light-glittery Edith and Kingpin, Sweet Bird (which makes me melt like cheese on pizza), Don't Interrupt The Sorrow with its lots of references, Boho Dance, and of course THOSL (the song) that includes some of greatest irony on Joni's songs (He put up a barbed wire fence to keep out the unknown/ And on every metal thorn, just a little blood of his own) (Chippendale where nobody sits in) Ah, gotta continue my work. Rian PS. I went to Diana Krall's concert 2 days ago. I'll write about it perhaps. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Oct 2008 08:02:49 -0700 (PDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: Crisis, njc - --- On Tue, 10/7/08, do9eatdo9@yahoo.com wrote: > Don't you find this US economic crisis frightening? > > I have a trauma with economic crisis that struck my country > last decade. > > So, good luck to you all, Americans. > > > Rian > PS. I was starting my senior year in high school. The local (KNAK and KRSP from Salt Lake City, Utah) radio stations played "Night In the City" and "Cactus Tree" a few times when STAS was released, so my friends and I sought it out. It has been pure love of all things Joni since then. (Hubba twice!) I still have that album and all of her LPs up to "DOG EAT DOG". I also went back and bought her entire catalog on CD as they were released. In fact, the first two CDs I ever purchased, when that medium arrived in 1984, were "Court and Spark" and Van Morrison's "Moondance". (This is very telling of where my tastes in music relish the mustard, to mix some metaphors.) There are also a few commercial cassettes in there as well. I never had reel-to-reel nor 8-track. When I married my fellow Joniphile, Mrs. Bonneville, our Joni collections merged, so we have duplicates of the early albums. (I have related here before the story of my proposal to the future Mrs. Bonneville right after we listened to "Blue" and Donovan's "For Little Ones" in my apartment at Snowbird Ski Resort in 1976.) We have 58 copies of Joni's works in the three formats. I don't do bootlegs, so the collection royalties have all gone to Joni. I am now busy with transferring the Joni and Van collections to Mrs. Bonneville's iPod. I have faithfully purchased all of her albums as they were released, and have not been less than thrilled with each and every one of them.
