(TONE: Just throwing the lightness on these things) Going through the pile of papers on my desk so I can recycle/toss stuff (craving simplicity), I came across an article about a communications professor and her work.... and then along came Joni! ******* Tafoya is also interested in the physiological effects of communication. In one study, she examined how peoples stress levels were reduced by expressing affection through writing a letter. The participants cortisol levels, heart rates, blood pressure, and blood glucose levels were measured. We found that participants stress levels were significantly reduced when they wrote a letter of affection to somebody they cared about, she says. source: http://www.advance.uconn.edu/2008/080929/08092909.htm ******* I want to knit you a sweater Want to write you a love letter I want to make you feel better I want to make you feel free I want to make you feel free.... Ha. Joni not only made the person she was writing about feel better, she made herself feel better! Now I'm laughing, imagining myself taking a class with this professor. I'd be raising my hand and bringing Joni into the discussion. (And probably very quickly getting the reputation as the Joni nutcase in the class. Class Dancing Clown, Muller!) Here's another possible Joni scenario: "The interpersonal communication course includes an examination of identity, attraction, and love, as well as jealousy and infidelity." Raising my hand encore une fois: "Yes! That's just what Joni Mitchell does. She examines all these things! Why, in her 2000 BSN album she examines the whole trajectory of romantic love. Professor, do you know Joni Mitchell? I think you'd really like her. About jealousy, she sang: 'The jealousy and the greed is the unravelling. I tell you it's the unravelling! It undoes all the joy that could be.' Don't you agree?" Ha. Who needs higher education when we've got Joni? ; ) Everything I Need To Know I Learned In Joni'sGarden. Bon weekend, and Go Joni! Go Obama! Go Red Sox! Go Vince's Sox! Go Huskies -- beat them beach Tar Heels! and finally: Puck Falin and her goon hockey mom schtick and maverix politix! (Wink, wink.) Palin is a pinup with platitudes. It is still shocking to me to believe, now that we've gotten to know her more, that she is actually a VP nominee. Her voice is so grating. I watched some of the (recorded) debate with the sound turned off (ha just like she watched Tina Fey!). It was interesting to watch her face without the sound- there is a cold hard ugliness that distorts her physical attractiveness that I hadn't quite noticed before. So beautiful! I'm so happy they had that -- for lack of better words -- fantabulous opportunity and time together. Precious! I was so moved by how Joni said: "Oh, Wally. I wish I could make you feel better." Bless them both for all they have done for this community and grant them eternal peace. So many losses lately. Keep the hugs going round and round. In August 2000 Michele and I were privileged to attend a performance by singer (and Joni fan) Carla Helmbrecht at the Top of the Mark in San Francisco. We arranged to meet Jim, his friend Andrew and old-time jmdler Leslie Mixon there. It was a wonderful evening, in a very classy venue, with delightful company. A pleasant memory to look back upon at a sad time. I believe he finally became too ill himself to continue. I don't know this for a fact but that seems to be the way I remember things going down. I met Jim and visited his home in San Francisco. I believe he was living with a partner named Andrew at that time. This was when I attended Joni's BSN concert in Concorde in 2000. Leslie & Steve Mixon were my hosts and we stopped by Jim's on the way to the concert. Leslie was friends with both Wally and Jim. Jim seemed to be a very energetic, warm, intelligent person when I met him. His passing is a great loss indeed to this old world and certainly a loss to those of us here who came together mainly because of Joni, then because of Les. But Wally and Jim certainly played a large part in the fact that this community exists. Before Les took over the website and combined it with the JMDL website, the two entities were inextricably intertwined. Wally said there was nothing on the web about Joni back when he & Jim started building the original website. We all owe them both a great deal. Michael, you have just about answered it for me, though. These two characters are indeed 2 of Joni's most intriguing to me. But there is one more that I have been hesitant to mention partly because of some of the sad news we've had lately, partly because I wonder if it reveals something morbid about my personality. This might be a question for Sharon as well. The woman who drowned herself mentioned in 'Song For Sharon' has always been a big question mark for me. Maybe this would not be something appropriate to ask Sharon about. I would certainly not expect a name or too much specific information. But I would like to know if this is a reference to a real person and a real incident. The circumstances are perhaps best left to speculation. Joni seemed to think so - 'She was just shaking off futility or punishing somebody'. Guesses at most there, emotions and abstractions. There is nothing like it. What they did was brilliant foresight that no one else has caught up tp yet. We are deeply blessed by their vision, their work, their dedication, their love, and their personalities of warmth, welcome, joy, and acceptance. There is nothing like the JMDL and Joni.com and we are blessed and honored and lucky that we have this wonderful karmic coming together which does all that the joni.comand jmdl do.
