I think you'll love it here. I first encountered Joni's lyrics and music in early 1970, and she has continued to fascinate, challenge, comfort and help me become wiser ever since. Living in Europe, I never did associate her with Californian beaches, though. With her Canadian background, a Scandinavian comparison was closer at hand. Kind of like the cover of FTR, the landscape on that cover is very similar to parts of Norway and Sweden. Anyway, great to have you around, and I am looking forward to your postings! I get the feeling that while some of you assign positive meanings to the term, it is usually used derogatively. I am correct? Anyhow, I don't like the sound of it so I think I would prefer to use other words to describe Joni's songs. Don't get me wrong, Hunter is not my favourite Joni song but I like Blue better now with a full complement of songs that were intended for it. Mark in Sydney PS RIP Rob Guest - an icon of Australian musical theatre. Rob holds the worldwide record of playing the lead in Phantom of The Opera for more than 2,000 performances. He was also well known for Les Miserables and was playing the lead in Wicked until he suffered a massive brain hemorrhage on Tuesday night and died in hospital. I hope he receives a posthumous Mo Award (Australia's version of the Tony Awards). Thanks for your wonderful recollections and your very poetic descriptions and welcome to the list. It doesn't matter when you join this community. You were with us in spirit from the beginning. It's amazing how universal Joni's songs are. Although I'm a little younger than that, there was a very similar culture going on here in Sydney at the time and Joni would have just as easily fit right in on Cronulla Beach as La Jolla Cove. I relate to the lifestyle but it's her universal messages and life lessons I relate to most. I also joined this list while at university, back in 1997 but don't worry about it being a distraction. We'll always be here and we bring up the same subjects again and again because someone always has a new spin on them. Get your work done and drop by to unload your mind from time to time. Speaks decent Spanish and some Catalan too. Still gorgeous looking last time I saw him. There was a Leonard Cohen tribute concert here last year and yesterday I bought the double CD and single DVD of the concert, mostly Spanish versions and Catalan versions of Cohen's songs but some are in English, including a track by JB (A Thousand Kisses Deep). For Cohen purists it may be a little strange to hear the songs in these two languages but most (not all) of the songs are very well done. The following Nyro albums are Japanese re-issues that have been released with bonus tracks. The following is a blurb posted to the Nyro list from a knowledgeable member: "Bonus tracks for NESTED album: (ME: (I'm pretty sure you need to buy the NEW Japanese release to get these tracks)) Emily & Nested [these are two separate songs connected by applause] These two tracks are from a live show [city unknown] in July of 1978. No further info on the box or in our records. They are previously unreleased performances. Bonus track for MOTHER'S SPIRITUAL album: Man In The Moon This track is from the same live show [city unknown] as above, July of 1978. Bonus tracks for SMILE album: Someone Loves You Get Me My Cap Coffee Morning These three tracks are from an undocumented demo session [location unknown] on December 12, 1974. Laura sang, played piano, and overdubbed all vocal harmonies. These are all previously unreleased songs and performances. Bonus tracks for WALK THE DOG album: Let It Be Me / The Christmas Song Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow He Was Too Good To Me These three tracks are from a 1989 studio demo, Laura solo and playing piano. In that session, she first sang demos of songs that would appear on WALK THE DOG, plus these three tunes. All three of these would end up rerecorded and orchestrated on her final (1995) session/album, which was released as ANGEL IN THE DARK. From their appearance in the demo, it's apparent Laura was considering these songs for WALK THE DOG, but saved them for a later session, as thematically they didn't quite fit with the all-original mood of WALK THE DOG." I'm especially looking forward to hearing the bonus songs on "Smile." Thanks for the heads-up Jerry, on the Nyro tribute. If you go, I'll look forward to hearing how it was. Okay! "What I give you since you asked...." is little compilations from my local paper (The Willimantic Chronicle, that does not have an on-line version (merde!) so, in a labor of love, I will type a few things. Thank you, Mom, for insisting I take "Personal Typing" in high school. It serves me well!) (Mama taught me the deeper meaning. Oh, how I miss her! She would be 80 on Friday.) 1. Today, the WC reported this: "Paul Newman's body has been cremated and a private funeral has been held, according to the CT Post. The newspaper quoted Newman's longtime friend and business partner, A.E. Hotchner. "It's all over," Hotchner told the newspaper.... Hotchner said he will miss his friend and "the great fun we had, the mischief. Everything we did was a lark." (I'm a little bit corny, comme d'habitude....."If I could put time in a bottle".....Paul put his salad dressing in wine bottles, the beginning of Newman's Own....and all the good that came from that!) 2. Monday, the WC had some pictures on the front page: one was of flowers and notes (on lilac sprays?) left on the stone wall at the entrance to the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp in Ashford. Bright as a neon light, I am remembering my little college hippie commune in ASHFORD, just a mile or so from the yet-to-be founded camp. And my first-born son was conceived in Ashford. I'm thinking I need to make a pilgrimage to Ashford as soon as time and good fortune allows. Lay down some flowers, and send up some prayers. Ashford is now holy ground for me. 3. Also from the WC: "Talking to TV reporters outside the family home in Westport, Conn, daughter Lissy Newman encourages people who wanted to pay tribute to simply show kindness to a friend, donate money to charity or vote in the elections." "Just look out for each other. That's really what he was all about," Lissy Newman said. "He was awesome to the end, and he is an awesome guy and his spirit with be with us forever and ever and ever." 4. In another publication (LOL...I read 'em all, just like Sarah Palin...whatever is put in front of me!) I saw this picture (that will break your heart): http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1042687/I-want-die-home-Paul-Ne wman-tells-family-hes-given-weeks-live.html 5. From http://www.newmansown.com/ : "Shameless Exploitation in Pursuit of the Common Good," was Paul's vision for Newman's Own and it is a philosophy we are proud to continue. What a great sig file! 6. You all know about his Playboy interview, right? When asked about why he doesn't lie and cheat? "When you've got steak at home, why go out for hamburger?" 7. I saw another picture (sorry, now I'm fading in a suburban room and too tired to google anymore) of friends at his garden gate...the gate me and my brazen h.s. friends drove through back in the 70's.... Okay, babies. That's all for now. I'll prolly wake up in the middle of the night and have more thoughts to share. (Dreams to share....) Love, Patti P. in CT P.S. I thought of the other thing that was so beautiful. Hold on. Let me go find it.... Yeah. Here is it is. One week last summer: " Just one week ago, too, according to the official obituary, Newman sat with his daughter in the arbor of the garden at his Westport home, breathed in all the late summer beauty and said very quietly, "It's been a privilege to be here." The privilege is all ours, though." http://www.westport-news.com/ci_10607837 P.S. Thanks so much for the video tribute, Mags. I put it on my Facebook page. Vive toujours l'esprit de Paul Newman! Agreeing with Jeannie - again!!! LOL! If any of you are truly experimental in your tastes in singer-songwriters, allow me to recommend the lead living figure of the Latin American Nueva Trova movement (new troubadour) : the Cuban Silvio Rodriguez. I have been a faithful admirer of his poetic lyrics, haunting or stirring melodies, and unique voice for decades. Google him - for a quick start try http://www.warr.org/rodriguez.html . Look to B&N or Amazon to buy. "Dias y Flores" is the CD I've worn out. But There's something truly memorable on every title he's issued - and they are numerous!!! Those who know Spanish will be knocked out by his imagery and sincerity, political and sensual wrapped together. His songs even make for fine reading! Hope some of you find a new "friend". A beautiful and extremely sad song but a commonplace scene in our child protective service foster care system here and everywhere. It touches me at so many levels. This song has actually yanked me to my knees with tears, especially the later orchestral version. Thank you, Bob. Joni spoke of her and dedicated CL to her when she played it on MuchMusicTV/Intimate & Interactive back in September of 1994. The story that Joni tells is pretty much the way it all happened. Mary was part Native American, hence the nickname. I'm assuming that Cherokee Louise is the same Louise as "Gail & Louise and their push-up brassieres", but I'm hoping that Sharon can shed some light on that.
